To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN G. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Tents; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in window tents adapted for use upon the interior of the window and adapted to embrace or cover the entire opening thereof and to be connected with the window casing in such a manner that renders the same readily detachable. n y

My present invention has for its particular object the provision of means of adjustment in connection with the tent to adapt the same to be fitted int'o different sized windows to overcome the disadvantage of having to make each tent to meet the requirements of the particular measurement of each window, whereby stock tents may be made, which by simple adjustment may be readily adapted to fit different sizes ofswindows.

In the drawing, a window frame is shown carrying double sash and the vvindonT tent is shown attached thereto and it is not thoughtnecessary to refer particularly to the parts. In this drawing, A 1s a tent covering which may be made of any flexible material, preferably of canvas, but may be made of other materials. This tent is designed to inclose the entire window and to be closed upon all sides with the exception of the side neXt the window which is designed to be open so as to embrace the entire opening except, however, that at its bottom portion suitable openings will be Vprovided to accommodate the reception of the head of the person using the tent. The circumferential edge of the tent around the opening is made generally to conform with the shape of the window; however, at the portions adapted to meet the corners of the window casing, it is formed in a general curve as distinguished from a rectangle for purposes hereinafter to be explained. The circumferential edge of the tent proper is also provided with a series of grommets provided to facilitate the reception of proper fastening means.

When the tent. is of a size to conform with the sizeof the window opening, it is attached by means of applying the circumferential edge of the tent to the casing and then applying the binding strips as B to the edges of the tent and securing the binderV strip to the casing by means of screw eyes or other suitable means, said securing means being' passed through the openings as o' in the binding strip and through one or more of the grommets into the casing, the screw eyes being turned to cross the openings in the binding strip to secure the same in place and to be turned so as to bear the length of the openings when it is desired that the binding strip shall be detached. Similarly, the same form of binding strip is used to secure the edges of the material to a portion of the side casing, in this drawing such binding strip being shown applied to the upper half of the window and bears over in the material in the same manner and is secured in identically the same manner as shown in Fig. 3. A portion of the vertical length of the edges of the window tent is adapted to be lapped over so as to form a pocket and in the drawings herein, this overlapped portion is shown at the lower half that embraces the window. Withinthese pockets are adapted to be passed the binder strip C shown in detail in Fig. 8 and also shown in Figs'. l2 and 3. This strip is adapted to be secured to the window casing in the same manner as the upper binding strip or the one shown in detail in Fig. 6, but it serves the additional function of forming a body upon which the edges of the tent may be taken up or drawn together in the manner shown at a in Figs. 2 and'S, asis'necessary in case a tent covering of larger dimensions 5 than the window to which it is adapted' to be applied, that is, that needs to be taken up or reduced in size at its open portion to adapt it to the smaller size of opening.

The tent is sustained in a proper position bearing outwardly from the window opening, by means of side frame pieces as D, which engage pockets as Z formed upon the respective sides and Within the interior of the tent and being placed near the point near the edges of the tent which are adapted to be secured to the window. These frame pieces bear outwardly to the extreme front of the tent, there being one on eachV side, and are connected by means of a cross frame piece as ,E shown in Fig. The front ends of the side frame pieces. are mortised to conform to grooves within the cross piece E and are adapted to be loosely joined so as to provide a ieXible joint, this character of joint being necessary to accommodate, as when the inner ends of the frame pieces are necessarily adjustable with the tent covering to meet requirements of different sized open ings, there necessarily must be some play 3o between the connecting piece E and the ends of the frame pieces D.

Adjustment is the principal feature of invention herein, and to apply a given sized tent, one presumably made to fit any ordinary sizedwindow opening, the tent must haveusomeradjustable means. In my present invention, vthe adjustment is made to ac-Y commodatefit to window openings smaller than the ,normal size, by drawing the materials together into folds at the edge in the manner shown at a in Figs. 2 and 3, and the drawingvof the material together into folds yin the manner shown reduces the size of the open side of the tentand makes its size to conformwith the complete measurement of the window opening, and having been so reduced,- the binding strips may be applied in the manner shown in the drawings, one end of each of said vertical binding strips being caused'to bear closely down into the corner of the frame and likewise the respective ends of thebinding strips adapted to secure the tent at they top and bottom also bearing closely to thescorners so as to make a complete closure of the window opening. The corners of the tent are made rounding so that thematerial may be drawn around in the corners so as to presenta neat appearance and to morereadily accommodate its attachment to different heights and widths of windows. SometimesV a window will be long andnarrow, other times Vwill be rather shortfandfwide, therefore, to make a tent. adjustable to meetwthese varying con-- ditions necessitates the-making of the same in such a way that the corners at the openings are in a general curve. Gromets in suliicient number are provided to meet the exigencies of any ordinary attachment and vlikewise slots within the binding strips are made in numbers sufficient to accommodate them to any ordinary application. I havel used the ordinary iexible fasteners as i, z', to bind the material upon the main binding strip, placing them as shown to compass at the ends of the folds so as to sustain the material firmly in place on its supportso as to. present a neat appearance.

Wvhen the tent is reduced in size by the taking. up of the edges of the materials in folds to reduce the size of tent openingit is necessary in order topreserve a general neat appearance of the entire tent, that the .for ward or inner end ofthe tent be also takenV up. To accommodate the takinglup4 offthes) material at the forward end, l have provided the clampF which is formed in the shape shown in Fig. l0 and is adapted to bear around the cross piece Ewhen attached, one of such clamps being adapted to be applied at eachend of the cross bar E and each provided with vertical slots in their front. face through which screw eyes are adapted to be passed tosecurethem to the cross piece; E in the manner shown in the drawing, thus adapting the clamp to be shifted up or down so that the cover may be raised to any heightl desired. When the tent is of the natural.- size tovconform to the opening, then the clamps can be omitted entirely.

Iliave shown in detail a means for accomplishing the adjustment of a window tent to.` conform to different sized openings; however, it is obvious-that means indifferenty forms may be used withrgood results, and Iy do not wish to be limitedto the detailsof` construction herein shown.

Inapplying my device, it has beenfound; thatordinarilybinding strips made in one--V piece as-for instance those shown in Figs. 61110 and 8, may be` conveniently applied, the longerone to be applied at the vertical sides. of the window opening and shorterones, as in Fig. S, to the upper and lowerhorizontal portions of the window closure but in applyl ing the tent, in some instances it is found'i convenient toform the bearing strips in `two pieces, as shown in Fig.V ll, the same having.v an adjustable relation, as show-n in said :iig-V ure, one of said sections being provided. with inturned edges as shown in Fig.Y 12 `to support the inner section.

lVhat l claim is:

l. The combination with a window, of a tent wholly on the inside of and covcring; the entire window, said tent being closed on; all sides exceptthe side-next the window, means on said tent for detachably fastening said` tent to the casing lof thewindow, and means supported in4 connection with the-130 edge of the tent covering about the opening therein for gathering the material of the tent together to reduce the size of the opening to` adapt the tent to fit Window openings of different size.

2. The combination With a Window of a tent covering the entire Window, said tent being closed on all sideseXcept the side neXt the Window, of means on said tent for detachably fastening it to the casing of the Window and a gathering strip supported in the edge of the tent about the opening therefrom in a relation to permit the material of the edge about the opening to be gathered together thereon to reduce the size of the opening of the tent to adapt it to fit Windou7 openings of different size, and means connected with the gathering strip and engageable Witlrthe material of the edge to hold the gathered portion of the tent edge from ungathering.

3. A tent like covering for a Window opening, means for sustaining it in tent like form comprising side frame pieces, the rear ends supported in pockets upon the side Walls of the tent body adjacent the Window casing, the forward ends extending to the front Wall of the tent opposite the Window opening, a cross frame piece suitably connected With the tent body and having a flexible joint connection With the side frame pieces, means for securing the Vedge of the tent adjacent the Window to the Window casing, means suitably connected With the edge of the tent adjacent the opening therefrom into the vvindovsT opening, to adapt the material of the tent to be gathered and ungathered to vary the size of the tent opening to accomodate its being adjusted to different sizes of Window openings and means connected with the cross frame piece and engageable With the front Wall of the tent body to engage the material thereof to facilitate its being gathered up for the purpose of reducing the length of the front Wall.

4. A tent like covering Y for a Window opening, being open at the side adjacent the Window opening, means for sustaining it in tent like form, means for securing the tent to the Window casing, a slotted gathering strip supported in connection With the edge of the tent at the opening therefrom in a relation to permit the material of the tent to be gathered thereon and means engageable With slots in said strip and the vWindow casing for securing the gathering strip to the Window casing.

5. A tent like covering for a Window opening, being open at the side adjacent the Window opening, means for sustaining it in tent like form, means for securing the tent to the vvindovv casing, Va slotted gathering strip supported in connection With the edge of the tent at the opening therefrom in a relation to permit the material of the tent edge'to be gathered "thereon, means engageable With the material of the tent edge and the slots of the gathering strip to hold the gathered material from ungathering and means engageable With the slots in said strip and the yWindow casing for securing the gathering strip to the Window casing.

6. A tent like covering for a Window opening, being open at the side adjacent the Window opening, means for sustaining it in tent like form, means for securing the tent to the Window casing, a gathering strip, said gathering strip suitably supported in connection With the edge of the opening from the tent and in a relation to facilitate the material of the tent edge being gathered thereon, and means engageable with the slots in said strip and the Window casing for securing the gathering strip to the Window casing.

7. A tent like covering for a Window opening, being open at the side adjacent the WindoW opening, means for sustaining it in tent like form, means for 'securing the tent to the Window casing, a gathering strip provided With slots therein, the said strip being suitably connected with the edge of the tent at the opening therefrom to facilitate the gathering of the material of the tent edge thereon, means connected With the material and with the slots in the gathering strip to hold the material of the edge from ungathering and means connected With the slots in the gathering strip and With the Window casing for securing the gathering strip to the vvinolovsT casing.

8. The combination With a Window, of a tent like covering for a Window opening, means for sustaining the tent in tent like form, bearing strips for engaging the edges of the open portion of the tent and against the Window casing to support the tent Within the opening of the Window, gathering strips supported in connection with the edge of the tent around the opening, the edge of the tent being gathered thereon to reduce the size of the tent opening and means for attaching said gathering strips to the Window casing.

9. The combination with a Window, of a tent like covering for a Window opening, suitable frame devices for sustaining the tent in tent like form, means for securing the edge of the tent to the Window casing about said opening, means supported in connection With the edge of the tent for gathering the material of the edge of the tent thereon to reduce the size of the open por- -tion of the tent to adapt it to it in different sized Window openings.

10. The combination with a Window of a tent like covering for the Window opening, means for sustaining the tent in tent like form, bearing strips comprising sections slidably related and provided With slots in each section, said strip adapted to engage
