HORACE WYMAN, F WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 CROMPTN & KNOWLES LOOM WORKS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
W'EFT-REPLENISHING- LOOM.
" To all whom @may concern:
l citizen of the United threaded into the shuttle or compartments, and
gravity to the lower discharging end of the -.Yhagazine, as the lowest bobbin in any one Be it known that I, HORACE WYMAN, a States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weft- Replenishing Looms, of which the following :is a specification. invention relates to weft replenlshmg My looms, and to that class-which have a ma 'azne carryingsuperposed bobbins of illing carriers, preferably arranged in series, in one'or more vertically extending guide-ways dropping down by of the compartments is removed by the transferrer mechanism; and my invention articularly relates to means for holding the oose ends of the filling drawn off from the bobbins in the magazine, and to means for guiding the filling, ferred from the magazine into the shuttle, to cause it to be threaded into said shuttle, as
the lay moves backward, and the shuttle isl being thrown across the lay.
. In weft replenishing mechanism of looms of the class referred to, the loose ends of the filling from aseries of bobbins in the magazine, are led to 'a point, at such a distance from the lower bobbin in the series, as to ermit of the filling on the bobbin trans- 'erred being threaded into the shuttle. a
As the series of bobbins is replenished from time to time, by placing new bobbins in the magazine, and the bobbins drop down in the magazine by gravity, it is found that the ends of the filling from the bobbins in the upper part ofthe magazine, when they reach the position of the lowest bobbins, be-
come so slack that the filling often fails to be transferred.
In my improvements, I preferably bring all the loose ends of the filling from\ the series of bobbins, to a fixed device, to which they are attached, and said device is at such n a distance from the bobbins as to hold and retain the lfilling from the lowest bobbin in the magazine, in a'taut, or a substantially taut condition, when it is bein transferred from the magazine into the s uttle. The fixed device referred to, relative to the bobbins in the magazine, is such, that 'the iiliin'g Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationled April 10, 1907. Serial N o. 367,436.
on the bobbin transwh'en the bobbin is K type referred to, "\or filling carriers Patented oet. 26, 1909.
between the bobbins and the fixed device, when the bobbins are near* the t'op of the ma azine, will be' substantially taut, and wilbecome loose when midway in the magazine as the bobbins descend therein by gravity, and will again become taut, or substantially taut, when the bobbins are near the bottom of the magazine, and when the lowest vbobbin is transferred from the magazine into the shuttle.
When a bobbin is transferred from the magazine into the shuttle, the end ofthe filling extends upwardly to its point of attachment, and the filling passes above the eye of the shuttle, and in order to thread the filling into the eye of the shuttle, which takesplace when the shuttle is being thrown across the lay from the magazine end thereof, I provide a guide for the filling, near the magazine, and slightly above the shuttle, and extending rearwardly. The filling passes under the guide, as the lay moves backward, and is moved or diverted from va vertically inclined direction, to a horizontal direction, to be threaded into the e`ye of the shuttle, as the shuttle is being thrown across the lay. y
By my improvements I am enabled to hold practically tautthe loose end of filling from a filling carrier, as the filling carrier transferred from the magazine into is being the shuttle, and to guide the filling and cause it to be threaded into the shuttle, as the shuttle is being thrown across the la'y from the mag` zine end.
I have shown in the drawing a detached portion of a stationary magazine for weft replenishing looms of the type shown and described in U. S. applicationv for Letters Patent, Serial N o. 298,939, with ments ,combined therewith, sufficient to enabler those skilled in the art to understand the construction andl operation thereof.
Referring to the drawings :-Figure l is a 'front view with one series of bobbins therein, and my improvements combined therewith, and also shows one end of the lay, and al shuttle thereon partially broken away, with a bobbin in said shuttle, and also shows the upper' end of the picker stick. lscribed in said a plication for Letters Patf beam, shuttle box, and shuttle are shown in I section in this figure. Fig. l corresponds to Fig. l, but/shows the picker sticknnd the shuttle moved inwardly, and the filling, threaded into the shuttle by the guide. vFig. ll is an end view of the magazine shown in .saine h nrtz the lay beam, shuttle box, and shuttle are shown in section in this ligure.
ln the art-onipanylng drawings, l llsthe the picker stiel; carrying the picker 23, jl is on, of any ordinary rtnistrnction.
rThe stationary 'magazine for the filled bobbins is in this instant-e similar to the magazine shown and described in` application,'b`eriall No. 296,039, above referred to. The stationary magazine or hopper consists in this instance of a vertically extending plate5,ha\-ing in this instance two vertinjients for the headset the bobbins 6, which are snne'rposled on each other and drop down 1n thevgnidc-waysby' gravity, and two septically extending guide-way or compartment for the tips of the bobbins. There is in this instance a vertically extending opening- 5" between the (two plates 5 and 5 through which 'preferably Apass the filling ends 6 from the bobbins 6. The plates 5' and 5 are'secured togctherin this instance by the transverse rods 1'( At the lower end of each guide-way or compartment for the bobbinsv 6 is in this instance located a rocking lever or cradle 8 to hold the bobbins 6 in their respective guide-way or compartment, and o n the rocking ofthe lever or cradle 8, the lowest bobbin in the guide-way or compartment'is allowed to drop down by gravity to the discharging end of' the magazine, and to be transferred into a shuttle, to
The lever or cradle 8 has a motion communicated to 1t at the proper time, to rock said down to the dischar ing end of the niagazine. Said 'rocking lgever or cradle 8 has a crank pin 8,Which is connected 'to the lower end ofa vertically extending rod 9, mounted A sprin 11 encireles the rod 9 and acts to return sai rod to its normal position, and with it the lever or cradle 8. The rod 9 is connected,
with the' drop shuttle boxesv at the other'end ofthe loom, not shown, all as fully-deent Serial No. 2 8,939. u y
17' will now describe my improvements which 1n this instance are shown combined riers'orleobbins, of tie class referredfto,
but which may be combined with any other v Aplates 5', and 5.
rlhe filling attaching end 12llv of the armv 12 is so located above the lower bobbins of the magazine, that the distance between theupper bobbins and the attaching end 12" of their fillings, and the distance between the attaching end 12 and the bobbin transferred into the shuttle, is such, that the filling from the bobbin transferred into the shuttle, when suitably guided, will be sufficiently taut to be threaded into the shuttle as the shuttle is thrown across the lay. The attaching end 12 for the filling end is also preferably located at the rear of the vertical central `portion of the magazine, as shown in F ig. 2.
The guiding device for the filling on the bobbin transferred into the shuttle, to thread -the filling into the shuttle, is in this instance made separate from the magazine, and. consists of a plate or support 1st, having in this instance hub 1t', secured in this instance by 'a set screw 15 on one of the transverse rods i. The plate 14 'hasin this instance attached to its forward end, the
wardly with its other end 16 preferably bent inwardly and extending over the upper edge of the plate lil, but not. attached therehas in this instance a hub 12 extension 12, around which to, so as to allow the wire to move upwardly and form a yielding surface. l
-The wire 16 is located in the path of the filling from the bobbin which is transferred into 4the shuttle from the maga-zine, as the lily moves backward, and acts, as the filling engages said wire, to "move downwardly the filling, intermediate its attached enden the holding device 12,'and the threadingdevice 'on the shuttle, to cause the filling to be aided and threaded into the shuttleas the ay moves backward, and the shuttle is being,
thrown across the lay.
' The attaching end 12 of the arm l'for the filling ends, referably extendsv above and in. vertical a inement with the uidel'wire 16,' and the distance from .the en v12 'to the rear part of the guitrle-wlrel 1d less than the distance from the end. 12 'tothe j front endof the guide-Wire, so that thetension on the filling on the bobbin, asthe lay moves backward, after the bobbin has beenA Atransferred into the shuttle, is reduced as the lay movesbackward and the filling is threaded into the shuttle.
It will be understood that in using my improvements, the device to which the loose ends of the fillings are attached, is in a sta-- tionary position above the lower bobbin of the sets of bobbins, and the filling from the it@ bobbin, at the time the bobbin is transferred, extends in an upwardly inclined direction, directly from the tip of the bobbin to the stationary device, as shown in' the drawings, and as the lay moves backward pre 315 paratory to the picking of the shuttle across the lay, the filling passes under the guide 16, and as the shuttle is thrown across the lay, theposition of the filling is changed from an inclined position by its engagement 2G with the guide 16, to a horizontal'positio'n, and is thus caused .to be threaded into the shuttle. l
, It will be understood that the detailsof construction of my improvements may be varied if desired, and they may be adapted to be applied to weft replenishing looms having magazines of different construction, as for instance the magazine shown and described in U. S. Letters Patent, No. 626,201. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
