Be itknown that I, JOHN B. DEANE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in New York city, State of New York, ha\'e invented a new and useful Improvemen1i in Band-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is a noveleonstruction o1: band cutter fo1 eutting flat 01' wire bands employed in packing merchandise.

The objeot of my invention is to provide a band satter which Wlll. be cheap, simple and exceedingly durable in construction, and very easy and rapid in operation.

Another object of the invention is to provide a band cntte1 of such construction that it Will be impossible for the band 130 Work away fro1n the cutter during the cutting operation.

"With these objects in view, my invention consists of a handle bar terminating in a head, which head is eonstructed with a beak tapering toward the handle bar, said head and beak being bifurcated, and a cutting bar fulcrumed in the bifureated head, the long member of said bar projecting beyond the head while the short miamber works in the bifurcation in the head and beak, for the purpose of cutting the band, held between the head and beak.

The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all o1 which Will be fully described herein and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification:Fignre 1 is a view illustrating the practical application of my in vention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the head and connected parts, showing the initial osition in full lines and the cutting position in dotted lines, and Fig. 3 is a top lan view of the head and connected part-s.

In the practical embodiment of my invention, I employ a handle bar A, of Suitable dimensions, according t0 the nature 0f the work required of the device, whieh handle terminates in and expands with a head B, and upon the underside this head is provided with a beak 01 hook C, which tapers as shown toward the handle, and ends in a point o1 knife edge C. A V-shaped mouth 01 slot is thus provided between the head and beak, as it Will be noticed that the bottom of the beak and top of the head are substantially parallel. The end 0f th'e head is rounded as shown at B, t-he purpose of which Will appear later on.

The head and beak are n1ade eonsiderably wder than the handle A, and both the head and beak are bifurcated or slotted vertically as shown at D, the bifurcation extending inwardly as far as D, in the head, and at D in the beak. A cutting bar E rectangular in cross section is fulcrumed in the bifurcation of the head, a pivot pin F passing through the head and bar for this purpose. One end of this cutting bar E works snngly in the bifurcated head and beak, and it Will be noted that the member E which projects beyond the head, is considerably longer than the me1nber E, and is curved slightly.

I1; Will be understood that my improved construction of band cutter is primarily intended for cutting the flat 1netal bands Which con1e around bales of 1nerchandise and here tofore this eutting operation has been difiieult, tiresome, and has taken considerable ohne.

By means of my device the cutting operation is easily accomplished in a remarkably short space of time.

In operating my improved cutter, the head is placed upon the far s'1de of the band G, to be cut, beak downward, and drawn toward the operator, and in so doing the beak is drawn under the band, Whi0h band rides up the incline of the beak and becomes firmly seated in the slot, and as soon as the band has been picked up 011 the beak, the operator begins to raise the handle bar, and as the end of the head is rounded the said head Will readily turn or rock and as the outer end E 0f the cutter bar is bearing upon the bale, the cutting end E Will be forced into contact Wih the band G, as the head and beak turn, and all the power applied to the outer end of the lever cutting bar is transmitted 130 the short cutting arm, and in this way the power is greatly multiplied, owing to the arm E being longer than the arm E and the band Will be quickly and. easily severed, an entire piece, the Width of ehe cutting bar being haken completely out, and carried down through the bifurcation in ehe beak. The handle being preferably provided with a hand-grip H greatly facilitates the pulling and lif'ting operations. Having thus fully described my invention,
