D UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
WILLIAM SCRIMGEOUR, OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO MIRCS FUEL-OIL EQUIPMENT COMPANY, OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
OIL-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed September 6, 1907. Serial No. 391,631.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VlLLIAM SCRIMGEOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a burner for fuel-oil, having means for spraying the oil, supplied under high pressure, and for mixing the oilspray with air, supplied under low pressure.
A burner is illustrated in the accompany ing drawing, in which the figure is a vertical axial section.
The burner comprises a casing 1 having an air-supply pipe 2 and a fuel-outlet 3. An oil-supply nozzle 4 passes through and is longitudinally adjustable in-an opening 5 in the casing, being held in adjusted position by a set-screw 6. A connection 7 receiving a flexible metal oil-pipe 8 is screwed into a socket 9 in the rear end of the nozzle. A stem 10 having on its outer end a fixed handwheel 11 passes through a gland 12 on the rear end of the connection 7. A short portion 13 of this stem is threaded into connection 7, so that its rotation causes itto move longitudinally in the nozzle 4. The nozzle has inwardly projecting lugs 14 near its front end, bearing on the stem 10 and holding it in central position. The discharge end of the nozzle has a spheroidal valve-seat or recess 15 and the front end of the stem has an integral spheroidal ball 16, of the sanie curvature as the recess 15. tice the ball and recess may be spherical. The ball acts as an effective deflector and spraying device for the oil, which is supplied at a sufliciently high pressure. say one hundred pounds to the square inch, to be thrown into spray as it is forced around and over the ball. The concave recess 15 causes the oil to partially envelop the ball before it is sprayed, in such manner that the spray is directed forwardly rather than laterally. and is thereby projected from the aperture 3 instead of impinging against the walls of the chamber 1. The ball also acts as a regulating and shut-off valve. A wide In pracstream of air at low pressure, say four ounces to the square inch, is supplied through the pipe 2 and the mixed oil and air escape through the passage 3. 1
I claim:
1. In an oil burner, a casing having an air inlet and a fuel outlet, and an oil-spraying and controlling device, comprising a supply-' nozzle for oil having a concave valve-seat in its discharge end, a stem longitudinally adjustable in the nozzle, and a combined valve and deflector carried by said stem, having a convex face opposed to said concave valveseat, said parts constructed and arranged to deliver a forwardly moving spray of 011 through said fuel outlet.
2. In an oil burner, a casing having an air inlet and a fuel outlet, and an oil-spraying and controlling device, comprising a supplynozzle for oil having a spheroidal valve-seat in its discharge end, a stem longitudinally adjustable in the nozzle, and a spheroidal valve and deflector carried by said stem.
3. In an oil burner, a casing having an air inlet and a fuel outlet, and an oil-spraying and controlling device longitudinally adjustable in said casing, comprising a supplyv nozzle for oil having a concave valve-seat in its discharge end, a stem longitudinally adjustable in the nozzle, and a combined valve and deflector carried by said stem, having a convex face opposed to said concave valveseat, said parts constructed and arranged to deliver a forwardly moving spray of Oll through said outlet.
4. In an oil burner, a casing having an air inlet and a fuel outlet, and an oil-spraying and controlling device longitudinally adjustable in said casing, comprising a supply-nozzle for oil having a spheroidal valve-seat in its discharge end, a stem longitudinally adj ustable in the nozzle, and a spheroidal valve and deflector carried by said stem.
In testimony whereof. I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
