Description

ZEGNIEKG-XE Q Application filed m,
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it. known that l, Um; l oou, a subjectv of the Emperor of China, temporarily residing and doing business in the borough tit ivlanhattan. in the State and city of N w York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in llroning'h iachincs, of which the following is a specification.
()ne spring of peculiarly simple form or:- erts the total pressure required. justing means are provided. Light. spiral springs easily manipulated allow the handling or removal of the bar. The table specially constructed for lightness and strength: the standard braced and the whole has less than the usual We' bulk, While carrying besides the ordinary an auxiliary table for the support at a. small distance from the main tableof a gas stove for heating the irohs and water for sprinkling.
The following is a description of What it consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
The accompanying drawings form a. of the specification.
Figure 1 1s a side elevation and Fig". 2 is part a corresponding View of a portion at right angles to the View n Fig. 1. section a portion ot the main table and the Fig. 3 shows in holding inc-ans therefor. it is ,on a larger scale. for clcarness, and shows the relative size of the bolt and the hole through which it passes.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures. A is the ironing: table. l have in my ex:- pe'riments made it from a plank of fine {II'tlil'lQtl wood about 32% in. long. ii in. wide and Q in. thick, hut tl PSC- proportions may be varied. (in the upper taco ll operate by a l and saw or other suitable means to produce a hollow 11.. This table is supported on and a cross piece A. and accompanied at. a little distance alongside by a side table A, which may he termed an auxiliary talilc supported firmly by the same legs.
A is a stout u 'irig'ht tuhv which l term the standard and which i support by fixed braces, A engaged with a collar A". secured to the standard by a pinching screw A.
The standard. carries a bracket B, secured by a, pinching screw B. he bracket may he adjusted by slackening the srrcw B and also by shortening and lengthening an inclined brace G, screw-threaded and carrying a Simple ad Specification of Letters Eat ant. yg f m 'fiipg'i e great. corret'tion ehouid a... ates, 13'.
'SEi'XNE.
thumb nut C; The trceend of this bracket carries a spring in the form of a partiaily flattened loop l3. secured under the bracket ii by rivets and i vine its cut-open lower side secured to :1 Noel; 1). below. face of this block has a semi spherical, smoothiy hottoined recess c which serves as a' socket For the hali andsochet; joint at. the upper end of the pr-osser-rod (if The slight weight of the presser rod is carriid when not in use. by springs ll H, which mime-3t hlecii E with hooks i on the prcsserrod, as shown. The lower end of this ro'tl carries a pin it", confined adjustahl or a screw G.
I have in my experiments used form of iron M which has long been used in ironing: machines. smoothly bored socket. m in the "per face of the irit: receives the correspondingly rounded end of the pint}:- and ti -smits its to the workii'ig face of the iron, which is moved over the l y reason of the simplicity of nae ations may be conducted machine; its
tily, and the resnit is ermtiilii02fi over the Whole 1; because the cavity is swept by a proper finishing tooi exactly concentric to the deli and socket joint. We? at the top of the presser-rod. it it. shall he desired to increase the pr me on the iron the tlilifil'ldillli; simply gii is a partialturn to the thinnh r (3 if the pressu is too he made by turning ares t in the reversedire too.
up the machine, there is hahie to round at one greater 1" end of the shallow rece other. Zo remed'v this. hrt't, the taliie A to the right or it This may he done with ninety by the bolts A iarger than bodies or the bolts, and siachening nuts below, moving the table to the shoal? extent required and retigl'itening iiestenings.
A is a t ansversciy in. the free end of the table A and equipped with washers or cienchqings sunk into the edges of the and on i the of the rod are j riveted '7 Oil'ViG'lZS effect shortening thr $55 when the riveting is increased. i seasoned Wood for the tahle A and this slender trs-nsverse real. or stow wire, insures which receive parting from the principle or against cracking or Warping and produces a table likely to endure indefinitely all the strains and temperatures to which it is exposed.
In operating, a shirt is slipped upon the table A so as to bring the bosom over the shallow and smoothly curved recess a. The iron M, of the proper temperature, is brought into position. The presser bar which has been held out of use on a pin A is liberated and inserted in the back of the iron. Thenceforward the operation proceeds in the ordinary manner and with the ordinary skill of the operator, with the assurance that the pressure is uniform and the .action in all respects satisfactory over the whole of the area of the cavity a, or so much. of that cavity as is covered by the bosom. When sutliciently treated, it is Withdrawn, the iron disengaged, the shirt being rapidly taken off and another supplied. The same iron or another one freshly heated is brought into position and the work proceeds.
li'lodifications may be made without desacrificing the advantages of the invention. The collar A may be riveted or otherwise permanently setv in a fixed position on the stem, but I prefer it equipped as shown, for the reason, among others, that it allows the braces A. to be adjusted to receive always their proper share of the strain without requiring any great nicety in the construction of the machine. Parts may be added or omitted. In most cases the machine will serve well with only one of the braces.
I attach importance .to the construction and mounting of the spring D because it is simple and durable and serves-not only for pressing downward with any required degree of force, but also for receiving and resisting the lateral force when in ironing at points distant from. the center of the recess a the rod G is at an angle.
I attach importance to the hollow a of the upper face of the table and to the direction of the axis of the hollowing. It is transverse to the bracket B.
I claim as my invention 1. In an ironing machine, the combination with an ironing table, of a plurality of convergently disposed braces rising therefrom, acollar connected to the convergent ends of the braces, a standard carrying such collar, means for securing thecollar on the standmeans for fixing ard, an outstanding supporting arm slidable upon the upper portion of the standard, the arm against sliding movement and in ditl'erent positions on said standard, a brace connected to the collar and. slid-ably engaged with the arni,'a pressurevarying device engaging the brace and arm,
and a yielding presscr device hung from the arm and having iron-engaging means at its lower end. I
2. In an ironing machine, the combination with an ironing table, of aplurality of convergently disposed braces rising therefrom, a'collar connected to the convergent ends of the braces, a standard carrying such collar,
means for securing the collar on the stand ard, an outstanding supporting arm slidable upon the upper portion of the standard,
means for fixing the arm against sliding" movement andin ditterent positionson sai standard, a brace connected to the collar and adjnstablyengaged with the arm, a press'urevarying device engaging the brace and arm, and a yielding presser device under the arm and having iron-engaging'means at its lower end, and an ironing table under the latter having a concavity with the axis of its curvature transverse thereto.
In an ironing machine, the combination with an ironing table, of a plurality of con vergeirtly disposed braces rising therefrom a collar connected to the convergent ends 0% the braces, a standard carrying such collar, means for securing the collar on the standard, an outstanding supporting arm slidable portion of the standard, the arm against sliding upon the upper means for fixing movement and in different positions on said Y standard, a brace connected to the collar and slidably engaged with the arm, a pressurevarying device engaging the brace and arm, and a yielding presser device extending down from the arm and having iron-enga ing meansat its lower end, an ironing tab e under the latter having a concavity with the axis of its curvature transverse to the length thereof, andan auxiliary table A arran ed to support the part of the garment not'being' treated.
