esmas.
To all 'whom it 'may concern: v
Beit known that we, GUsTAV G. GRAMM land AUGUsTUs F. Trinite, citizens of the United States, both residing at ll'orceste'r,
in the vcounty of `Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Brush, of which the following is a Specification.
` This invention relates to brushes, and par ployed for the huinan body. y
The principalobjects of the invention are to provide a --eonstruotion which will be entirely sanitary, which will have features 5 rendering the brush capable of being cleansed and disinfected' in 'a very simple and convenient manner; to provide a construction in which the holder for the bristles will have smooth surfaces and a minimum nuiuber of irregularities so that there no places where foreign matter can gather; to provide improved meansfor fastening the removable parts together; and other iin- ,roved features'of holder itself.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
`Reference is to be had to the accompanyinedrawings, in whiclilligure 1 is a side view of a tooth-brush shown'ig oneforin in which this invention may he carried out; Fig. 2 isla similar view showing the three detachable parts separated; l1ig. 3 is a plan of the bristle holder removed from the other elements; Fig. 4 is a plan of a hairebrush lpartly Abroken away to show the top of the bristle holder, and involving certain inodieations; Fig. 5 is a side view'tliereof showing the parts sepa- 0 rated.; is a side view of a shavingbrush partly in section showing another forni of the invention; and Fig. 7 of the bristle holder thereof.
Referring first to the .irst three figures, 5 the brush in this forni comprises it flat bristle holder l() consisting of a plate of a non-corrodible alloy which will not be attacked by any of the ordinary disinfeoting solutions adapted to be employed for clean- 0 ing the brush. This holder oriplate is provided vwith substantially uniform plane top and bottoni surfaces so that there will be no unnecessary protuberances or depressions on or lect. nthe top surface are a series of shalwhich are y eniwill be few or..
construction in the bristle silver so is a plan in which foreign inatter can collow grooves 11 adapted to receive the wirer or .other fastening material with which the*v bristles 12 -are` fastened 1n position. lnA
order to fasten the bristles these grooves are provided with small perforations 13 which are enlarged below tov receive the bristles7A the part of these perforations shown in'lligf 3 being smaller to receive the wire or other fastening ineans. It will beunderstood of course that these grooves can be filled over the fastening thread or wire with any V`inaterial which will protect the fasteningde-lvice and present a smooth upper surface,
but we prefer tonuse a wire which initselfy is not capable of being attacked by the anti?.
septic solutions. These' grooves are parallel' and longitudinal, and the 'fastening incluis preferably extends along thciu continuously? from one to the other in a well understood inanncr. 'Between these grooves are inter gralicontiiiuous walls 14 having surfacesflush with the top surface of the plato or holder, and providedwith perforations.-15` through which a liquidcan bey passed or. forced to insure the cleaning of the bristles and the surfaces belowwhieh collie between the bristles. Located at the end of the bristle holder is 'a projection 1G 'which is -shown in this instance` as screw-threadedand riveted by means of a rivet 17 to thev plate. This projection may he of Gcrnian as to resist the attacks ofliquid' disinfectants, and have strength enough to keep its threads intact-.in use. On the/bach of this bristle holder is located acapxor cover 20. This preferably is forinedof. a' sheet of German silver Aflat on the top to lit the top of the bristle holder and reinforce itj and bent down at the sides and ends so as to engage the sides and. ends of the bristle holder. lt may be held thereon 'by the rcsiliency of its sides and ends which preferably tit thc plate friction' light', but we profer to fasten it by means of a handle 2l. .For this puigpose the'cap or cover is pio vided with a slot 29. through which the projection 1G passes, and tho end of the handle .is provided with a scrcwthreadcd openiii'g 23 for receiving the projection. Around this opening is a shoulder 2l which, when the handle is screwed up on the projection, engages the end of the cap or cover on both sides ofthe slot and elanips it firinly to the end of the bristle holding plate.
ln the forni of the invention shown in Patented Sept. 28.1.9091.)
las
. threaded. The cap or cover 42 is provided i shown as fixed by a screw 45 to the German grooves 11 .are oblique elongated perfora- .more efficiently to permit the circulation of -the cap or cover 32 is formed substantially .This can be done without, interfering with infecting acids. The bristle holding plate Figs/: and 5.,/ the bristle-holding plate 30 1 is ofcsubstantially the same construction as that described except that between the tions l31 between the grooves. vThey serve liquid through the brush back. In this case like the cap or cover 20, except` that it is not provided withA a slot in the end, but is made integral 'with'th'e handle 33, both, f these parts preferably being formed f Gr'er-V man silver or some other sheet material. In this case` the cap or 4cover ils secured to the plate or holder 32 by a sufciently tight fit of its surrounding walls 34. In these two forms thebristle holder or plate extends to the back of the capor cover and fits snugi-y so as to leave no space in which dirt capi collect, thus making the brush thorouglislj sanitary and rigid.
In Figs. 6 and 7 the same principle is ap lied to a shavin brush. In ,this case thel bristle holder or p ate 40 is shown as formed according to the principles shown in Fig. 3,- but the projection 4l thereon is not screwwith an L-sha ed slot 43 fonreceiving'the projection eti for holding the parts in position, although it will be understood that the principles slfown in Fig;l 5 can be employed in this case. Here also the handle 445 isA ysilver cap 42, and as `being located on the baglriif it instead of at the;` side or endy as in the other forms illustrated.
The manner'of using the brush will be readily understood. The parts being assembled and the brush having been used, it is cleaned by separatingv the parts, placing the .bristle-holder in an antiseptic solution, bolllng itor treating it in any desired Way.
thefhandle or back, which would not be the case if these parts were fixed to the bristle holder, because usually they are made of material which is attacked by ordinary disis of a metallic 'alloy which is not attacked by such disinfectants', and whichA will stand boiling watere It will be understood from what` has beenA shown and described that this invention may be carried out in many "ways, and may be 'applied to various t pes of brushes;
While we have ilustrated and described certain forms of the invention and certain applications thereof, -we are aware, that many modicatons can be made therein -by any erson skilled in the art Without departing omy the scope of the invention as expressed iIi the wish to be limited to all the forms or details of construction shown, but
What we do claim isz- 1. `In a brush, the combination of a bristle holder having substantially uniform flat top andI bottom surfaces and having perforations theaethrough, and a fastenin means thereon, a removableca or cover or said holder,
device for securing it to said fastening means on the holder and for securing the cover thereon. W I Y 2. In a brush, the combination of a metallic non-corrodible bristle holder having a uniform lower surface, and provided with a screw threaded projection at one end, a uhollow metal cap or cover ada ted to cover the back and sides of said hol er,ha'ving a slot for receiving said projection, and a handle having a screw lthreaded socket for receiving said projection, and a shoulder around the end of the socket for engaging the end of the cover at the sides of said slot, whereby the cover will be clamped to the holder when the handle is screwed up.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands, in the presence of two 'subscribing witnesses. i
. Witnesses:
A. E. FAY, C. F.WEssoNL claims. Therefore, we do not i and a handle, said handle having a fastening 1
