' To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JonaY ALBERT MCNA- MARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Concrete-Molding Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for molding articles of a cementitious nature, such as concrete blocks, bricks, and the like.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide novel means whichwill thoroughly com act the material prior to and upon its de ivery into the molds, said means also forming smooth water-proof snrfaces upon the articles that will secure a highl effective nish. f
A filrther object isv to provide means which will form the material into the shape of the mold or receptacle and produce core openings therein prior to the introduction of such material intothe'mold, said means being -adjustable to various sizes of molds. I
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of the' mechanism, but illustrating'V the parts in a position to deliver into a mold. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through the machine, substantially on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on the line 5-5 of F 1g. 2. Fig. G 1s a detail view of a portion of the elevating means for the forming mold.
Fig. 7 is a face view of one of the clutch members. Fig.V 8 is a horizontal sectional view through the clutch. Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view through the clutch operating mechanism. Fig. 10 is a detail sectional view through the holding means for the core of the forming mold. Fig. 11 is a horizontal sectional view through the forming mold. Fig. 12 is a detail sectional view on the line 12-12 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference numerals 'designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. In the embodiment illustrated, a-suitable frame 12 is employed having in the lower portion thereof, a platform 13 on which the molds are placed. One of these molds is illustrated and is designated 14. It is provided with suitable cores 15 and a removable pallet 16.
Mixing and feeding mechanism for the mold is mounted on the frame. In the embodimentdisclosed, a casing 17 is employed, in which are mounted rotatable stirrcr mem bers 18 revolubie in opposite directions and having radial blades 19. The bottom of the casing is in the form of a trough 2O having a spout 21 delivering into the upper end of an inclined rotatable drum 22. The drum is suitably mounted on roller bearings 23, and has a worm gear 2-1 engaged with a driving worm 25. A shaft 26, carrying the worm, is belted, as shown at 27 to a pulley 28 carried by one of the stirrer shafts, and the two stirrer shafts are connected by a crossed belt 29. A driving belt 30, connected to the stirrer shaft, is journaled on a driven shaft 31, and is connected to a sprocket wheel 32 also journaled on said shaft. VThe sprocket wheel is operated from any suitable source of power by means of a sprocket chain 33.
An elevator for the material is shown at 34, and has at itsupper end aspout 35 delivering to the upper stirrer member 1S. A water reservoir 36 has connected thereto a pipe 37 provided with a perforated portion 38 locatedv .within the drum 22.
The lower or delivery end of the drum 22 is located a considerable distance above the mold supporting platform 13, and intel osed between said platform and the drum,
standards 39 rise from the corners of the mold supporting platform 13, and slidably mounted on said guide standards is said holder or forming mold. This mold consists of side walls 40 with end walls 4l 1ocated between the side walls and adjustable toward and from each other. Braces 42, carried by the side walls, project beyond the opposite edfres thereof, and have openings 43 that receive the ends of tie bolts 4-1 bridging the space between said side' walls. Clamping nuts 45 are threaded upon these tie bolts, and thus serve to effectively secure the walis in coperative relation. At the same time, by loosening the nuts 45, it will be evident that the end walls 41 can be 46, which receives the material from the drum, and directs it into the holder or mold.
stitutes the delivery end of the holder or.
mold, and is controlled by a closure in the form of a sliding gate 4T operating in guideways 48 carried by the ower end of the holder or mold. Cores 49 and 49* are located in the forming mold, and in line with rso lthe cores 15 of the finishing mold. The
central core 49 is suspended by across piece 50, and the cores 49 are located on opposite sides thereof. The cores 49* are held in place by bolts 51 passed through the end walls and threaded into the opgmsite sides of the center core, as illustrated in Fig. 10. Each of the cores 49* has collars 52 projecting from orieside thereof and surrounding the bolts 51, and nuts 53 screwed upon the bolts, serve to maintain the cores 49* in fixed positions. lVith this arrangement, it will be evident that the cores may be ad justed, and if desired one or more can be readily removed. Consequently when different molds are employed in the machine, the holder or forming mold can be modied to correspond thereto.
The holder or forming mold, while of the same cross sectional area, as the finishing mold 14, is of considerably greater height than the same, and has a vertical movement between the top of a mold placed beneath it and the lower end of the drum 22. For the purpose of .effecting this movement, spaced levers 5-lare fulcrumed between their ends, as shown at 55 on the frame, and have their outer ends pivotally connected to the upper portion of the forming mold. Other levers 56, fulcrumed at their forward ends, have link connections 57 with the rear arms ofthe upper levers 54. Fixed upon the shaft 31 are rotatable driven heads 58 provided with cams 59 and cam rollers 60. -These cams and cam rollers succes sively engage with the rear ends 61 of the levels 5G. Consequently it will be evident that if the heads are revolved, the cams and cam rollers G0 operatin on the levels 56, will move the same downwardly. This downward movement will be transmitted to the levers 54 and thus cause the` forming mold to be elevated toward the feeding means or drum 22.
In order to connect the driven shaft 31 to the driving member or sprocket wheel 32, the mechanism disclosed more articularly in Figs. 7 and 8 is employ The combined sprocket wheel and pulley has at its inner end a clutch member G2, and another clutch member 63, feathered as shown at 64 upon the shaft 31, is movable into and out. of coaction with the member 62.' This movement is effected by means ofa swinging arm G5 having pin connections 6G with the clutch member 63. said nrm being rotatable with the shaft 31. and having a. spring connection (3T therewith. The spring connection aforesaid serves to urge the clutch member G8 into coaction with the clutch member G2, and it will be evident that when the members are in coactingrelation, as disclosed in Fig. S, the shaft Ill will he revolved with the driving wheel 3Q. Consequently the heads will be rotated, and the mold elevated. .Vhen elevated, however, it is necessary that the rotation of the heads be stopped, and for this purpose` a combined stop and clutch actuating device, in the form of a hook GS is pivotcd between its ends on one-of the standards of the frame, and has an outer inclined track 69 movable into the path of movement of an extension T0 on the arm 65. The upper end of the stop hook 68 is provided with a slot T1, and the offset terminal 72 'of a depending arm 73 is engaged in the slot. This arm, as shown particularly in Figs. l and 3, has outstandlng fingers 7-1 secured to one of the leveds 54. "ith this arrangement when the levers v path of movement of the extension 70. Conv sequently as said Aextension strikes the track, it will be moved inwardly, thus swinging the arm in the same direction against the tension of the spring GO and carrying the clutch member 63 out of coaction with the clutch member 62, thereby releasing the driven shaft 31 from the driving member lVhen the parts are released, as above described, it is desirable to lock the mold elevated until a predetermined amount of material has been deposited therein and the j following mechanism is employed for this purpose...-, The rear ends of the levers 54 are provided with brackets 75 having inclined tracks 76, and swinging locking arms 77 pivotcd upon the frame, as shown at 75 have rollers 7 9 that operate on the tracks when the mold is elevated, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. Springs S0 having adjustable connections 81 with the arm 7i' serve to urge the` rollers upon the track and hold them thereupon until the weight of the material in the mold is sufficient to overcome the tension of the s rings, whereupon the rollers and arms wil be forced rearwardly and the mold ermitted to drop, as hereinafter explained).
Automatic mechanism is employed for effeet-ing the operation of the gate 4T. This gate has link connections 82 with the depending arms 83 of bell crank levers, and these levers are carried by a sleeve S-l and have rearwardly extending arms 85 disposed in the path of movement of a roller 86 jourmp1s naled to and between the heads 5S. It; will thus be evident that as the heads are revolved, the roller 86 striking the rear end of the arm S5 of the bell crank will move the same downwardly, thus `swin, ';ing the arm S3 in a direction to cause the gate 47 to slide to its closed position. The roller SG is preferably disposed' slightly in advance of the `cam rollers 60 mounted on the outer sides of the heads 5S. The said bell cranks furthermore have upstanding arms Si', and links S8, connected thereto, are connected to upstanding ears Silof a trip 90. T his trip has its forwardly extending end disposed in the path of movement of a pin 91 carried bythe forming mold. Therefore upon the downward movement of said forming mold, the trip 90 will be swung, consequently drawing upon the lings 88, swinging the depending arms S3 rearwardly, and causing the gate 4T to o )en v The operation of the machine is as follows: The material in proper proportions' and in dry condition iscarried upwardly by the elevator 34 and delivered through the spout, 35 upon the upper revolving mixer 1S. 'lhis mixer throws it upon the lower op- )ositely revolving mixer so that the material is thoroughly comminglcd and is delivered by the spout 21 into the drum 2:2. Here it is moistened and again mixed, finally passing from the lower end of the drunr. into the top of the forming mold. Assuming the mold in elevated position, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, it will remain in said position until the weight ofthe material placed therein, together with the weight of the mold is sufiicient to overcome the tension of the springs 80, whereupon, as already described, t 1e rollers 79 will )e forced rearwardly and the mold will drop. In the meantime, a finishing mold 14 has been placed upon the platform 13 directly below thc lowerl end of the forming mold, and as the said forming mold drops. the pin 91 striking the trip 90 will can@ the gate 4T to open. The result is that the material will drop with considerable force into the finishing mold and fill the same. The downward.movement of the forming mold will of course swing the levers 54 and this will carry the stop hook 68 out of engagement with the extension T0 of the arm 55. Therefore the spring 6T will act to "carry the clutch member (33 into coaction witli the clutch member G2, aiul the driven shaft 31 will be clutched to the driving wheel 32. The heads 58 will therefore be rotated, and thus the roller vSG will engave the rear arms 85 ofthe bell crank,l swinging the same to close the gate. Immediately afterward the cam 59 and cam holder G0 will engage therear end (3l of the levers 5G, Swingin" the same downwardly and elevatin'r the tiirming mold. Upon this movement, the locking rollers 79 will reingage upon the traek 76 and as the stop hook GS is no w positioned in the path of movement of the extension T0, the clutch will be operated to disconnect the driving and driven members. The mold will thus be locked until the feeding means has again delivered a sullicient quantity to force the rollers from the track against the tension of the springs which tension can be regulated as desired by hooking more or less of the coils to the arms.
4One of the features of importance in the machine is the above described forming mold. It is preferably constructed of sheet metal, and it will be evident that it contains a quantity of material sullicient Vto form a number of the blocks or other articles. lach time it falls therefore the material dropping with considerable force will be compacted, and furthermore the action of the material against the smooth sides will cause the surfaces to assume a smooth polished appearance and make them substantially waterproof. It will also be observed that the openings will be formed for the cores so that inner as well as outer surfaces of the above character will thus be `produced. At. the y tages of the herein described invention will y be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a molding mechanismv of the class described, the combination of a feeding mechanism having a fixed lpoint, of discharge, a'forming mold disposed under the same and movable in the line of fall of the materiaifronl the feeding means and having a ho per to receive the said material, said mol being divided into compartments open at their upper and lower ends, a tixed finishing mold divided into compartments communicating with those. of thel forming mold, and means for actuating the forming mold back and forth between the lixed mold and feeding means to compress and deliver die material to the finishing mold.
2.
