ELECTRICALIiY-OPERATED VALVE.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (Pet. 5, race.
Application filed Apri126, 1 909. Serial No. 49mm.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'VVARREN W. ANNABLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county .of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrically-Operated Valves; and l do hereby declare the following to he a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to improvements in electrically operated valves, and more part-icularly to such valves adapted to control the admission of compressed fluid 'tothe cylinders of an internal combustion engine, 111 starting the same, and its object is to provide the device with means for preventing intake of air through the device" during the inspiration stroke of the engine; to proyide release for the compression in the cylinders during the compression stroke of the same; and to provide the device with various new and useful features hereinafter IIIOI'Gf fully described and particularly-pointed out in claims, reference being had to the ac-. companying drawings, in which:
Figure 1. is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2. a vertical section of the same through the axis theree of; Fig. a plan view of the same; Fig. 4.
ahorizontal section on the line i'i of Fig. 2; and, Fig. 5. an inverted plan view.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures. i
1 is an induction magnet havingan axial opening therethrough and provided with an exciting coil 2 embedded therein and surrounded by insulating materials 3.
5 are binding screws to which electric conductors are attached, whereby the 0011 is provided with an electric'current to excite the magnet at proper intervals.
6 are insulating plugs in which the terminals are mounted, and 7 the respective ends of the coil 2 engaging the insulated binding screws 5.
i In the axis of the magnet is a longitudinallymovable bolt 8 having avalve 8 at one end engaging an elastic valve seat 9,to
control the flow of airtherethrough. The
- magnet is provided with a-boss 1 surrounding this valve and adapted to communicate with any convenient supply pipe, to bring fluid under pressure to the device. The elastic.
seat 9 is held in place within this bo'ss by a ring or bushing 1.0. On'the opposite end of the bolt .8 is a disk armature -1t normally spaced apart a suitable distance from the magnet by a spring 15,. which spring also holdsthe valve 8 closed. This armature isadjustable on'the bolt 8 by a screw thread, and to prevent chan eof adjustment, the end of the bolt is provlded wit-ha slot in which is a spring a'rm 19 secured to the armature by a lscrewflO, thus when the arm is in the slot, the bolt can not turn'in the armature to change. its adjustment.. In the side of the boss is an opening 10 in which is inserted.
anysuitable pipe (not shown.) to communicate with the engine cylinder, and with the axial opening in the device.
Qne or more side passages 18 are prowill be closed, thus preventing the exit of the compressed fluid through-said passage,
when the valve 8 is open. Y
This device is intended to be used on an internal combustion engine, in shunt circult with the ignition circuits, whereby the magnet will be excited, and the valve 8 opened at the proper time for the compressed fluid to pass through the opening 10, and the pipe inserted therein, to the for starting the engine.
Upon the inspiration stroke of the englne, the valve8 will be closed and the check valve 17 will prevent air from being drawn into the cylinder, and on the compression stroke, the valve 8 will remain closed, and the check valve 17 will, open and permit release of the compression through the passage 18 to aid in starting the engine. The device will thus operate to admit'compressed flu 1d at the proper time to startithe engine; will release the compression in the cylinders at the proper time; will prevent the escape proper cylinder of the compressed fluid used in starting the engine, and prevent admission of outside air on the inspiration strokes.
The engine is not herein shown, it being understood that this device is adapted to be used in connection with the ordinary internal combustion engine, for starting the same, the construction and operation of which is Well known, to those familiar with such engines.
What I claim is:
1. An electrically operated valve, comprising a magnet having an axialopening therethrough and a side passage communicating with said opening, a valve to close said opening, an armature moved by the magnet and connected to the valve to open the same,
and a check valve in said passage to pre vent ingress of fluid and to permit liuid to escape.
2. An electrically operated valve, comprising a magnet having'an axial opening therethrough and a side passage communicating with said opening and with the open air, a valve to close said opening, an armature to open the valve, a spring to hold the valve closed, and a check valve in the side passage to prevent ingress of fluid and to permit fluid to escape.
3. An electrically operated valve, comprising a magnet having an axial opening therethrough and a side passage communicating withsaid opening, a valve to close said axial opening, an armature to open said valve and simultaneously close the side passage, and a check valve in said passage to prevent ingress of air when the valve is closed.
4. An electrically operated valve, comprising a cylindrical magnet having an axial opening and a side passage communicating with said opening and closed by the armature, a bolt in the axis of said opening, a valve on one end of the bolt to close said opening, a disk armature on the other end.
of the bolt to open the valve and close the passage, a spring to close the valve and move the armature away from the magnet, and a check valve in the passage to prevent ingress of air when the other valve is closed.
5. An electrically operated valve, comprising a magnet having an axial opening, a bolt in the axis of said opening, a valve on one end of the bolt to close the opening and a screw thread and a slot in the other end of the bolt, an armature having a screw threaded opening to receive the bolt, and a spring 1 arm mounted on the armature and detachably engaging the slot.
6. An electrically operated valve, comprising a cylindrical magnet having an axial opening and a side passage communicating with said opening and opening opposite the armature, a valve seat in said opening, a removable ring to retain the seat in place, a bolt in the axis of the opening having a screw thread and slot at one end, a valve on the other end of the bolt engaging the seat and closing the axial opening, an arma-
