PORTABLE WINDOW-BALCONY.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE HULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Airy, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable lVindowJSalconies, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to an improved type of portable scaffold, jack or balcony, for application to the window frame-work of buildings, to facilitate washing of sash, painting or repairs; and in such connection my present invention relates to the constructive arrangement of the portable appliance, for the defined purposes.

My invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1, is a view in section of a portion of a building showing the window framework thereof and a portable scafiold, ack or balcony, shown in side elevation of my invention and embodying essentially the main features of the same in application thereto. Fig. 2, is a top or plan View of the said port-able window scaffold or balcony. Fig. 3, is an underneath plan view of the portable appliance shown partly broken away and also showing the arrangement of swinging clamp-bar. Fig. 4:, is a perspective view of the ratchet or toothed casting arranged to fit into each side of the scafiold or balcony for engaging the swinging clamp-bar therewith; and Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the clamp-bar and one of the hooks of the same for engaging with the toothed cast- 111g.

Referring to the drawings, 10, is a building having a window-framework 11, an outside sill plate 12, an inside sill 13, and a bead or rail 14.

as to fit snugly into and over irregularities of the window frame-work 11, for example as illustrated in Fig. 1. The side runners a and 64 near the inner ends are cut-away or recessed to receive castings Z), consisting of a framing 6 with integrally formed ratchets or teeth 5 extending upward from the base and having slits 1), between the series of ratchets or teeth of the said casting, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4.

c, is a swinging clamp-bar, having arranged adjacent to both ends curved hooks 0 provided with buttons 0 for engaging between teeth of both castings 5 so as to permit the swinging clamp-bar c, to engage beneath the inside sill 13, of the windowframe 11, for holding the scaffold, jack or balcony in an operative safe position for use, so as to allow a person to sit or stand thereon, outside of the window-frame 11, to clean a sash or for any other purpose required. It will be seen that the arrangement of the swinging clamp-bar c, in connect-ion with the scaffold, jack or balcony 15, is such as to adapt the same to varying conditions withrespect to the structural arrangements of buildings in the application of such an appliance thereto.

Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A portable window balcony, comprising a sled-like structure having the base edges of the sides arranged in irregular outline, oblong slot-ted castings having teeth extending upward therein, said castings secured to the sides of said structure, and a transverse clamp-bar having at the respective ends curved hooks attached thereto for adjustably engaging between teeth of the castings of said structure, so as to permit of the positioning of said balcony, substantially as and for the purposes described.
