A Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led March 24, 1908. Serial No. 422,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that we, WILLIAM H. OBAN- NoN and JAMES MJ FIELD, citizens of the United States, residing at San Angelo, in the feount-y of Tom Green,'State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Spring-Motor, of which the following' is a. specification.
This invention'ielat'es to a motor for driving light machinery by means of spring 'power operating through gearing to a belt chine to be driven.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and etlicient motor for the purpose designed; a motor ythat can be quickly and easily applied, as for-instance to the underside of a sewing machine table and geared lby/'a belt to the belt wheel o't' the sewing machine,'one-that can be wound up by any person'cafpable ot using asewing machine and which will/run continuously for pulley and froin-thencefby a belt to the maseveral hours at a'veage speed without rewinding; and/ linally, one w ich can be started and stopped rat will' a d its speed regulated' by: 'the simple act of moving a lever or screw rod( f With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement. of parts hereinafter described and definitely claimed ref-l erence ing,in Whichv y Figure 1 is ain-elevation of the improvedl motor'applied tol a sewingmaehine viewed from the drivinfr end; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the motor and a 'part of a sewing machine seen from the fronti- Similar referencenumerals are used for the same parts in all the figures.
The numeral l indicates a sewing machine table or stand for 'supporting the sewing machine 2. r
3 indicates the usual driving sha-ft, 4 the belt ipulley and 5 the balance Wheel all as nsua Beneath the table 1 is fastened the motorl (hinsuch relation to the sewin machine that the grooved belt pulleys on t e sewing machine and the motor will lie in the same fthe frame plates 7 at the top are brackets 7'a being had to theaecompanying draw-` bymeans of which the motor is attached to the table 1.. It preferred, the l-rainle plates themselves may be bent and fastened directly to the stand. Journaled plates 7 are two .horizontal winding shafts' l0 and 10", each shaft earryinfg `respectiifely a tlat helical driving spring 11 and` 11 attached at their inner ,ends in the usual manuer'to the shafts and attheir outer ends to the posts S or other portions of the trarne. A primegea'r wheel 12 is mounted to turn freely on the shaft but connected to turn therewith in one direction by means ofthe usual ratchet and pawl device 13. A. similar prime gear wheel 12"l and pawi and ratchetlconnect-ion are mounted on the Winding shaft 102.
with and rotate, respectively, pinions 1t and ista fixed on second or' intermediate shafts 15 and l5n which shafts also carry, respectively, second gear whe/els 1G and 16a. A thirdjfor auxiliary shaft 17 journaled between 'the shafts 15 and l?a has fastened" thereon fa third gear wheel 1S and a pinion 19, the lat ter in engagement with both second gear wheels 16 and 16a. rihe third gear wheel 19 rotates a pinion 20 on the fourth or driving shaft 21 which carries a grooved belt pulley pulley 22 a belt 23 passes to thel grooved pul- ,ley at on the sewing machine. The winding the outer side oit' the motor and are squared to receive a winding key.
By the use of two springs for driving the band wheel through arrangement of gearing just described, the necessary power requiring little power. Should greater power' with the same speed he needed more than two spring driven shafts can be used;
The first cost of a motor such as described cally nothing. When in use e casing, indicated by the dotted line 24, will inclose the motor to protect it from dust and prevent clothing and material being sewed from catching in the gearing.
means of a brake lever 25 pivoted at one end to the frame plate 7 and swiveled at its other end to a vertical rod 26 threaded at its upper end and extending through a threaded in the frame i 22 outside the frame 7. From the grooved and speed are obtained for'runningmachines' is slight and the running expense is practi,
The speed of the motorie regulated hy l nut 27 seated in a depression'intlie table 1 The prime gear wheels 12 andlQa engage shafts 10 project beyond the frame plate 7 on near thebalance Wheel 5. A button fastened on the upper end of the rod 26, the rotation of which operates the brake lever. A disk or collar 29 is rigidly secured on the shaft 2l of he groovecl pulley under the brake lever so that as the latter is mover. 'pressure on the Llislr or collar 29 is increased or diminished and 'the speed o1e the motor changed accord' f Having des@ olaiin nenv and Patent is: i
The combination Wirh a sapporiing tablea of -gairs of epposiiely disposed angle-broek Aits rigidly moonl'r-:el' apen the lower face thereof; spaced frame plates disposed hetween the angle brackets and having abniinent along their upper edges with thelower 'nventioin what We to secure by Letters :face of the table; posts exencling through the frame plaies and terminally mounted in the angle brackets of each pair, to hold the: frame plates in abutment rwith the table; a driving shaft terminally jonrnaled for rotation in the loweiwportions of the frame plates, midway between the lateral edges thereof; an auxiliary shaft terminally jonrnaledi'or rouaion in the frame plates and vertically eline Willi the driving shaft; a pair of intermediate shafts, disposed in a common horizontal plane symmetrically with respect to ll'ie plane` of '.heauxiliary ano driving slias, and terminally gournaled for rotationin 'the frame rplates above 'the clrivT ing shaft; a pair of Winding shafts disposed is above he intermediate shafs i l l in a eoinnion horizontal plane synnneiril ly willi respect 1.o the plano of the auxiliary and the driving shafts; helical springs attached at their outer enls to the poss and. at their inner ends attached to the Winding` slia'fis; prime gear wheels jonrnaled Vl'or rotation 'upon the Winding" shafts and spaced peripheially ifroni llie lower face of ille lalfe: pawl raehe nieelninisnis assembled with Lilie prime gear Wheels and with ihe Winding shafts; pinions iixerl on the inierniecliae slialiis and meshing); with the prime gear Wheels; gear Wl fixed. on Jdie intermediate shafts; a pinion lixeil on *die auxiliary shaft anal meshingT with ihe gear Wheels of the interineflia'e shafts; a gear wheeliixeil Aon `the auxiliary shaA a pinion fixed on the iriving shfi'l. and n'ieshing `With the gear Wheel of 'the auxiliary shaft; the driving shaft being Jrerniinally extended beyond the frame plates; ya belt pulley fixed to the extended portion ol che driving' shaft.; an@ brake mechanism to engage Jthe driving shaft.
ln testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aflixed our siii-` natures in the presence of two witnesses.
