LEONARD C. LYZOTTE, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
PIE-PLATE LIFTER 0R HOLDER.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application iled December 29, 1908. Serial N0. 469,829.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD C. LYZOTTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pie-Plate Lifters or Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device designed j for use in kitchens, bakeries and the like, whereby the housewife, cook or baker, can easily and conveniently remove pies, cakes, etc., from an oven without danger of burning the hands.
The invent-ion has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character so as to be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efcient in use, and conveniently manipulated.
Another obj ect of the invention is the provision of a plate holder so designed as to embrace the rim of the plate at opposite points and at the same time engage under the plate to firmly support the latter in removal from an oven to a table or any suitable place.
With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying` drawings, which illustrate one embodiment thereof, Figure l is a perspective view of the device showing the gripping jaws or arms in open position. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring' to the drawing, l designates the handle of the device which is preferably a strip of metal of suitable stiffness and formed at its inner extremity with a tongue 2 adapted to engage under and extend diametrically across the bottom of the plate or pan to be removed, the said tongue being offset below the plane of the handle l and integrally connected therewith by a connecting portion 3 which forms a shoulder against which the edge or rim of the plate strikes in positioning the device in gripping relation to the plate.
l is formed into a tooth 4L whereby the device can be hung on a peg or other support.
The device is provided with a pair of arcuate gripping jaws or arms 5 carried by shanks 6 which are preferably a single piece of wire having a coiled spring portion 7 that j connects the outer ends of the shank tog gether. The shanks are normally sprung outwardly in divergent relation and on the shanks is a sliding ring or sleeve 8 which, upon movement inwardly, draws the shanks 6 together so as to close the jaws 5 around the plate to be lifted. The jaws are pivotally connected with the handle l by a staple 9 fastened to the handle and passing through the coiled portion 7, the staple constituting a pivotal connection between the jaw section of the device and the handle. The jaws 5 constitute portions of the wire forming the shanks 6, and each jaw consists of arcuate bar members l0 and ll having their outer ends united by a vertical connecting member l2, and the inner end of the member l1 is formed into a vertical portion 13 that is looped at lt over the bar members l0 where they connect with the shanks 6.
In practice, the device is applied to a plate by lirst allowing the gripping aws to spring open by moving the sleeve or ring 8 outwardly toward the coiled portion 7, and then the tongue 2 is inserted under the plate to be removed until the rim of the latter strikes the shoulder or abutment 3. The jaws 5 are then brought into engagement with the plate at diametrically opposite points and the shanks 6 sprung together by sliding the sleeve or ring 8 inwardly toward the jaws. The device is thus locked to the plate so that the latter can be removed without danger of dropping.
It is observed that the slide 8 engages both the shanks 6 of the aws and the hand member thereby drawing the jaws together and holding the same to the handle member. It is also observed that the slide draws the jaws inward toward the lhandle member equally so that the pan or pie plate is gripped with equal force.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is A pan lifter comprising a strip of metal providing a handle member, a pan engaging tongue and a stop, a spring wire doubled upon itself and having a spring coil at the The outer end of the handle l fold, and having the end portions forming 2 93ans@ the straight shanks and jaws, each aw commember and serving to draw the Shanks toprising spaced members and terminal congether and hold them to the handle member.
