SEPARABLE STEREOTYPE PLATE .AND BASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1909.
Application filed. August 16, 1909. Serial No. 513,068.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUST F. Hnnnsnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Stereotype Plates and Bases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to separable .stereotype plates and bases of the character of those used in newspaper work for sc-called patent insides, in which the plates which contain the printing face are changed from time to time as the eXigencies of the case may require, the bases however being used repeatedly, new plates being continuously substituted upon the same bases. These plates and bases have interlocking joints, and it is essential that the joints upon the plates shall at all times be interchangeable upon the bases, as the plates are made from time to time and the bases remain the same.
I have provided a stereotype plate and base having new and improved connecting means of the character mentioned between the same.
It is the object of my invention, further, to provide a separable stereotype plate and base so connected that the rollers which supply the ink to the printing surface and which have a great deal of suction, shall not draw or pull the plates from the bases, in spite of inequalities incident to manufacture.
It is a further object of my invention to so construct and arrange the connecting means between the plates and bases that the l plates may be made exceptionally light, as
the plates are usually distributed from a central point of manufacture to diii'erent points of use which are widely separated, shipment of the same being necessary by the fastest routes which as a matter of practice charge the highest rates for transportation.
By means of my improved device I am enabled to meet all the requirements stated.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description and claims,
' and from the drawing, in which latter:
j Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a plate and base in connected relation, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same in separated relation. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section of my improved device in connected relation and, Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section of a pair of plates placed together back to back and reversed longitudinally.
Ihave illustrated my invention as applied to bases and plates of single-column newspaper width.
1 represents the base which is provided with a plurality ot' longitudinal grooves 2 which are undercut as shown at 3 for causing the undercut walls of said grooves to recede downwardly and under the top face 4 of the base at an. angle thereto, the said angles being shown parallel. These grooves are located between the sides of the base for providing supporting faces 5 (5 for the plate 7 between said vplurality of grooves and said sides and a supporting face 8 for said plate between said grooves. The base is also provided at the upper edge ofl its right-hand side with a longitudinal rabbet 9, the side wall 10 of which preferably recedes downwardly and outwardly from the face 4 of the base at a slight angle in a direction which is opposite to the direction in which the undercut walls of the grooves extend. The plate 7 has the printing face, represented at 11, thereon. This plate is provided with a plurality of tongues 12 which are undercut as shown by the angular walls 13, the angles of which correspond to the angles 'of the undercut walls of the grooves in the base. The plate is also provided at its right-hand side edge with a longitudinally extending depending flange 14, the inner wall of which preferably slopes downwardly and outwardly at a slight angle in opposite direction to the direction of the angles of the undercut walls of the tongues of the plate. The rabbet 8 is of greater cross-sectional width than the width of the flange 14, so that, when the plate and base are assembled, the'tongues on the plate may be received well under the overhanglng walls of the grooves in the base while pro-v viding a slight space 15 between the adjacent walls of the rabbet and iange, so as to permit safe joints between said tongues and grooves in spite of inequalities that may arise in manufacture.
The depending flange and the rabbet permit me to make the plate exceptionally thin while providing a side wall of substantial depth at the side edge of the plate against which the column-rule 16 is received, it being understood that the upper edges of the sidewalls of the columnrule are tapered, as
shown at 17, the flange 14 however depend-- ing substantially under the level of the tapered portion and under the level of' the bottom of the plate. rlhe column-rule forces the plate sidewardly upon its base for causing approach between t-he angular mating undercut walls of the tongues and grooves, the space between the adjacent walls of the flange and rabbet permitting substantially close connection between said undercut walls of said tongues and grooves irrespective of inequalities in the manufacture of, the same. In this manner I provide three points of contact for holding the plate upon the base, namely, the tongues which are intermediate of the side edges of the plate and the depending flange which is at one edge of the plate. This permits me to make the web 1S of the plate eXtreme-ly thin and to provide a plate exceptionally light in weight, while providing a construction which insures firm union between the plate and the base ttor preventing the plate being lifted from the base by the suction of the inlriiig rollers. The plate is also preferably provided with ribs 19 which form the resting points of the plate upon the supporting surfaces 5 G S of the base. I also provide the tongues and flanges of the plates in such positions relatively to each other, that the plates may be reversed longitudinally and placed back to back in pairs for shipping purposes, and when so placed the said tongues and flanges will be in uninating relation and have substantial space laterally between each other, so that the plates may occupy little space and to prevent injury or breakage of the tongues and flanges in course of shipment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is :A
l. In combination, a separable stereotype plate and base, the said base being provided lwith a plurality of longitudinal under-cut grooves intermediate of its side edges and the said plate being provided with a plurality of longitudinal under-cut tongues intermediate of its side edges in positions corresponding with said grooves in said base, the said base being further provided with a longitudinal rabbet at the upper edge of its right-hand side and said plate being provided with a dependingflange at its righthand side-edge received in said rabbet when said plate and base are assembled, the crossseetional width of said rabbet being V,greater than 'the cross-sectional thickness of said flange, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
Q. In combination, separable stereotype plates and bases, the said bases being respectively provided with a plurality of undercut grooves extending longitudinally in their top surfaces between the side edges thereof and with longitudinal rabbets at the upper edges of their right-hand sides, the said plates being` respectively provided with a plurality of depending. under-cut tongues intermediate of the side edges of said plates and with depending flanges atftheir righthand side edges, the said tongues being received in said grooves and said flanges being received in said rabbets when said bases and plates are assembled, the said flanges andV GEO. H. KATTENHORN, JOHN R. SCHMIDEL.
Correct It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent N o; 937,803, granted October 26, 1909, upon the application of August F. Herbslelo, of Cincinnati, Ohio, for an improvement in. Separable Stereotype Plates and Bases, errors appear in the printed speeitieation requiring` correction as folloWs: Page 1, line 93, the reference-numeral 8 should read .9, and the name of the second-mentioned Witness to the signature ofthe speoiieation should Jo/m R. Sc/u'ndel instead of John Re Sohmidel, and
that the said Letters Patent should be read With these corrections therein that the same may conform to the record of the cese the Patent Ooe.
Signed and sealed this 16th day of N ovember, A. D., 1909.
