OTTO MANN ESMANN OF REMSCHEID-BLIEDINGHAUSEN, GERMANY.
ILLUMINATING-B ODY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 19, 1909.
Application filed December 4, 1907. Serial No. 405,047.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO MANNESMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Remscheid-Bliedinghausen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating-Bodies, of which the following is ,a specification.
The hitherto used method of fastening chimneys and shades of illuminating bodies by means of screws, has especially with inverted incandescent gas lamps the drawback that the glass bursts owing to the expansion under the heat.
The present invention relates to devices for holding the globes, shades and mantle supports for gas lamps, of the kind in which two semi-circular or curved springpressed pivoted arms are operated by leverlike tail-pieces; and according to my inven-. tion I provide two such curved springpressed arms in a holder, the ends of which arms do not actually meet each other, embracing the globe, but the globe or the like is supported at the same time by a third holding point, consisting of a set-screw or a fixed projection.
The two ends of the lever-like tailpieces are on their outer parts provided with a spiral spring in such a manner, that the holding-points of the two curved arms are pressed against the globe or the like, and in conjunction with a third holding point effectively support the globe'or the like.
With inverted incandescent burners the position of the spring 011 the outer part of the tail-pieces has the advantage that the spring cannot be damaged by the waste gases and remains cool. The arms engage the globe, shade, mantle support or the like with two projecting points, while the third holding point consists of a set-screw or a fixed projection. The disengagement of the shade, globe or mantle-support can be effected by simultaneously pressing on the two lever-like tail-pieces, which are under influence of the spiral spring.
VVithinverted lamps it ispreferable to let the projections engage a rim or cavities of the globe, or the like.
The position of the fulcrum of the lever device and of the spring can vary to suit requirements.
In the accompanying drawings, an inverted burner provided with a pair of spring-pressed arms and tail-pieces is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 in elevation and plan respectively.
The arms a serve here only for holding the globe b by means of the two projections c, c. The third holding point for the globe, or shade, 6, consists of a set screw 6. By a pressure on the tail-pieces f, f the spiral spring IL is compressed and globe 6 disengaged.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a holding device for globes, shades,
and mantlesupports, for gas lamps, the
combination with a holder, of two springpressed pivoted curved arms arranged in said holder, two projecting points on said curved arms to engage the globe and thus to support the same, and a set-screw on said holder constituting the third holding point, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at the city of Cologne, Germany, this 21st day of November, 1907.
OTTO MANNE SMANN.
