JESSE THOMAS FERGUSON, OF HICKORY, MISSISSIPPI.
COMBINATION WIRE-STRETCI-IER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JnssE THOMAS FERGU- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hickory, in the county of Newton, State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Combination Wire-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for stretching purposes, especially for stretching wire-netting or barbed wire.
It has for its object to secure a powerful and effective pulling action; to reduce friction and facilitate the pulling operation; to expedite the action of the operative parts, and to simplify the application of the machine.
It consists of certain instrumentalities or features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of the same as applied more especially for stretching wire-netting. Fig. 2 is also a perspective View, showing the stretcher proper, disconnected from the other member comprising the stretcher in its entirety.
In practicing my invention, I provide what may be termed a support or guide member C preferably of approximately in verted U-shaped outline, with its arms terminated at their lower, otherwise free ends, into lateral right-angled extensions 0, having pendent vertical arms 0 Said arms 0 have apertures e therein through which eX- tends the tightening or stretching rope or cable is, which is suitably connected to the clamp between the jaws or members of which is held the wire-netting to be stretched.
A shaft or upright member B, preferably formed of a continuous or single piece of bar or plate metal looped about at its middle and doubled fiat upon itself, with the thus resulting branches or limbs suitably bolted together, is insertible vertically through a slotted opening 7' in the bridge or connecting portion of the U of the support C, and has a handle or cross bar A received by and held in the loop or eye formed therein asabove indicated, the latter being at the upper end of the member B as disclosed, for manually and readily actuating the same. The bar or plate formin portions of the shaft 01' member B are forked or diverged at their lower ends as at and in the bifurcation thus formed is received the cable or rope Specification of Letters Patent.

intermediate of its passage through the holes 6 of the arms of the support C, the rope or cable being subsequently wound upon the member B as the handle or lever A is actuated, as in performing the stretching operation. The slot-extension g of the hole or opening 7 allows of deflecting the shaft or member B diagonally so that said shaft may bear, just above the cable or rope wound thereon, against one angle, as at h, of the support C and be disposed at its opposite edge into said slot-extension, and thus provide for the effective retention of the shaft or member in place in the support 0, with its rope or cable under tension or stress, as against casual movement or turning from such tension or stress. It is also noted that the prongs m below the binding or retaining band 11. of the staff B are preferably narrowed toward their terminals to allow of suitably passing or inserting the shaft through the hole or opening 7, one of said prongs being directed through the slot-extension g, and thus allowing, by suitably manipulating the shaft, the requisite passing of the latter into proper position in the support C. Also by means of this arrangement the opening f may be relatively lessened in size than would otherwise be possible, and thus provide against undue lateral play or movement of the shaft or member B, as doubtless will be appreciated.
I claim A device of the character described, comprising a support of U-like outline, the upper cross member of which is provided with an opening having a lateral slot extension, the lower ends of the vertical arms of said support having lateral extensions, said extensions having vertical pendent members, said pendent members being provided with apertures for the reception of the object to be operated upon, a shaft received by the opening in said upper cross bar of said support, and adapted to be also received by the lateral slot extension, as in the retention of said shaft in effective position when under stress, the lower end of said shaft being adapted for engagement with the object to be acted upon, and means for actuating said shaft.
