. TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Application filed November 18, i903. Serial No. 33,282
To all whbm' 'i ilmdyconcern:
dent-of Hamburg, have 'n lvente'd certain new and useful .-Im'- Be it gknowni that I, CARL l1.. E1-IMsEN, a. sabhectof the German Empenor, and resiin the- German' Empire,
provements in Type-VVritiirg 'l\lacl1in'es of an interim iate lever .pin moves vtipwar said slot 7 in which the which the following is a specification-.
This invention relates-to .that kind m'echanismior actuating the *type ever's in typewriting'inachines, in' which. a pin-or an-- tifri'ction-roller carried bythe key lever (or connected to the key lever) engages in a guide slot in the corresponding type lever and is guided' by the surfaces of the saidislot so that W11 11 the d the said pin,- ins iding between the slot surfaces, imparts to the type lever the movement whereby the latter is caused to strike the paper cylinder, afterwhich the pin in-moving back between'the surfaces, returns the typelever into its normal position of restl H In the hereinabove described mechanism operative surfaces of'the guide slot are parallel to each other,'tl ie type lever: is caused to move backwardrand forward,
that .is'to sayfinto and out of; co tact with is operated next insuccession.
the paper; cylinder with equatvelocities. The consequence of this that" the typeleverin its- 'return moveme nt is liable to.
meet and ihterferewith' the type lever that A further drawback'is that the pin is liable to'g'et twisted ,or'j'ammed in its guide slot so that the type lever is rendered hard to work. Now the'present inv'ention has, for'its 'ob ject to remove the hereinbefor'e mentioned drawbacks, an to this end, it consists in making the guide slot substantlally of crescent or sickle shape whereby the center bf 4 the pin in making its forward and backward" [movements describes relatively to the crtrve'd sides or surfaces of the crescentor sickleshaped slot, a closed figure composed of the .two sides of a crescent. This peculiar shape of the guide slot is designed for the-purpose'of causing the pin to move along one surface of the slht. in the upward movement of the intermediate lever and along the other surface OLE-the slot in the downward moveof the said lever. By this means'not onlyis the friction diminished but also the liability of the pin jamming in the guide slot is obviated. Further, as a result of the the difi'erent curvatures of the slot surfaces,
.. 5, recs return movement oithe type lever into its positi "n. of"rest ttlli'GS place with greater {rapidity than the movement of the said lever 1nto. -1ts writing POS1t310I1, SQ'tl1ELU the returning type lever moves more quickly out 66 of the pat-h of the next actuated type lever, and'thus interference of one with the other is obtiated.
One form of this invention is illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanying drawings in which, I
Figure 1 is a. side elevation of the type lever and of the mechanism actuating the same, thepartsbeing shown in the position of rest; Fig. 2 is aside elevation showing 70 the partsflwith the type lever inthe writing position; and Fig; 3 is a side elevation on a larger scale f-the type lever with its guide slot, shown separately.
flhe' type lever, 05, isipivoted at b and has an enlargement, .0, formed with a sickle shaped guide slot, (Z, in which engages a'pin,
"6, (provided with 'an anti-friction roller) projecting 'from the. intermediate lever, 9,
that is fulcruinedatf. The lever, g, is actedst) upon by a-sp ring, ii, that has a tendency to keep-the lever, ,g, and the typelever, a, in therposition of rest shown in Fig/1.. The lever, 'g', |is connected pivotally. at its other end by means o f a rod, '5, to 'the key lever, 1,- which is fulcrumed at is to a part 'of the framework of the machine.
VVhen' the key lever, his depressed the iiiterm'e'diate lever, g, is tilted up at its rear end, whereby the pin, c, (which slides only along the front'surtace, d, (Fig. 3) of the slot, d) imparts an oscillation in the rear 'ward direction to the type lever, agwl ich is thus caused to' strike the papelwcy'lin er, w, as shown' in'Fig'Q. 'VVhen pressure ceases to be exerted on the key lever, Z, the interme diate lever, g, is pulled bythe spring, It, back again into the position of rest. (Fig 1)..
In this movement he pin, 0, passes 'I from the surfac d, on t the shortersurface, 65?,1 9 of the slot-(Fig 3) and as it now ractsonly upon this shorter surface, its movement causes the type lever to return with a greater velocity into its position of rest.
The sickle shape shown in Fig, 3 of the slot, d, in the enlargement, c, of the type lever, is designed to cause thcforward and backward osclllatory movements of the type lever to take place with different velocities; tovenable the pin, 6, to pass from the slot surface, (1, onthe. slot surface, (7", and vice versa; and to insure that it shall slide only along one of these slot surfaces during one and the same oscillatory movement.
The dotted crescent, (Z a, shown inside the sickle shaped slot in Fig. 3, represents the path described by the center of the pin; 6, relatively to the slot surfaces,.(Z (F, in the backward and forward. movements of the type lever.
I claim:
1. A pivotal type-bar having a 'guide slot for its operating member, -the walls of the slot being eccentric'toeach otherf 2. A pivoted type-bar having a guide slotfor' its operating membeigtho walls of the slot being eccentric t0 the pivot and to each other. g
Y 3. A pivotal type-bar having a guide slot for its'operatmg member closed at each end,
the side walls of said'slotbeing eccentric .to each other.
4. The combination with a key lever, of la pivoted type-bar provided with a guide a. pin mounted in said slot, andmeans to impart a reciprocatory movement to the pin whereby the sides, i
6. The combm'ation \Yllll a key-lever, of a pivoted. type-bar provided w th alateral portion hav ng a slot therein closed atboth ends and formed wlrli sides eccentric to each other and'to the pivot, ani-nterniediate lever pivotally connected at one end to" the key lever and a pin on the-other end of the intermediate lever taking into said slot.
