WILLIAM P. THOMSON AND SAMUEL G. THOMSON, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA., ASSIGNOR-S T THOMSON-THOMSON QOMYANY, OF PHILADELPHI, PENNSYLVANIA,
A PARTNERSHIP.
SPLICE-BAR' FOB RAIL-JOINTS.
Application nl ed November 14, 1908. Serial No 462,736.
To all. whom it may concern: i Be 1t known that we, WlLLiAM P.. THOM- soN and blumen G.,'l`non son, both ofPhiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of'Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usetul Sphcelar for Rail-Joints, of
' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being,` had tothe accompan iing drawings, forming part of this speci cation, in which Figures l to 8, inclusive, are sectional views illustrating di'erent forms of .a splice bars embodying our invention.
Qur invention has relation to splice bars, and is designed to provide a splice bar having an increased amount of metal in its head,
with a relatively light web.
ltlisdesirable to have the upper portion ot' .a barincrease gradually in thickness toward the top, and the point where the taper begrins is a. matter depending upon how much metal should be placed in the upper member in order to meet the particular requirements of the bar. .ln the lighter forms of bars, it is essential that this taper be abrupt, and that the ,web he proportionally extended in length so 'that the upper` member begins to taper abruptly to -form the head at a point between horizontal planes at the top and at the bottom of the' bolt holes. It is essential to keep` the web thin as practicable in order to facilitate the punching of the bolt holes, and it is also essential to keep as uiuc-h metal in the head ofthe bar as possible. I
The present improvementis, as ahoye stated, designed to provide a bar in which -the web shall be as thin as practicable, and
in which there is added to the. inside of the head an increasi-id amount ot metal at-a. place which has heretofore been reserved tor the punching of the bolt holes.
'lo this end, our invention consists mainly in providing a spliee'bar having` its upper member provided with a downwardly and outwardly inclined inner face which intersects' a substantially vvertical tacen between horizontal planes at the top and at the' bot- `toin of the bolt holes. i
Uur invention also consists :in 'providing a bar ci' this character ha ving' its head .further i enlarged on the outside bvineans of a comparatively larrgre abrupt rib alsoextending l down int-o the region of the bolt holes inl the manner described and claimed iriour pend- 111g application .for patent, Serial No. 420,898. i
inafter appear.
This application is in part adivision of our pendlng application, Serial No. 373,062, .filed May 11th, 1907.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 2 wherever seen, designates the upper member of the bar, 3 the foot portion which lits the lower member'extending below the rail base. 22 wherever seen designates a stiffening fillet at the intersection oi' the outer face of the upper member and the upper face of' the foot member for the purpose of eliminating the buckling of the bar at this point. In all of the'orms shown, the bar has a downwardly land outwardly inclined inner face 5, which joins or intersects a vertical or substantially vertical face 6 between horizontal planes at the .top and bottom of the bolt holes. This downward and outward incline may be either a straight incline, as shown in Figs. 4,5, 6 and 7, or it may be a curve oi' varying forms as shown in Figs. l, 2, 3 and 8."
Aln the form shown in Fig. 1 lthe splice har has a portion 7 bent underneath the base ot' the rail, and seating upwardly against the same. It also has a projecting stitl'ening i llangeor-rib 8 inthe saine horizontal plane as the port-ion 7. The bar has a vertical youter bolt-ing tace 8*.
` In the forni shown in Fig. 2, the bar is providedwit-h a. freely depending lower member 9, which is curved inwardly underneath the base otithe rail and terminates ina rib orrnlargeineut 10 at its lower free edge. The outer bolting` face of the splice bar shown in this figure do\virv.'a1dly and inwai-illy inclined, and a washer 10 is provided to forni a square seating face for the ynut or head ot the. bolt.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the lower member extends in a vertical direction at that portion which is between the ties, while Other features of our invent-ion will hereupper surface of the rail base, 'and 4 the.
that portion which extends over the tiesi lies horizontally .in the plane of the rail base,
liected by the gusset or skirt l2. The'outer ligure is also downwardly and inwardly in or bolting' face of the bar shown in this as shown at ll, the two portions being conward its lower y for the fnut or bolt clined, asin Fig. 2, but is deformed as indivl cated at 13 to rovide a gripping face for the head or nut oi) the bolt. l
The f orin'shown Fig'. 4 has a freely de'- y' pending'iange of decreasing thickness toedge, being curved outwardly away from the .base of the -rail, with a con- Vex inner" face and av concave outer face. The outer or bolting face of the bar is downwardly and inwardl inclined, and a washer 14 isv provided to 4orm the gripping face head.l This figure also shows an insulating or'other bearing membery l -15 yinterposed between the bearing portions .1 15x of the splice bar and y the adjacent bearing surfaces ofthe rails.
lexteriorly .enlarged by the rib 16, which isl Fig.
shaped on its u per or outer surface to clear the flange oft e wheel, and which has thc downward and inward taper 17 extendingE belowthe top ol thebolt hole. When this outer rib is used in order to form a Tfhead, l
Iit is not necessary. to make the inner portion i of the head-.extend below -the outer portion i in orderto' get sutli'cient metal in the head', and, therefore,-; tlie under face of the inner i portion of thehead does 'notneed to beexi tended below thecenter of .the bolt hole, alf thou h' itmay be madeto doso as shown in g?. 4A beveled face washer 18 is fitted to the outer faoe ofthe bai` to form the gripping` fece for thenut ,ofthe bolt'. The barb` shown -inthisiigiiredoesnot havea freely i depending flange, but'tenminates in the foot ,l memberwliich titstheibase' tla'i'i'geof the rail, l' and which taperslupwnrdly atboth sides into l the web portion of theba'r.. i Fig. 6 shows a `form'fbar havin l downwardly and outwardlyv inclined inner face extending to a point below the center of l the bolt holes, 'and vwith a verticalouter boltl ing face '19 and with a'. `foot member dependf' ing below the base oir-the rail and of increasing crossesectionftoward its lower end, i
the
the increase in thickness bein 'zat the inner-i' 'shown' in Fig. 5, 'vvitli;.;tl1e exception that the downwardl 'andfoiitwardly inclined inner face extendi; to apoint below the;l center of the boltholefas; in Fig,4 6;@
In the forii'i, slioyiin 'n Fig." 8,.,.they bar is iv provided Witli vertical outer bolting face 20, andhas a'fllang depending V.below the base of the rail and yextending" inwardly uni derneath "the saine d; lterminating lin" Atlie t enlargement 2L/'f j g It will bejs'een.
invention provides fl theamount of l while keeping i at our I member with bolt holes through Vright inner -t'ace of the between two horizontal .--niember and a semis the web with the ininiiniiiii thickness con sistent with this increase and sntlicientl)r` iliiii -iii all casesto prevent c raekii'ig or iuiurin.;Y
of the bars in punching thi.' holes. While our improvement is applicable to bars either the rail base. it isespecially ellicicnt when applied io shallow types ofA bars which do vto add any desired amount of metal to the .toot of the bar. the possibilities of increasing 'the nii-tal iii the head are extremely limited. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the head is Whilil we have Ishown our invention; .as applied to ordinary T-rails, it willbe understood that it is applicablek to rails jot other -sections. 'It will be further understood that shown arefillustrative only, and that itis .witlifOiwithoiit `a portion extending below i 85 the t'orlns of our invention which have been applicable to other forms of bars than those shown.
We cla1in:-- y l. In a rail Joint, a splice bar for rails having an upper-` ineinber with bolt holes through it, bolts through said holes, and nuts on said bolts, said upper -ineinber having a downwardly and outwardly inclined inner face joining an upright inner tace between borizontal planos at the center rand at the bottom of the bolt'liolesfsaid bar lying entirely belonv the lower outer edge ot' t e rail head'and all ofsaid inclined inner face lying below a horizontal plane at the top of the nuts.
