COMBINATION FLY-EXGLUDER AND WEATHER-STRIP.
Speeication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Application filed September 26, 1908. Serial No. 454,870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. CLAY, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain'new'and useful Improvementsin Coinbination Fly-Excluders and Teather-Strips Adapted for Use in Connection with Fly- Screens, otwhich the following is a specitcation.l a
My invention has relation to a combination fly excluder and weather strip for use in connection with fly screens and it has particular relation to the construction and arrangement of such a device.
It is well known that iiies and other insects will enter a house, which is otherwise well screened,l through the space left between the upper and lower sash of a window when open, notwithstanding that the lwindow-may be provided with screens of any of the well known types.
The principal object of my invention is to provide, in a unitary structure, a device which may readily 'be applied to an ordinary window for preventing the ingress of flies or other insects in this manner, as well as acting as a weather strip when the window is closed.
The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily under'- stood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in whichi v Figure yl is a perspective view, partly in section, of a window provided with a Hy screen of the spring roller type, and the device of my present invention shown in connection therewith, Fig. 2 is a similar perspective View of the device detached, and Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views of the meeting rails of two forms of window sash with the device of my inventionshown applied thereto, the rails of the sash being shown in the position assumed when the window is closed.
Referring to the drawings, 5 is the upper or meeting rail of the lower sash of an ordinary window structure and -6 is the lower or meeting rail of the upper sash. As
shown in Fig. l, the window is .provided with a window screen 7 of the spring roller type, but it will be understood that the device of the present invention is equally well adapted for use in connection with any other of the connnon forms of window screen.
The particular embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings consists of a strip 8 of felt, rubber or similar resilient material, and another strip 9 of similar material of less width than the strip 8. The two resilient strips 8 and 9 are clamped or held together for a portion of their width by a casing l0, preferably formed of sheet metal bent longitudinally to confine the resilient strips between the inner faces of the metal; It will of course be understood that the two strips 8 and 9 of resilient material may be formed of a single integral piece, folded upon itself longitudinally, if so desired. The metal casing l() is held in its shape to retain the resilient strips 8 and 9 by means of eyelet like rivets l1, the openings of the eyelets serving to permit of the passage of the screws or nails 12 for securing the device -in place on the sash.
The unitary structure, formed as aforesaid, is secured to the underside of the lower or meeting rail 6 of the upper sash bynieans of the screws or nails l2 being passed through the eyelets 1l and fastened in the sash. The strip S is then bent up and secured by any suitable means such as tacks or glue to the inner face of the meeting rail of the upper sash, while the .resilient strip Q'eXtends horizontally inward and contacts -with the glass of the lower sash. The horizontally dispose-d strip 9 serves to close the space, which' would be otherwise open, between tlie two sash against the entrance of iiies or other insects, while the strip 8 serves as a cushion'and weather strip between the meeting rails of the sash, making a perfect joint instead 'of the usual loose one, preventing the rattling of the windows in a high wind and shutting out the cold in winter weather.
Having lthus described the nature and characteristic features of my invention, wh at I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is:
l. In combination with a window structure, a resilient strip .secured to the upper sash and extending horizontally to contact with the lower sash, a second resilient strip extending between the meeting rails of the ioo upper and lower sash, and means for securing said strips together for a portion of their Width.
2. A unitary structure adapted to be applied to the lower edge of the uppersash of a window; comprising a resilient, strip extend# ing horizontally `to Contact with the glass of the lower sash, a second resilient strip eX-A tending between the ineeting rails of the upper and lower sash, and means for securing said strips together for a portion of their width. Y
3. A unitary structure adapted vto be applied to the lower edge of the upper sash of a window, lcomprising a resilient strip extend-v ing horizontally to Contact with the glass of the lower sash, a second resilient vstrip ,ex-
tending between the meeting rails of the upper and lower sash, and -a longitudinally bent strip between which' the resilient strips are secured for a portion of their width.
l 4:. 'unitary structure adapted to be applied to Ythe lower edge of the-upper sash of -a window',- comprising a resilient strip eX- tending horizontally to Contact with the glass of the lower sash, a second resilient strip extending between the ineeting rails of the u er and lower sash a easin'fr in which the resilient strips are secured for a portion oi their width, and a series of eyelets passing through the structure, said eyelets constitutingrivets for uniting the parts together and providing apertures for securing the strueture in place.
