UNITED srnrris PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS A. HAZARD, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, ASSIGrN'OR T0 WILLIAM S. HAZARD, JR., 0]? DES. MOINES, IOWA.
WINDOW-SHADE BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS A. HAZARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful VVindow-Shade Bracket, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this kind of simple, durable and inexpensive construction by which the operator may conveniently and easily attach the bracket to a window frame without the use of screws or nails or similar'fastening devices.
A further object is to provide a device of this kind that may be easily and quickly adapted for use in engaging the sides of a window frame that are accessible on the edge farthest from a window and further to provide a device that may be quickly and easily transformed for use in attaching it to window'frames that are accessibleonly, for this purpose, on the edge nearest the window, so that the bracket may be sustained in the window frame either by outward pressure upon the inner edges of the frameor by inward pressure upon the outer edges of the frame.
A further object is to provide improved complete bracket embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 shows a top or plan view of the same provided with the attachments for engaging the inner edges of a window frame. In
said figure a part of the casing is broken away to show the winding drum and ratchet device. Fig. 3 shows a detail, perspective view of the attachment to be used for supporting the bracket against the inner edges of a window frame. Fig. 4 shows a detail, perspective View of the adjustableend P1606 of the body portion of the bracket.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
I have used the reference numeral 10 to'indicate the body of the bracket. This body comprises a straight flat back portion and marginal edges 11 turned inwardly and toward each other. At each end of this body portion is an auxiliary adjustable body portion 12 having its margins 13 turned rearwardly and then inwardly toward each other, said edges, however, being small enough to enter between the edges 11 and be telescopically connected therewith. Formed on the outer end' of the part 12 is a downwardly projecting arm 14 having a round opening 15 to receive the rounded end 16 of a window shade roller 17 and, formed on or fixed to the part 12 in the other end of the main body portion is a similar downwardly projecting arm 18 having a slot 19 designed to receive the flat end 20 of a window shade roller. These arms 14: and '18 are fixed respectively to the adjustable body portions which are telescopically connected by means of the margins 11 of the main body.
I have provided for securing the sliding body portions in different positions of adj ustment relative to the main body portion as follows: In one edge of the body portion 12 is a series of notches 21 and fixed to the main body portion is a spring 22 having one end extended laterally at 23 and normally resting in a notch 24 formed in the part 11, so that the end 23 of the spring 22 will engage and enter any one of the notches 21 that may be placed adjacent to it and in this way the auxiliary body portion is locked. The forward end of the part 23 is accessible by the operator from the front of the device, so that it can be drawn down to permit the auxiliary body portion to slide in and out.
At the outer end of each of the end body portions on the inner side thereof is a stationary cross piece 25 on which is pivoted a lever 26 having an opening 27 thereon to receive a hook hereinafter described. At the central portion of the main body is a cross piece 28 on the inner face thereof designed to receive and support a small winding drum 29 which is provided with a ratchet wheel 30 on its inner end and with a handle 31 on its outer or forward end in front of the body portion where it is readily accessible to the operator. A spring actuated pawl 32 is pivoted adjacent to the ratchet wheel to normally prevent it from turning in one direction. Fixed to and wound on the drum 29 are two cords 33 extended in opposite directions and having the hooks 341 on their ends.
These hooks may be placed in the openings 27 and obviously when so attached, and when the drum is wound in a certain direction, the ends of the levers 26 will be projected outwardly beyond the ends of the body portion, for purposes hereinafter made clear.
The means for supporting the device on a window frame comprises two parts of similar construction, each having a straight body portion 42 designed to enter and slide between the margins 13. On the rear face of the part 32 is a right-angled extension 43 and 011 the forward face are two forwardly projecting lugs 44 designed to receive and support the brackets 40, which are shaped to receive a curtain pole. hen these two attachments are placed in position, the operator places the outer ends of the part 42 against the outer face of a window frame and he then places the part 43 against the inner edges of the window frame. He then winds up the cords 33 upon the drum 29 and thus causes the outer ends of the levers 26 to engage the parts 34 and force them firmly into contact with the window frame, thus serving to support the bracket on the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, therefor is 1. A window shade bracket, comprising a body portion, two levers fulcrumed to the end of said body portion, means for drawing one end of each lever toward the center of the body portion to project the other ends thereof beyond the body portion and two extensions slidingly mounted in the ends of the body portions to be engaged by said levers and shaped to engage the inner portion of a window frame to support the bracket in the frame by the pressure of the levers upon the extensions.
2. In a window shade bracket, comprising a body portion, arms connected therewith for supporting a window shade roller, two extensions slidingly connected with the ends of the body portion, each having a rightangled portion to engage the inner edges of a window frame, a drum connected with the body portion, a ratchet device for said drum, two levers fulcrumed to the body portion, cords fixed to and wound upon the drum and detachably connected with said levers, said levers so arranged that when the cords are drawn inwardly their ends will be projected outwardly to engage the right-angled portions of the sliding extensions and force them into contact with the inner edges of a window frame.
3. A window shade bracket comprising a main body portion having its margins donbled over it, two end body portions having their margins doubled over them and telescopically connected with the main body portion, a cross piece on each of said end body portions, a lever fulcrumed to each cross piece, means for adjnstably connecting the end pieces with the main body, arms connected with the end pieces and provided with openings to receive a window shade roller, an extension for each of said end pieces comprising a straight body portion telescopically inserted in the margins of said end pieces and having near its outer end a right angled portion designed to be engaged by said levers, the part beyond the right angled portion parallel with the main portion of the extension, lugs on said extension, window curtain brackets supported in said lugs, a winding drum at the center of the main body, a ratchet wheel connected therewith, a handle connected with the drum, a spring actuated pawl to engage the ratchet wheel and two cords fixed to the drum, extended in opposite directions and connected with said levers, for the purposes stated.
