M30 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN F. OHIVIER, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO GEE/[ER FARE REGISTER COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
FARE-REGISTER.
Original application filed January 11, 1904, Serial No. 188,430.
b all whom it may concern:
Be .it known that I, JOHN F. ()HMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fare-Registers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fare registers, and the application is divided from my pending application filed Jan. 11, 1904-, Serial No. 188,430.
The invention comprises a plurality of specific fare printing counters, upon which are registrable the different classes of fares, a grand trip total printing counter upon which is registrable the sum total of all the fares registered on the specific fare printing counters for each trip, a passenger indicating counter, and reciprocating mechanism including a transverse oscillating bar interposed between the specific fare printing counters, the grand total trip printing counter, and the fare indicating counter, whereby, in each operation of a specific fare printing counter, the reciprocating mechanism will concurrently operate the grand total trip printing counter and the trip indicating counter.
Preceding a detail description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1, is a front elevation of the mechanism removed from its casing. Fig. 2, is a vertical section on the line a1-x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a detached view of the reciprocating slide of the grand total printing counter. Fig. at, is an illustration of the printed statement which is taken from the machine.
In a detail description of the invention, similar reference characters indicate corre sponding parts.
The supporting frame 1 for the various parts is of suitable design and construction. In the upper portion thereof is supported the shaft 6 of the passenger indicating counter comprising three wheels 2 which. are loose upon the shaft 6. Each of said wheels has Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Divided and this application filed January Serial No. 354,473.
fixed to its outer side a ratchet wheel 4 adapted to engage each with a ratchet pawl 5 mounted upon a horizontal shaft 3 which has an oscillating movement in arms 7 which are pivoted on the shaft 6. One of the arms '7 is pivotally connected by means of a depending link 8 to a transverse reciprocating bar 9 which lies across the machine and has its ends journaled in the sides of the frame. Below this reciprocating bar 9 there is slidingly mounted a series of vertically-reciprocating members 10, one of which cooperates with each of the specific fare counters 11, there being shown four groups of specific fare printing counters 11. Upon the actuation of any one of these reciprocating members 10, the transverse reciprocating bar 0 will be elevated, and through the connecting link 8, the pawl shaft 8 will be actuated to cause the pawls one at a time to engage the respective ratchet wheels fl: of the indicating counters 2.
Arranged upon the shaft upon which the specific fare printing counters 11 are mounted, is a grand total trip printing counter 12 which is permanently connected to the transverse reciprocating bar E) through a vertically rcciprocating slide 13 so that each actuation of the transverse reciprocating bar 0 will also operate the grand total trip printing counter.
The indicatingcounters 2, in a sense, are total counters in that they are operated each time one of the specific fare printing counters is operated, but these indicating counters are set to zero at the beginning of each trip; the grand total printing counters are continuous in their operations and are not set to zero. "he reciprocating members 10 each actuate a pawl-carryii'ig arm 14;, one of which is associated with each group of specific fare counters; these pawl-carrying arms l-t are pivotally mounted upon the shaft of the actuating wheels of the specific fare counters, and each of said pawl-carrying arms sup ports a pawl 15 which engages the ratchet wheel 16 attached to a side of the primary actuating wheel of each group of specific fare counters, as fully described and illustrated in former patent No. 715,129 of Dec. 2, 1902, granted to John F. Ohmer and Hiram Tyler. Each of the reciprocating members 10 has a rearwardly projected lug 17 with which the selective and operating mechanisni (not shown) is designed to engage in the operations of any one of said reciprocating members.
The printing mechanism associated with the present invention is fully described. and illustrated in my former Letters Patent No. 715,125) and brietly referred to consists of a roll, of paper 18 which is mounted in hinged side plates 19 which are pivotally connected in the lower end of the frame-work; the paper from this roll passes through teed rollers El and below the specific tare printing counters and the grand total. trip printing counter; below said paper is a platen 20 which is actuated by a transverse eccentric bar 23 journaled in said side plate and which turned to elevate ihe platen and the paper against said printing counters, by a key (not shown) in the usual manner, and as illuslrated and described more fully in the patent hereinbettore referred to. The inking roller Q-l journaled in the side plates applies ink to the printing counters preparatory to the operation of printing the statements.
The passenger indicator counters 2 are set to zero through the movement of the hand wheel 25 which has a. gear wheel on its shat't, said gear wheel engaging a gear wheel 27 on the shatt (3 of said counters. The statement shown in Fig. 4t, contains the totals of each specific tare counter, and the total of all the fares.
I claim:
l. In a tare register, a counter for printing the total number of fares for each trip. an indicator comprising a series of counter wheels corresponding to the counter for printing the total number of fares for each trip. and reciprocating connections having among them an oscillating lii't bar to cause said total trip printing counter and said indicator to move in unison. and means consisting of a series of individual operating slides for actuating said reciprocating mechanism to simultaneously operate said indicator and said trip total printing counter.
