ISAAC ROBERTSON WI-IISLER, or LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.-
ICE-CREEPER FOR HORSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed December 12, 1908. Serial No 467,174.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC ROBERTSON WHISLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefierson and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ice-Creepers for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved ice creeper for horses adapted for use in connection with an ordinary horse shoe at times when the ground is covered with ice and snow and to be removed from the horse shoe at other times, so that the horse can be sharp shod when necessary without the necessity of being reshod and the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a perspective view of an ice creeper attachment for horse shoes constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of a horse shoe with my improved ice creeper attachment applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion of the key for adjusting the ice creeper attachment.
My improved ice creeper attachment for horse shoes comprises a pair of members 1, 2, the latter adjustable longitudinally on the former.
The member 1 comprises a toe portion which is preferably curved longitudinally as at 3 and a rearwardly extending arm 4 which projects from the center of said toe portion. Said toe portion is provided at its ends with oalks 5 which, within the scope of my invention may be either permanently attached to the toe portion formed integrally therewith, or detachably secured thereto so that they may be replaced when worn. At the center of the toe portion on the upper side thereof is a forwardly and upwardly extending lip 6 to bear on the upper side of the toe portion of a horse shoe a between the bottom of the hoof and the upper side of the shoe. The rearwardly extending arm 4 is provided with transverse serrations or grooves 7 on its upper side.
The member 2 is a heel bar adjustable longitudinally on the arm 4 and having an opening 8 through which said arm extends, the depth of said opening somewhat exceeding the thickness of the arm 4. The upper wall or side of said opening is formed with a depending flange, web or edge 9 to engage any of the serrations or notches 7 of the arm 4 so as to lock the adjustable heel bar or member to the said arm 4 at any desired distance from the toe member 8 and according to the length of the horse shoe to which the ice creeper is attached. The said memher 2 or heel bar is provided at its center on its under side with a vertical screw threaded opening 10 in which is a hollow adjusting screw or plug 11 which may be engaged by a key or wrench 12, such as shown in Fig. 4 and turned to cause it to press the arm 4 against the upper side of the opening 8 of said heel or bar member 2 and thereby lock the flange, web -or edge 9 in one of the grooves or serrations when the bar 2 or heel member has been adjusted, so as to secure the members 1, 2 together at the required adjustment. At the ends of the heel bar or member 2 are downwardly extending calks 13 which are preferably of the same construction as the calks 5 of the toe member. On the upper side of the heel or bar member 2 are outwardly and forwardly extending lips 14 which serve to engage the sides of the horse shoe at points near the heels thereof.
My'improved ice creeper attachment is preferably made of steel or may be made of any other suitable material. The same is extremely simple, may be readily manufac tured at slight cost and is very easily applied to or removed from a horse shoe.
What is claimed is The herein described ice creeper attachment for horse shoes comprising a pair of members each having horse shoe engaging means and further provided with calks, one of said members having a bar extending longitudinally therefrom and presenting a serrated face on its upper side, the other member having an opening for the reception of said bar, a flange, a web or edge in the upper side of said opening for engagement of said serrated face of said bar, and an adjusting screw in that portion of the last mentioned member below said opening for clamping said last mentioned member on said bar with its flange, web or edge in engagement with one of the serrations thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC ROBERTSON WHISLER.
