WIT/1158858 'onrrnn srrns aanr onrrcn FREDERICK C. KENGETER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SLEIGF-RUNNER ATTACHMENT FOR BABY-CARRIAGES.
Application filed January 27, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. KnNcnrun, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sleigh-Runner Attachment for Baby-Carriages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sleigh runners for folding go-carts, baby carriages etc.
One object of the invention is to provide a sleigh runner which is readily adjustable to and detachable from folding go-carts, baby carriages, ohildrens wagons and the like.
A. further object is to provide such a runner which may be formed of structural shapes of steel, whereby the runner may be strong, yet light, and cheap to manufacture.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a convenient form of folding go-cart, with the runner attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a runner adapted to be secured to a cart in which the wheels are of the same size; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a runner adapted for a cart in which the wheels are of different sizes; and Fig. 4 is a detail view, partly in section and on an enlarged scale, of a clamp secured to the runner and retaining a solid axle thereon.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the runner comprises a bottom member 1 which is curved upwardly at each end and spanned by a top member 2. The ends of the top and bottom members are connected and secured in position by means of gusset plates 3 and 4. The top and bottom members may be formed of T-iron, and the gusset plates 3 and 4 riveted to the webs of said top and bottom members. Said gusset plates may be provided with holes 5 through which a rope may be passed, in order that the runner may be drawn as in an ordinary sleigh.
In Fig. 3, the top member 6 has an offset portion 7, whereby the runner is adapted to be utilized with carriages or carts in which Specification of Letters Patent. Patented. Sept. 21, 1999.
Serial No. 474,480.
the front and rear wheels are of differentdiameters. The extent of the offset may be varied to suit the particular style of carriage to which the runner is to be applied. Slidably mounted upon the top member of l the runner are saddles 10, having a fiat seat 12, and depending sides 14 and 15, which are spaced apart a sufficient distance to receive the top part or flange 16 of the T-iron forming the top member of the runner. Said sides 14 and 1.5 may be formed with inclined portions 18 and 19, and depending parallel portions 20 and 21. The saddle 10 may be clamped in position on the T-iron by means of a bolt 22, passing through the lower portion of the sides of the saddle and provided with a nut 24, whereby the degree of tightness with which the saddle is retained on the top member of the runner may be varied. A clamping-plate 28 is arranged to overlie the flat seat 12, and is provided with laterallyextending' cars 29 and 30. Bolts 31 and 32 having fiat heads 34, pass through the fiat seat 12 and the ears 29 and 30, and are provided with thumb-nuts 36 at their upper ends, whereby the clamping plate 28 may be held in position. The heads 34 may be formed square and fiat to lie between the under side of the seat 12 and the upper surface of the T-iron forming the top of the runner.
When it is desired to attach the runner to a folding go-cart, a sleeve or tube 38 is clamped in position upon the saddle by means of the clamping plate. The sleeve 38 is of sufficient length to span the lower end of a yoke 40, which supports a wheel of the go-cart, shown in Fig. 1. The pin 42 which normally retains the wheel in position on the go-cart, is passed through the sleeve 38 and through the yoke 40, thereby retaining said yoke in position on the saddle which is supported upon the top member of the runner. hen it is desired to apply the runner to a baby carriage or childrens cart having solid axles, the tube 38 is dispensed with v and the axle 45 clamped in position upon the saddle, as shown in Fig. 4.
Both ends of the bottom member of the runner are curved upwardly in order to enable the runner to be tilted when the conveyance is to be moved from a roadway to a sidewalk over a curb-stone, or when the conveyance is to be lowered and the tilting of 1 ends rounded, but the particular form of curvature employed by me performs a function not possible in the ordinary runner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A sleigh runner having a tread and a substantially horizontal bar rigid therewith, said bar having a horizontal flange, a saddle mounted to slide on said flange and having depending side members, means for drawing said side members together so as to clamp the side edges of said flange, and clamping means mounted on said saddle for securing the saddle to a frame thereabove.
2. The combination of a sleigh runner, a pair of saddles slidably mounted on said runner, a clamping plate mounted on each saddle, and a sleeve held on each saddle by said clamping plates.
3. The combination of a sleigh runner formed of T-iron presenting a horizontal flange, a saddle slidably mounted on the top of said runner, said saddle being formed of a flat bar bent so as to present a flat seat and depending sides, said sides being formed with intermediate downwardly converging portions, and clamping means cooperating with said sides to draw the same together below said T-iron.
4. The combination with a sleigh runner, a saddle slidably mounted on the top of said runner, said saddle comprising a flat seat and depending sides, said sides being formed with intermediate inclined portions, and a bolt passing through said sides, whereby the latter may be clamped against the side edges of said runner.
5. The combination with a sleigh runner formed of T-iron, of a saddle having a seat and depending sides, said sides being formed with intermediate inclined port-ions, clamping means passing through said sides, a clamping plate overlying said seat, a pair of bolts passing through said seat and clamping plate, and means on said bolts engaging the upper side of said clamping plate.
6. The combination with a sleigh runner formed of T-iron, of a saddle having a seat and depending sides, said sides being formed ith intermediate inclined portions, clamping means passing through said sides, a'
clamping plate overlying said seat, a sleeve between said clamping plate and seat, a pan of bolts passing through said clamping plate, and means on said bolts engaging the upper side of said. clamping plate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK C. KENGETER.
