HENRY FRANCIS KEIL, OF BRONXVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FRANCIS KEIL 8c SON, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y., A FIRM.
riocK.
Application led September 3, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that HENRY Faim ois Knit., a citizen ot' the United States America, and a resident of Bronxville, in the county of Westchester and State ot New York, have invented a certain new and useful Lock, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description or' the invention, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to locks, and particularly to locks of that type which are primarily adapted to be inserted in a notch or recess ordinarily located in the stile of a sliding door, and being provided with a combined cup escutcheons and lock face, and it has for its object to simplify the parts and to reduce the number thereof, thereby producing a compact and comparatively inexpensive lock mechanism, the advantages ot which will be understood by one skilled in the art by reference to the following specification of the invention in which are embodied certain novel features orp combination and arrangement of parts of simple construction and efficient in operation, all of which will be hereinafter specically described and fully illustrated in the drawings.
In order to enable the invention to be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same by reference to the drawings, illustrative ot' one embodiment of the invention, which accompany and form a part of this specilication, and in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a door equipped with my lock; Fig. 2 is a front view of the same; Fig. 3 is a section of the combined escutcheons and lock face taken on the line 3, 3, Fig. l; Figs. 4 and 5 are views of the lock mechanism, the door pull being respectively shown in its two positions, the cover of the lock casing being removed, and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the lock casing.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly by reference symbols or characters to the drawings, A, A denote my combined cup escutcheons and lock face, constructed and arranged to rest upon the sides of a door and to extend around its front edge, and preferably overlapping and covering a recess or notch C cut Specification of Letters Patent.

in the stile ot' a sliding door in order to contain the lock case D, and ordinarily made of sheet metal so far as the lock face is concerned. rEhe said combined escutcheons and lock face is formed with a recess or cup A2 located in each escutcheon, and the extensions or front portions of the said escutcheons each have orifices a3 through which project -the narrowed heads of screws E. rihe combined escutcheons and lock tace may be made integrally of one piece of metal, as shown in Fig. 3, or the same may consist of a plurality ot parts rigidly secured together.
i provide means for adapting my coinbined escutcheons and lock face to be used fer sliding doors of different thicknesses, which preferably consists in making the same so as to be expansible and adjust-able as regards the width of the lock face, as, in the present embodiment, by forming the same with a plaited or folded lock tace, the folds c2 ot the same ordinarily lying between the lock case and the heads or' the screws E, and constructed and arranged to be expanded or separated by turning the said screws. The shanks of the said screws work in threaded orifices in the preferably solid and laterally projecting lugs or abutments D2, projecting from the sides of the lock case, and may be operated by means of a tool inserted in the orifice a3. When the folds a2 are separated, the opening thereby formed in the lock face is closed by the strips at which are cut :trom the top of the folds and bent so as to lie behind the lock tace.
The lock casing` contains a door pull G of any suitable size and construction, and such preferably as is ordinarily employed in connection with sliding doors, and the said lock casing also contains a lock bolt or hook F, constructed and arranged to be used to lock a sliding door, which lock bolt or hook is located adjacent to and on one side of the said door pull. rlhe lock bolt F may be actuated and controlled by any suitable key and bolt retaining mechanism.
By arranging the mechanism in my lock so that the lock bolt F, operated by its suitable controlling devices, as the tumblers F, and the door pull G, operated by its suitable controlling devices, as the spring G and detent G2, so that the same lie side by side within t-he casing, and constructing the same so that they both extend out of the common orifice d formed in the face of the lock case D, a compact and serviceable device is formed.
The speeiic form of lock shown herein is not claimed in this application as any suitable door lock and door bolt may be used in connection with my lock casing.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of Construction shown and described, for obvious modiicat-ions will occur to a person Skilled in the art.
That I claim as my invention is:
A combined escutcheone and face plate formed with recessed portions or cups located in the escutcheons and having folds or plaits arranged in the face plate, whereby the same may be expanded in width, in combination with a lock casing formed with laterally projecting square lugs or abutments adapted to form bearings for a door pull, the said face plate having a continuous orifice for the look bolt and the door pull, a lock bolt and door pull contained within the lock casing, and a cover for the lock casing cut away to registerwith the said abntments, and adapted to also form a bearingl for the door pull.
In testimony of the foregoing speciication I do hereby Sign the Same in the city of New York, county and State of New York this third day of J une 1907.
HENRY FRANCIS KEIL.
