Specification of Letters Patent.
VALVE.
Patented Sept, 28, i902 implication filed August 31, 1807. Serial No. 390,953.
To all whom it concern lie it, known that we, (inouon ii. 1* nos'r and Danna, Monoan, citizens of the United States, residin at liloines, in the county of Poll; and State of lowa, have invented a certain new and useful Valve, of .vhieh the following s specification.
Our invention relates to that class of valves in which the valve is opened or closed by n'iovcinent of the valve stem to and -from the valve seat, snrh, for instance, as the ordinary globe valve in general use. In valves of this class, when the valve raised from its soat, the material flowing through the valve is usually prevented from osraping around the valve stem by means of a stalling box; and in the event that the stuffing box should leak, there is often oonsidorable dillicnlty in renewing the packing material, without first. relieving the pressure on the interior ol the valve Casing, booauso when the valve casing is, for instance, iilled with steam under pressure, an operator, upon removing the parking material might be injured by the osi-aping steam. I
()ur object is to provide a 'valveor this class, of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, so arranged that when tho valvo is lnovod to position at its limit away from tho valve seat. the passage-way from the interior of tho valvo casing to tho stalling box will be closed. so that the paolcing material may be re -'lilv removedand replaced without poi-milling the escape of material l'rom tho valvo through the bonnet around the valve stem. 4
More specifically. it is our object to pro vido a device of this kind having a scaling member l ormcd on {no valve stem, and a soat formed in the valvo bonnet, and so shaped and arranged as to be solt'- :lcansing. and also so arrangod that any sodimont that may accumulate on said seating membor will be moved oilhor upwardly or downwardly rolaiivo to tho contact point of the scaling mombor so that such sediment will not inlorl'oro with tho porl'oot scaling of the scaling mombor against its soal.
()ur invention consists in tho ronslrnclion, arrangomonl and combination oi tho various parts oi the doviro, whorcby the objools oon toniplalod are attained. as hereinafter moro l'ully sol l'orlh. pointed out in our (llllll and illuslratod in tho :u-oompanving drawings, in \vhir'h Figaro, i shows a vorliral central sectional view of a globe valve embodying our invention. Fig. 2 shows an enlarged vertical sectional view of the valve stoln, the bonnet and the stalling box embodying our invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, we have used the refer-cure numeral 10 to indicate the valve casing provided with a valve seat 11. -This casing is of the ordinary instruction, and of itself forms no part oi our present invention. Mounted in the casing 10 is a bonnet 12 having an opening oxtending longitudinally through it. The upper portion of said opening is of a size to receive a valve stom, and permit the valve stem to move freely through it. Near the upper end of the bonnet is an enlarged oylindrioal ohambor 1?, having at its top a ooncave seat l-l formed with sides extending from tho narrow opening in the top of the bonnet to the larger chamber beneath said opening. 'lho lower portion of the interior of the bonnet is formed with a screw thread 15, and sorewod to the top of the bonnet 12 is a stalling box 16 ot'lho ordinary kind.
'Vlho valve slom (romprisos a body portion 17 having on its lower end a valve 18 of the ordinary kind, dosigllcd to co-aot with the valvo seal ll. This valve stem projects through tho. bonnet l2 and has a screw threaded portion 19 to engage the screw threads 15. it is also provided near its uppor end with a seating member 20, which has a rounded surl'aro designed to engage the scat 14. Below the seating member 20 we havo formed an annular recess 21, and above the soating member 20 we have FOllllttl a sooond annular roocss both of said annular recesses being smaller in diameter than the portions of tho valve stem in which they are Formed.
In practical use. and assuming the parts to bo assembled as shown in Fig. l. and assuming furlhor that it is dosirod to remove the shilling box It then the operator rolalos the valve stem in a direction roquirod for moving it upwardly until tho roundod porlion oi the seating mcmbor 2 ongagos lho valvo soul It. Whon this is dono. a lighl joint is provided that will close lho psago way from tho inlorior of tho valvo ca. ng to the shilling box. it l'roquonlly happons that. sodimcnl ot' inrruslalion is l'orna-d upon the scat i l, and also tho roundod oaling mombor 20, and this nmlorial would of course prevent a porl'orl scaling ol' the sealing llowovoi', [ho said soaling memla-ivdfl is brought against its seat with a rotari' movement when the valve stem is turn d. and. henee, the sediment oi inerustat'ion will bebroken loose. ()nr object. in
making: the seating member 20 rounded, is
to "form a eontaet point on said seating member that is eomparattvelr small and from 'whieh the sediment or inerustation may easily be broken loose. When this sediment or inernstation has been broken loose, it will likely be 'l'oreed upwardly by pressure from the interior of the valve casing and, henee. by providing the annular reeess 22. this material may enter said reeess and will not prevent a pert'eetseating ot the seating member ill. whit-h would be prevented if no outlet or est-ape were provided for the sediment or inernstation that has been broken loose from the eont at t' point oi the seating member. andthen rtll't'ttl above said eont'aet point.
'lhe annular recess 21 below the seating member 20 is for the purpose of receiving and holding any inerustation or sediment that may fall below the seating member, and to prevent same. from gathering; or becomin; deposited in the screw threads of the valve seat. where. itwould be detrimental as it. would tend to prevent the turning of the valve stem.
\Ve elaim as our invention.
V In a device of the class described, the combination of a alve easing having av valve s-at therein, a bonnet mounted on the valve easing and formed with a valve stem opening, r-erew threaded at its lower portion and having at its top a seat with sides tapered upwardly and inwardly, a shutting box at the top of the bonnet, a alve stenrbaving a serew threaded portion designed to be seated in the screw threaded portion of the bonnetand also having above the screw threaded portion a seating member having a rounded engaging portion designed to engage the sides of said seat and alsohaving above the seating member an annular recess designed, when the valve is closed, to stand in position above the seat and also having below the seating member a second annular recess above the screw threaded portion of the 'alve, said valve stem also having at its lower end a valve to engage the valve seat in the valve easingvfor the purposes stated.
