WALTER W. MCCASKIE, OF HIBBING, MIKINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TOBYRON K.
` DUTTON, OF HIBBING, MINNESOTA.
STOKER.
To all whom it mag/ concern.'
Be it known that I, VALTER 7. Mc- CAsitiE, a citizen of-the United States of America, and resident of Hibbing, in the count)7 of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stokers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stokers and particularly to means for insuring proper delivery of fuel or coal to the said stoker.
In stokers having hoppers containing coal which is delivered from the hopper to the stoker, the coal often becomes banked or so packed in the hopper as to remain therein, notwithstanding the Stoker feeding mechanism is in operation. In other words, the said coal becomes arched so that there is a space under the mass of coal in which the stoker feeding mechanism is operating without coming in contact with the coal, hence the furnace is imperfectly supplied with fuel.
means for dislodging coal and for agitating it in the hopper so that it will not become banked in the manner stated, and it is furthermore the purpose by the mechanism to insure uniformity of feed while the stoker feeding mechanism is in operation.
Vith the foregoing` and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter moie fully set forth and claimed. y
Indescribing theV invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote correspending parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of the feeding and agitating mechanism embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 illustrates a top plan riew thereof; Fig. 3 illustrates an end view of the -I mechanism with the hoppers shown in dotted lines;
Fig. 1 illustrates a sectionalview of a shaftQ with the blade applied thereto; and l Fig. 5 illustrates a sectional view of said shaft having another forml of `blade attached thereto.
In these drawings 10 denotes the hopper Specification of Letters Patent.
It is an object of this invention to provide Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
Application filed June 2, 1919. Serial No. 301,244.,
or, bin to which the coal is supplied for delivery by the 's toker mechanism which A shaft '12 is rotatably mounted in known y manner with respect to the bin or hopper and the said shaft is supplied with a plurality of coal agitatingvblades 13 secured to the shaft 12 by vclips 111 and the said shafts are further suppliedwith blades 15 and 1G forming extensions of a clip member, which clip member partially embraces the shaft 12 and is held in place by a clip member 1.8 which partially embraces the shaft and is secured to the clip member 17 by fastemngs 19, such as bolts. y
As the shaft 18 partially rotates, the blades 13, 15 and v1G oscillate and are intended to dislodge coal and cause it. to be delivered to the stoker 11, the said shaft or pitman 21 reciprocates and oscillates the arm 2O so that the blades 13,15 and 16 oscillate in an arc of a circle.
Near each end of the shaft 12 a blade 13 has apivot 28 to which an arm-29 of a scraper 30 is connected and the said scraper is intended to move up and down the wall of the hopper near the corner to prevent the packing and lodo'ment of coal at the corners as those are the points where it is more apt to lodge.v The form of the Scrapers is lwell shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawing,
and the said Scrapers are guided by U-bolts 31 extending through the wall of the hopper `and secured in place by fastenings such as nuts 32.
From an inspection of the drawing and from the foregoing description, it will be apparent that as the stoker operates to feed coal, coal is delivered to the Stoker or is agitated so as to gravitate to the stoker by reason of the mechanism heretofore described,` which mechanism is operated simultaneously With the stoker so that so long as coal remains in the hopper or bin, it will be caused to gravitate to the stoker.
I claim- 1. In a coal feedinff mechanism, a hopper for delivering coal to a stoker, a shaft, means for operating the shaft, a coal agitating means comprising a shaft, blades mounted on the -said shaft, pivots carried by certain of said blades, scraper arms mounted on the pivots, Scrapers carried by the arms, means actuated by the stok'er opelating mechanism for partially rotating the shaft in opposite directions alternately, and means for Guiding the scraper arms.
2. In a coal feeding mechanism, a hopper for delivering coal to a Stoker, a shaft, means for operating the shaft, coal ap'itating means comprising a shaft, blades mount' WALTER W. MCCASKIE.
