(X. {till iunlm'tlinivnt of the invention are illnnti'ato l in the tltV'Oll'k panying drawings, wherein Figure l is a longitudinal Stt'l' lOll through a fire-box provided with the improved batllo Wall,

Figure 4; is an enlarged half section on tho line 1VIV of Figure 1, looking in the (1i motion of tho arrow, and
Figure 5 in an Plltl "View showing a slightly modified form of brick in position upon tho supporting tubes.
In tho construction of locomotive ballio Walls heretofore, it has been common either to use very long fire-brick extending arross a number of these supporting tubes, or else use a plurality of separate bricks which were placed entirely above the tubes and were mutually dependent upon oavh other for Support, against. lateral tlisplaoeinont, and in soinucasss were dependent upon 0::(lk nther for support against \Pi'lf al (llfrlirltlt'ttmerit. As illustiatedin Fig. lg-the supporting; tubes '3 are fpreferably made parallel, so that bricks o uniform length may be used from one end of the furnace to the other. As it would be practically impossibleto make the tubes 3 parallel from end to end becauseofinterference with the staybolts in the ends of the fire-box, the pre- 10'.ferred method of construction will be to inake only those portions ,ef the tubes 3 "arallel which lsupport the fire brick, Ee'ndingthe other ends of the tubes 3 lat-- erally as much as is necessary to clear the 1L5 stay -boltsxir the front end of the firebox.
It'will be seen from the foregoing that .all th'ejbricks' composing the battle wallare seituredag ainst lateral displacement independent of each. other, thatthese bricks are of such small size thati'they may be easily handled, andlthat the-construction of the ends ofthe bricks prevent fusing together, so that jtlie'fbricks maybe easily removed when necessary.
Another advantage of the construction re- I sides mfthe fact: that the bricks serve to 'cethe tubes themselves and prevent their ateial' movement. The tubes by reason of the-bricks fitting between them, not only renforce each other, but are also braced from he sideplate's of the fire box by the outside ybricks'f). I
' 'A slightly -difierent form of brick L is ustrated in Figure 5. This style of brick ,-'Bf'5 fiias its endswhich fit the tubes cut away'in a slightly different manner, the construction an other respects being substantially that illustrated in the arrangement heretofore :,described It will. be obvious that the ends 5:0;of'the'br1cks might? be cut away in a number. -.o'f dliferent waysall coming within the scope J of theinvent-ion, it only being necessary that the corner be so constructed that the bricks can fit down between two adjacent tubes in 4 such a manner thatlateral displacement of the brick is guardediiagainst.
g. t;-Having thus described our invention and illustrated its use, what we claim as new and :desire ,to secure by Letters Patent is the followin Y -fimomotive fire-box comprising in combination, side plates, longitudinally extending forwardly and downwardly inclined ation tubes between the side plates,
' circul of bricks upon the tubes-socketed at ,thei lower side' edges so that their lower portions fit down'between the tubes, and a row go'f bricks extending from each .of the outside-tubes, to the adjacent side plate,
69 siich-bricks being socketed at their lower inside/"edges to engage the tubes at their upper Witnesses and outer side portions and being upwardly inclined from their inner to their outer s des 'with their outer edges resting against the side plates.
2. A locomotive fire-box comprising in combination, side plates, longitudinally extending forwardly and downwardly inclined circulation tubes between the side plate, rows of bricks supported upon'the tubes, and a 70 row of bricks extending from each of the outside tubes to the adjacent side plate, such bricks beingv socketed at their lower inside edges to engage the tubes at their upper and outer side portions and being upwardly inclined from their inner to their outer sides with their outer edges resting against th side plates.
" A locomotive fire-box comprising in combination, side plates inclined toward each other, longitudinally extending forwardly and downwardly inclined circulation tubes between the side plates with their brick supporting portions in substantial parallelism with the vertical central plane of the {35 fire-box, rows of bricks upon the tubes socketed at their lower side edges so that their lower edges fit down between the tubes, and a row of bricks of uniform width extending from each of the outside tubes to the adja- '90 cent side plate, such bricks being socketed at their lower inside edges to engage the tubes at their upper and outer side portions and being upwardly inclined from their inner to their outer sides with their outer edges resting against the side plates. r
4. A locomotive fire-box comprising in combination, side plates, longitudinally eX-. tending forwardly and downwardly inclined circulation tubes between the side plates, rows of bricks upon the tubes socketed at their lower side edges so that their lower 'p'ortions'fit down between the tubes, with their side edges above the tubes spaced apart to prevent their fusing together, and a row of bricks extending from each of the outside tubes to the'adjacent side plate, such bricks being socketed at their lower inside edges to engage the tubes at'their upper and outer side portions and being upwardly inclined I from their'inner to their outer sides with their outer edges resting against the side plates' In testimony whereof we have hereunto signed our names in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses. i
