' Specification of Letters Patent.

Appnoatio'n mea Maren 31,1909.. seainmliasess.
To all whom fitV concern:
l Be' it known that I, J SIMPSoN, citizen of the l'United States, residing at .Kootenai,' in the county of. Bonner and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in Shakers for Grates, of which the following is a specification,
' This-invention relates to meansfor shakl ing grates, and 'isparticularly adapted; and intended for-the purpose of Vshakingthe grates of locomotives, although it is capable Aof application 'to traction engines and the `The object of thev invention is to provide means whereby the grate will be shaken'by the aid of the engine, the gra-te being connected to a Agearing which mayl beoperated by the axle of the engine for the intended pur "ose,
the operation'being under the control o the fireman. -f
The inventionY is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a side elevation thereof, the
grate and axle being shown in vertical sec- V25 tion. Fig., 2 is a detail.in plan of the oper` ating devicesfor shaking the grate. Fig. 3
i is an end elevation ofthe device shown in Fig. 2. Figsfl, 5, 6 and 'Z are details in erspective of various parts of the operating evices.'
' Referring s'peciiicall to the drawings, A
indicates the axle of .a ocomotive or the like,
` and G the grate bars thereof, which may be of an ordinar rocki or shaldn t e.
Moimted inthe .fraiii -F ofthe egngyie, under the grate is asuppor't 1 forming av guide or'way or a'slide 2.
5 is a sliding boxing or carrier which is mounted upon the support l'which may be shifted len hwise thereon by? means of a lever 7 which' will extend up through the A with the axle A or with fa friction ring a placed thereon .for the purpose. The sl1de 2 is connected by a rod 6 to a lever.6",`whic h may be the-usual lever used for the purpose of shaking the grate, Said lever being-con slide and .the grate.
nected to the reciprocating b ar g which is attached tothe grate bars for the .purpose of rocking the same.
In operation, when the lever is. set at the middle point, both the wheels 3 and 4`will be out of contact with the axle, and the gear the wheels one way or the other, so that one will contact with the axle, which will drive the slide 2 back and forth and by the conwill be idle. To Shake the grate, the lever is thrown one way orl the other, which shifts nections shown will ,rock the grate Oneway or the other. By usingtwo wheels the grate can be reversed 'or'tilted either way while itis being Shaken, so that in case it chokes with cinders, they can be' vbroken up yand dislodged by shifting from' onewheel to the other. Obviously, however, the device capable of use with only one wheel.v
The' devices will. occupy but little space at the side ofthe bed of the locomotive under the grate, and will not `interfere with thev werking. of the engine.
Various modifications may be made within thescope of the invention, which is not lim. itedv to the details Shown.
1. The combination with a vlocomotive axle and shaking .grate of a support extending-across underthe axle, a slide mounted on the support andoperatively connectedV to the grate, a movable-carrier mounted on the support, a wheel `on the' carrier, and ar-.
ranged to vbe moved Into or out of'contact.
with the axle, a pitman connecting the Wheel and the'slide, and means to shift thecarrier. 2. The combination 'With a 'locomotive axle and shaking grate, of a support extending across under the axle, a slide mounted on thesupport, a carrier mountedN on the support, va pair of friction wheels mounted in bearings on the carrier and located on "opposite sides lof the axle, oppositely extending pitmen connecting the wheels 'and the slide,- means to shift the carrier to throw either wheel in engagementy with the axle,
andan operative connection between the vIn'testimony whereof,Ifallix my signature in presence of, twowitnesses.'
WILLIAM J. SIMPSON.
