Speci'cation of Letters Patent;
Patented Sept. 2t .t 909.
Application led June 2, 1909. Serial No. 499,803.
'State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cycle; and I do hereby declare the following 'to be 'a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art `to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
This invention pertains to cycles, especially a tricycle of such a design as to afford the appearance of a horse, the head of which is capable of being turned ineither direction, as the steering wheel of the device is oscillated.
lThe invention has for its rimary object the provision 'of means for ormlng a suitable connection between the neck of the horse and the body thereof, whereby the neck and head are movable with the steering wheel. Y
A further object of the invention is to' provide means for allowing the steering wheel, the neck and the head to oscillate smoothly.
Another object of the invention is to afford means to allow the disconnection of the neck from the body, in order to remove the steering wheel and the handle bars.
This invention comprises further objects and combinations of elements which will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in objects of this device or apparatus, may be changed and varied, that is to sa in an actual reduction to practice, the un erstanding, however, is that the changes and variations accruing from said reduction to practice are comprehended by the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tricycle embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the neck and the body disconnected, in order to further illustrate the structural details of this connection.
In regard to the annexed illustrations, 1 designates the body of that portion of the trcycle which is zdesigned to represent a horse, while 2 denotes the neck and the head,v
vwhich isvftted to the connectin thereof. The rear legs of the body afford suitable bearings 4, for the axle 5, upon which the rear wheels (3 of the -tricycle are journaled. 'Carried by and rotatable with 'the axle 5 isa sprocket 7, about which the usual sprocket chain 8 travels. This sprocket chain 8 also travels about the sprocket wheel 9, which is journaled -upon and rotatable with the sh-aft 1'0. This shaft'l() is mounted i'n suitable bearings 11, of two downwardly extending prjections or lugs 12 of the body 'ofthc'dev-ice. The shaft l0 is provided with the usual cranks 1'3 'having the usual pedals 14, whereby motion may be transmitted to the sprocket wheel 9, and thence to the rear lWheels of the "device The device is provided with the usual front forks 15, between which the steering wheel thereof 1s positioned. This steering wheel is journaled upon and rotatable with the shaft or axle 16, mounted in bearings 17 ot' the forks. The front forks are provided with an inwardly extending portion 18 having a rectangular portion 19, designed to be received by a rectangular shaped socket 20 of the rod 21, of the handle bars of the device, that is to say, when the same are assembled. Extending transversely through the rectangular shaped portion 19 and the socket portion of the rod 20 is a pin 22, in order to prevent disengagement of the said members 21 and 18.
An angular shield or plate 23 is afforded, end of the body, as shown, and is secure thereto by suitable screws or bolts 24. vThe members 18 and 21 extend through thelateral portions 25 of the shield, as illustrated in the sectional view of the device. In order to obtain access to the said pin 22, the shield is first removed. The lower lateral portion 25 is rovided with a .raceway 26, between which and the raceway 27 of the plate 28 ball bearings 29 are provided, in order to afford a smooth oscillating movement for the steering wheel. -The neck 2 is provided with plates 3() and 31, through the apertures 32 of which, 'the members 18 and 21 extend. The aperture of the upper plate 30'is rectangular in contour, in order to fit the rectana suitable seat 34, upon which the operator sits, in order to roperly manipulate the cranks of the devlce, thereby transmitting motion to the rear wheels. f
From .the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device, together with the simplicity. thereof, will be clearly apparent.
Havino' thus fully described the invention;l what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a tricycle of the design set forth, a body having a movable neck, rear wheels and a forward steering wheel, forks for the steering wheel having 'an upwardly extending portion, handle bars having a down' wardly extending rod fitting said upwardly extending portion and provlded with a rectangular portion, said neck having a plate provided with a rectangular aperture en` gageable by said rectangular portion, whereby the steering wheel and the neck are oscil-` lated together.
2. In a tricycle of the design set forth, a. body having a movable neck and providedA -with rear wheels and a forward steering wheel, forks for the steering wheel having an upwardly extending portion having a rection andthe rectangular enlargement for` holding them together, a shield for the downwardly extending rod and the upwardly extending portion, said neck having plates carried thereby provided with apertures to be received by the-downwardly extending rod and the lsaidupwardly `extending portion, the aperture of one of the plates bemg rectangular, said downwardly extending ripd'having a rectangular enlargement to t t e neck to turn with the steering wheel, as and for the purpose specified. f'
In testimony whereof I have Signed my name to this'specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. l
