JOSEPH MAncI-IEK, oF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA. f
IRONA Specification ofLet'trsPatenp Application led March 6, 1909.
To all whom it may co'n tem:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Mnncnnu, a subject ofthe King of I'Iunvary, residing at Pittsburg, in the county et; Ulegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Iniprovements in Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being Ihad thereii te KLhe accompanying drawing. y y This inventiorrelates to sad irons, and f' the invention 'has for its o lject to provide novel means in connection with an iron for heating the same'independent of any other source than that carried by the iron. My invention aims to provide a sad iron 'with a detachable heater, wherein alcohol .or a simi-lar fluid is used as a heating medium. To this end, I have devised a hol-A low sad iron into which rejects 'a burner,
l 20 carried by a detachable ate having a re'sis to be understood that the detail construe? tion thereof can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. l
.In the drawings :-Figure 1 .is a side elevation of an iron constructed in accordance with my invention. artly broken'away and partly 1n' section, n same, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the iron,
rwith the detachable burner" partly broken 49 away, and Fi 4 1s a rear elevation of ythe iron with the urner detached.
In the aecompanying drawings,'1 have illustrated an iron casing comprisin -a base 1, inclined Walls 2 ,fa' top late 3 an a rear *4Ftwall 4, saidV inclined w'al s 'being of a less length than the basel, while the rear wall 4 is provided with side lugs 5 'extending to "the rear end of the base 1, saidrearwall- "being provided withan opening 6.' Secured to-fthe top late 3 is a, bow s ring 7 and soldered or otllxerwise connecte to vsaid s ring 'is another s rin 8 supporting a han le 9. The-` incline wa ls 2 are provldcd with air s 10, whereby air can be admitted to the interior of thel iron to insure a proper combustion therein.V Y
ug. 2 is 'a plan of the `I'l touted Oct. 26, 1.909. serial No. 481,651.2
The rear Wall -1 rfisti'p'ovided with two screws or headed pins` 11 und detachably mounted upon said pins is a plate o adapted to rest between the lugs 5 ot' the rear wall 4". 60 'lfhe lower end of the plate S supports a longitudinal burner casing 12 having perforations 13, an ignition opening 14, a nip- Ele 15 and a plug 16 for the rear end of said urner casing, said plug being detachable whereby theinterior of the casing can be'Y cleansed.1 The plate 8 directly above the burner casing 1 2 is provided with an inlet pipe 17 communicating with the burner casing 12 through the medium of registering 70 openings 18 formed in said pipe and said casing adjacent to the nipple .15. The forward end of the pipe 17 is plugged by a screw or nlug 19, while the outer 'end thereof is bent upwardly and supports a reservoir 20 adapted to contain alcohol or a similar inflammable fluid. The reservoir 20 is filled through the medium of a detachable cap 21 carried by the top of said reservoir.
Secured to the innerside of the plate 8 80 and communicating with the pipe 17 is a vertical tube 22, saidtube extending above the top plate 3 of the iron, and said top plate is cut away as at 23 to provide clearance for .the tube'. The upper end of the 85 tube 22 is closed and in said tube is a Vertical transverse partition 24, said partition. extending downwardly into the opening 18 of the pipe 17 and the burner casing 12.
In operation, the alcohol or inflammable iiuid contained within the reservoir 20 Hows through the pipe 17 into the tube 22 and over-`A the upper end of the partition 24, the fluid passin downwardly again through the inner end o the pipe 17, through the openings 18, into the casing 12, thefluid then passing through 'the mpple 15 where the uid is ignited and the ame projected forwardly into the burner casing. 12 to thoroughly heat the plate 1 and the inclined wa ls 2 adjacentto said plate. By inserting a lighted match into the air openlngs 10 adjacent to the .ignition opening 14, the alcohol ejected'by the nipple15 can be easil ignited. After the reservoir 20 is illed w ereby the alcohol fiows' over the top `of the partition 24 and the tribe 22, and is ignited, a siphonie action is established Which'causes the alcohol to be continuously fed to the burner casing 12' until the contents of the reservoir 20 have' been exhausted. By removing the plate 8 and the parts carried thereby,
ioo
the interior of the iron can be easily cleaned. Since the burner casing 12 protects the end of the nipple 15, it is impossible for a flash back. to take place that would. ignite the contents of the reservoir 20 and cause the sanne to be destroyed.
' carried by Said top plate, said 'inclined walls having air openings formed therein, a plate detachably mounted upon the rear wall, a burner casirg arranged in said plate and adapted to protrude into said easing,A .said casing having perforations formed {hei-ehi, a nipple located in said casinfb` in advance of said peiforations, a pipe arranged in said rear plate and communica ting with said casing, areservor carried by said pipe, a tube carried by said rear plate and cmnn'lnnicat` ing with saidpipe, a vertical partition aranged in said tube; projecting` through said Pipe and extenditi finto said casing in a lplane in advance ofthe plate of the nipple, and plugs carried by said casing and said' .i f pipe to permit ofeas'y access being had to the interior of said casing,r and said pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a sad iron, the combination With an iron casing, having air openings formed therein, a handle carried by 'said casing, a plate detachably connected to the' rear end of said casing, a burner easing carried by said plate and extending into the first inentioned casing and provided With 3a plurality of periiorations, a pipe carried by said plate, said pipe and said burner easing each'pro- `vided with an opening', said openings registering with each other, a nipple arrangedin a boiler casingl and rearwardly of said opening, a reservoir earriedby` said pipe, a tube carried by 'said plate and con'nnnnicating with said pipe, and a partition arranged'in said tube -=.nd extendingA tl'n'ough sai-d pipe and into Lneopeningl of said burner casing,
snbstantially as described.
In testimony ywhereof l al'lix iny signature in the presence of twoyvitncsses.
JOSEPH vl\l/\l l(llflllK, VViftne:ases:l l 'l A. ILRBSAG, y MAX H. Snonovi'lz.
