Application led January 11, 1909. Serial No. 471,728.
ATo all whom 'it may concern: JAMES BURD, a citizen Be it known that I, of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat-Adjusting Mechanism for Agricultural Machines; and I do declare the'following to be a full, clear, and
will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to mechanism for adjusting the seats of agricultural machinery.
The object of the invention is to overcome certain difficulties inherent in machines of this type, one of which is the unevenness of the operators seat during travel over rough and hilly country, particularly the latter. The position of the operators seat is rather important as much better work can be accomplished when sitting in the proper or vertical position. This is impossible with most machines of this character, and when working on hillsides it is particuf larly necessary for the operator to remain in uncomfortable positions for a considerable period, for instance, in going along one stretch of hill the right hand side of the machine may be tilted downwardly and the operator would be thrown in an uncomfortable position until he made the turn, at which time the tilt of the machine would be reversed and he would be thrown in as equally an uncomfortable position in the opposite direction.
My invention is designed to obviate these difficulties, and particularly speaking, consists in means for supporting the seat upon a part of the machine (preferably the tongue, as is usual), so that it may be adjusted laterally and maintained in a vertical position at all times.
A further obj ect is the provision of means for adjusting the seat longitudinally of the machine, or forwardly and upwardly so that the operator may place himself in closer or more operative relation with the levers of the machine.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a rear elevation, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the of the invention, suoli as' machine on an inclined surface and the seat arranged in horizontal position, Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4'is an enlarged top plan partly in section, Fig. 5 is a vertical, longitudinal .section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a vertical, transverse section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the seat attaching plate.
Referring more especially to the drawing,
y1 represents the frame of the machine, 2 the supporting wheels and 3 the draft tongue. This type of machine has been shown for the purpose of illustrating the adaptation of my improved mechanism and in no way forms any part of the invention, except only as it supports the seat.
Secured to the tongue, preferably at its rear end, is a mounting plate 4 slotted at 5 longitudinally and provided at either end of.
the slot with guiding lugs 6 which are adapted to engage the slot 7 formed on the underneath side of the bracket 8. This bracket 8 is provided with bracing struts 9 and both are connected to the front plate of the inner frame 1.1 of the drum 12. This inner frame is formed of plates 13 and 14 which are held in separated relation by bolts 15 which pass through the plates and through spacing sleeves 16 arranged between the plates. Adjacent the periphery of the plates 13 and 14, I provide rims 17 and 18, the former of which is secured to the plate 13 between the plates 13 and 14, and the latter Yof which is secured to the rear of the plate. 13 and is arranged between said plate and the back of the drum. This inner frame is held in position in the drum by means of an overhanging flange 20 which is secured to the. back plate, 19 by a semi-circular connecting flange 21. Passing through the core and the back 19 of the drum is a shaft 22 which is threaded on one end to receive the locking nut or block`23, and is provided with a sleeve 24 arranged between the plates 13 and 14 and a similar sleeve arranged between the plate 14 and the back19 of the drum. The rear end of the shaft is headed and has journaled thereon an operating lever 25 which is connected to the back of the drum by a bolt 26. The forward side of this lever is provided with a spring pressed pawl 27 controlled by a hand lever 28 and adapted to enter an aperture 29 in the rim 21 of the drum 12. This pawl after passing through the aperture 29 engages between theteeth 30 formed uponv the outer edge of the inner frame so 4as to' hold the drum in adjusted position With relation'to said frame. The drivers or operators seat 3l is mounted upon the top side of the drum l2 and may be of any suitable construction.
As the bracket With its attached inner frame l1 is stationary With respect to the machine, it Will be seen that when the paWl is in engagement With one of the teeth the seat will be thrown from its horizontal position when the machine is traveling along the hillside. By adjusting the drumkthrough the manipulation of the lever and its springV pressed pavvl the seat may be easily maintained in horizontal position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying draW- ings, the construction and operation of the invention Will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention Y In combination With a support, of a bracket adjustably secured thereto, an inner frame comprising a frontv plate and a ratchet plate and means to secure the plates together in spaced relation, a. shaft passing through the inner frame, a drum mounted on the shaft and having a flange overhanging the inner frame to hold the drum on the frame, a seat on the drum, and a lever piv- Y oted to the shaft and carried on the drum Y nesses. Y
Y JAMES BURD.
