Description

yROBERT NEWTON, or JERsnYvILLEQLLINoIs.
Letta-rs Patent No. 93,636, dated August 10, 1.869.
,IMPROVEMENT nv RoLLING-CUTTER'FOR PLoWs. e
The Schedule referred to `in these Lettera Patent and making part of thesame.
To all whom it may concern Be it known tbatLItoBnRT 'Nnwfrorcof Jerseyvillc, in the county of Jersey, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and 4useful Improvement in Roh# .Ying-Cutters for Ilows; and I do hereby declare that 'the following is a rfull and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying draw-v ings, and to the. Iettersof referencemarked thereon.
rlhis invention relates to an improved method of journalling revolving cutters, andV consists 'mainly in forming a circular oriiice through the centre ofthe l cutter, and inserting a 'wooden socket `or bushing;
said bushing being` held by wedge-shaped projections on the -bore of the orice, as will be more fully described hereinafter. Y
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation ot my invention, and
Figure 2, a transverse vertical central section of the 'Io enable others skilled in theart to make and use iny invention, I will yproceed to describe fully `its oonst-rnction and method of operation.
A represents lthe cutter, which is composedof a circular plate, with the periphery sharpened to form B B represent flanges, 1igidlyattached -to the centre of the cutter A, and f C is a circular oritice, extending through the centre of the iiunges and cutter.
' c c represent wedge-shapedprojections, on the bore of the oritice C, which extend longitudinally of the same..f
1) represents a cylinder of wood, which has an orifice, C',and is'niude of suitable size to fit the orifice C. into which it is driven. The orifice O is of suitavday of i J une, 1869.
ble size to receive the pin or holt on which the cutter revolves.
The operationor my invention will be readily understood. ,The wooden socket or bushing D is driven `intothe orice C, andthe wedge-shaped projections` crowding the particles together, render its attachment secure. The axis or pin on which the cutter revolves vis introduced' through the' orifice C', and the: cutter is attached tothe plow-beam.
The common manner of constructing revolving cutters is simply to bore out the socket for the axis in metal, but as dii-tand rust are liable to accumulate vat that/point, the bore soon becomes Vso much worn as to render the cutter almost useless, and also difcult and expensive to repair. My plan, however, eiectually obviates this diiiicnlty, as the plowman can easily carry one or more bushings while at work, and when one beconles worn out, another can be readily inserted, thus effecting a great saving ftime and expense:
Inthe Old method, When'the bore becomes worn, it-
is necessary to suspend work, and go to the nearest town, which is often at a distance, to procure another cutter, thus involving considerable expense.'
Having thus fully described my invention,
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
,In a revolvinglcutter, the wooded bushing D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. This specificationv signed and witnessed, this 7th` ROBERT NEWTON.Y Witnesses: f H. O. GooDmoH, B. P. Voomrnns.'
