Description

M. J. HARVEY;
- CORN. HUSKING MACHINE. PPLIoATmmnLnmum. 23, 1909 Patented Oct. 26; 1909.
MICHAEL J. HARVEY, OF SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA.
CORN-HUSKING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
' a citizen of the United States, residing at corn huskin devices, and
Shreveport, in the parish of .Caddo and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-- Husking Machines; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in is designed to provide a simp e and cheap, but a durable and efi'ectivemaehine and one, which by ordinary manipulation, will do quicker work than devices now generallyin use.
While the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still for the purpose of disclosure reference is had to the accompanying drawings, and the particular features of novelty Wlll be more succinctl pointed out in the claims.
Re erring to the drawings, in which like letters designate the same parts in the several views-Figure 1 is a perspective view.
of the corn husking device; and Fig. 2 is a v transverse section through same.
In the broad application of the invention there is provided an elongated support terminating at one end in a ring disposed in the same plane as the support, a pivoted knife being so associated with the support and annulus as to be operable across the opening in same, but. in the drawings I have shown a preferred constructioirformed from-metallic strips bent to the desired contour.
The main body portion of the support is formed from a blank strip bent to provide a base flange 1, a rearward leg 2, thence extending forwardly to form the horizontal arm 3 bent back upon itself in theform of annulus 4, thence extending rear- 5 in the sleeve or of the a strap or wardly and terminating at socket member disposed above the top rear leg 2. v
6 designates a ring securely held within the strap or annulus 4, the ring and annu-- lus being disposed in the same longitudinal lane as the support proper.
At the forward end of the machine there is provided a bent metal leg consisting of the flange base 7, the' upright forward leg 8 bent rearwardly toform the curved portion 9 fitting snugly the exterior of the annular member 4.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed March 23, 1909. Serial No. 485,220.
Lying adjacent the main support proper is a guiding member consisting of the horizontal arm 10 extending forwardly and provided with the vertical arm 11 having a -ase flange 12, and at its upper end terminating in a bent over.portion forming a housing 13 having a flange 1& adapted to rest above the curved portion 9 of the forward leg, the flange 14 and the curved ortion 9 being suitably secured to the annu ar portion 4: by bolts 14:, or otherwise.
Intermediate of the horizontal arm 10 and the vertical arm 11 is the integral semi-cylindrical portion 15 registering with the annular opening in the ring 6.
The whole guiding member consisting of the parts 10, 15 and 11, is spaced from the main support proper, and within the space is operated a knife 16 provided with a pivot pin 17 passing through the sleeve or socket 5.
'19 simply designatesa pin or stop to limit the downward movement of the knife.
It will be understood that the support is securely affixed to "any suitable base by means of screws or bolts assing through apertures 20 formed in the auges 1., 7 and 12 of the machine.
It will be obvious that in operation, the ear of corn to be husked may be held in either the right or the left hand, depending upon whether the operator is right or left handed, and the butt of the rear placed within the annular ring when the knife is in its elevated position. Upon a downstroke of the knife the butt of the ear is severed as the knife cuts through, when the husked ear will drop out and the husks may be thrown to one side.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim is l.-A corn husking device consisting of a body member formed from a metal strip bent upon itself to form an annular opening at its forward end and supporting leg at its rear end; a forward leg secured to the annular portion of said body member; a guiding member consisting of a horiiontal strip terminatingin a vertical member provided with what a bent over portion at its upper end secured therefor formed from a metal strip bent to base andbentat its upper end fiofit said I annular strap; a 'g'uiding member spaced from said support, consisting of a horizontal 1 arm, a Vertical arm terminating in a bent 10 over housing at its upper end having a lateral flange, and an integral intermediate semi-cylindrical-section registering with the lower portion of said annular member; se-
curing means between said housing, forward leg and annular strap; 'a knife operating 15 between said spaced members, across the opening in said annular member; and a pivot pin passing thropgh said horizontal arm,
said knife and said socket, substantially as described. 20
Intestimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses. MICHAEL J. HARVEY.
