QUILTING-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 11, 1908. Serial No. 462,148.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE GULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to frames and the like and refers especially to what are known as quilting frames. 7
An object of the invention is to provide means for adjustably supporting the same at different heights and angles for the convenience of the operator.
The invention has for another object the provision of means for varying the distances between the rolls of cloth placed thereon and of securing the same in adjusted position.
The invention has for a further object the provision of means whereby the frame may be reciprocated longitudinally during. the operation of the work thereupon.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawin s forming a portion of this specification, an in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a section of the frame on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 and 11 designate supports which may be walls, posts or the like one of which is provided with an eyelet 12 formed upon its inner face to which is attached a cable 13. The cable 13 extends to the opposite sup ort 11 where it is passed over a pulley 14: an dropped downwardly where it supports'upon the lower extremity thereof, a weight 15. The pulley 14 is mounted in the arms 16 upon the inner face of the support 11 at a parallel height to the eyelet 12. Intermediately disposed upon the cable 13 are pulleys 17 which are provided with depending harps 18 which extend below and about the cable 13 and carry depending chains 19. The pulleys 17 are distanced from each other and are held in such relation by means of a rod 20 longitudinally positioned between the same.
The frame of the device comprises the bars 21 and 22 which are spaced in parallel by means of the rollers 23 and 24, which are rotatably mounted between the opposite extremities of the bars 21 and 22. The opposite extremities of the bars 21 and 22 are enlarged and apertured to receive the ends of the rollers 23 and 24; which are limited in their position by means of collars 25 mounted upon the same against the inner faces of the bars 21 and 22. The outer extremities of the rollers 23 and 24 are provided with ratchets 26 which are adapted to be engaged by leaf springs 27 pivotally mounted upon the outer faces of the bars 21 and 22 and limited in their swinging action by means of the studs 28 mounted in juxtaposition thereto. Cams 29 are mounted on the outer faces of the bars 21 and 22 against. the inner sides of the leaf springs 27. The cams 29 are employed for the purpose of raising the outer extremities of the leaf springs 27 out of engagement with the teeth of the ratchets 26 to permit of the free rotation of the rollers 23 when the same is desired.
The frame is supported by means of the standards 38 and 39 which are pivotally disposed centrally of the bars 21 and 22 and which extend upwardly therefrom. The standards 38 and 39 are secured rigidly in adjusted position by means of the arcuate Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
members 40 and 41 which are pivotally supported upon the outer extremities of the roller 24 at the rear edge of the frame and which extend upwardly and forwardly where they engage intermediately against the outer faces of the standards 38 and 39 and are held in such position by means of a knurled binding screw 42 positioned in each of the standards 38 and 39. The forward ends of the arcuate members 40 and 41 are longitudinally slotted for the purpose of admitting of the angular adjustment of the standards 38 and 39. The upper extremities of the standards 38 and 39 are enlarged and apertured for the reception of the lower extremities of the chains 19 which are passed through the lower enlarged ends of the apertures formed in the standards.
It can be readily seen that the device can be reciprocated longitudinally by reason of V the pulleys 17 engaged upon the cable 13 and that the frame may be vertically adjusted by engaging the links of the chains 19 in the apertures formed in the upper extremities of the standards 38 and 39. The knurled binding nuts 42 admit of the angular adjustment of the same out of the horizontal position so as to raise or lower the forward or working side of the same. By
raising the arms 30 and 31 the materials placed about the rollers 34 and 24 maybe distanced apart according to the requirements and held in such position by means of the supports 32. When the rollers are actuated the leaf springs in engagement with the ratchets prevent the same fromracing and produce the required tension upon the materials.
What is claimed is 1. A quilting frame comprising twobars, rollers disposed between the extremities of said bars, arms pivotally mounted upon the extremities of the forward of said rollers, a roller disposed in the outer extremities of said arms, a support carried by one of said bars for engagement with one of said arms to hold the same in an upward position, ratchets disposed upon the extremities of said rollers, springs carried by said bars and said arms for engagement with said ratchets,
cams carried by said bars and said arms'for engagement at times against saidsprings to raise the same from engagement with said ratchets and means for supporting the frame.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame, rollers disposed in the ends of said frame, arms carried by said frame, a
roller disposed in the extremities of said arms, a support carried by said frame for engagement with one of said arms for adjustably supporting said roller and means for adjustably supporting said frame.
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE OULLER.
