l To alt whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, EDMUND S. Simeon; a citizen of the United States, residing et Dayton,` in the county of. Montgomery and State of Ghio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cesh#Registers.,`
{of whichv I .declare the following to he n full, clearend exact description.
This invention rrel/etes' to cash registers and more particularly to such registers as vhave printing mechanism operated in connection with the registering devices, and the main. objects ofthe invention are to improve. the construction of such printing mechenism and lto reduce the number of parts.
l The invention also provides improved l means for carrying the inking ribboniused in such mechanisms, which. means permit quick and easy 'detachment and reettachmentof seid Aribbon to its esrrying-means.
Asn further improvement paper feeding devices. of anixnproved form nre provided,
the object ofthisl part of the invention being to sec-ure a uniform extent of feed. In many. cash registers the detail strip Y.so-celled7 is -Wound on a eedin roller and it is obvious f that the extent of eed of the'peper will in such cases graduallyA incrceseiif the roller is turned throughs constant angle ateeoh operation. To prevent this@ Ineens for gradueily'decreasing the engnlerunoveroent of the -eedmg roller ere provided, the 4seid means bei-n controlled by thediemeter of the roll of peper elreedy wound'. This mechanism servesto 'feed-the pe er n nearly -fcionstnnt n.'niount7 endthereby prevents the emonnts printed on the 'peper from being .seperated by e. fvzonsideridole;space?A when the nei part. of the'stri'p is being; printed on.`

When 'this ,printing (27) the lspring;m (28) is compressed :nid When seid hernnier is released forces it np against the typeu) to take en 'impression thereiirorn. f i
From the shove described mechanism it will he pleiiinly seen tlmt each operation. of the innchiiie the reciprocating rock (le) rotates the siiei't (16') onecoin'plete rotation thereby 4 actuating the printing hammer and theft theV e position e heerinff for the key couplerlQ) (see Fig. inst to this shaft is'neolle'r (35) to 1) and which is pivotedf at per'ai) et @ratchet (38) mounted on the shuftvot tixereceiving ro1l(38). lilounted on the (B6) n spring pressed end stored upon e re. Tinesaltati;z extends so arranged es to engage the teeth- :receiving roll increases amount of peperleed at each operation, of
rieed, roller ,bell crank arm y() at one operation of the machine. A spring pawl- (el) is pivoted 'at fand eixjagesthe teeth of the ratchet (38) to prevent any backward movement of the receiving roll.
The inlring ribbon. (ef5) is fed over the guide pins 16, et?, e8, 4.9, and 50 between ithe type wheels and the printing hammer, over a removable pin (5l), back between the type wheels and printing hammer, over the and under and overthe tivo rollers of a spring comprises-'a bell crank lever (53) carrying at each end roller. These rollers (54A) are yieldingly held by a spring (54e) in their normal position as shown in Fig. 2.
-' rlhe tension device is shown in Fig. 2. in its normal position; when it is desired to loosen the ribbon the lever is rotated slightly about ils pivot (55^)nntil a boss (56A) on a leaf spring (57^). shown in dotted lines can spring into a hole (58A) in tlie lever (53).
"lhis spring will hold the lever in its new position until it is positively returned to the position shown 1n the iigure. .A train of gears (55, 56 and 57) -transmits vthe 'movement of the receiving roll (33) to the feed roll (.52).
t removable 60) (see Fig. 3^) Whichhas afslot (6l) in its upper end and also has a. circular recess ((32) adapted to receive a shoulder (63 or a spring plunger (64) which is operated by a lever (65), this lever (65) is pivoted at (66) to a collar (67)' which forms part of pin (68).t `The recess (62) being'engaged by the shoulder (63) prevents anylateral displacement ofI the arm (60) and the end ofthe slot (61.) engaging the pin (68) shown' in Fig. 2)
' prevents it from swinging about the plunger (64e) as a pivot. From the above description itwill be seen that by pressing mon grasping the arm (60) bythe knurled lateral projection (70) the pin can be removed ribbon at (ich) `an 'iripression will be' vtalren upon both the check and the paper strip the machine.
From this description it will be seen that the construction provides for a looped ink ribbon having a holding device forming the loop, on one side of the platen or impression paper upon' the receiving roll.V
tension means which osepin (5l) is mounted on 5a essere means, While on the opposite sine or the platen,`means, herein shown as a pin 50 and a roller 52, one above and one below the printing plane, cause the'ribbon to separate so as to leave space for the insertion of a check or other record material between the-sides Voi' the loop or ribbon, and in the direction of travel thereof. This construction is. very simple but eiiiciently provides for the operation stated. `Inking ribbons are extremely flexible and bend readily, so Vthat it is not possible easily to insert a record material from the side of a ribbon and nearly inthe plane of the ribbon, but in cases Where a check is to be used, easy insertion of the check is necessary. For this reason the parts of the ribbon are separated 'the printing plane whereby the check may be easily inserted.
'lheoperation of the device will, it is tion, and need notbe given in detail.
l/Vhile the form of mechanism here shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the .invention tov the one form of embodiment herein disclosed, for it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
