Description

O. ANSGHITTZ;
noon CHECK AND CLOSER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 26 Patented Sept. 14, 1909.

OSKAR ANStlHfiTZ, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
DOOR CH' CK AND CLOSER.
a lication filed Mat 26,
To whom it 'ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, Osimn Anscntirz, merchant, a subject of the German Emperor residing at 11 5 Schanzenstrasse, Hamburg, Germany, have invented certain n'iv and useful Improvements in Door Checks and Chasers, of which the'following is a specifi-.
cation. The invention relates to liquid door checloi and closers, and the object of the inventior l is to provide novel means whereby the beginning, middle and end speed of the door can be regulated according to requirements.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as is hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
in the drawing the object of the invention is shown by way of example.
' Figure 1 shows the door cioser in vertical section, the door being supposed to be closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken on him iiB of Fig. 1'. Figs. 3 and 4 show the door-- closer in partial section when the door is in motion. Fig. is a vertical section-of the brake piston taken on line CD of Fig. 1.
Fig. (3 is a vertical section, on an enlarged scale through the piston and part of the cars ing, showing the opening in the piston for the passage of the fluid and the ball for controlling said opening. I
The casing a of the door-closer is of the usual shape, the upper part of which serves to receive the spiral spring I) and the spindle c with crank plate cl. The crank pin e of the crank plate passes through a hole in the connecting rod 7 the other end of which is connected in the usual way by the pin g to the piston h which moves in the piston cylinder 1n the lower part of the casing.
The spindle 0 with the crank plate d is mounted in a special box 2' which is screwed fast into the casing a and made tight by means of a shoulder or collar 2' The upper part of this box 2' carries a stuffing-box k.
Above the piston 71. is rovided in the casing aa channel Z which orms a communicationbetween the spaces in front of and be-- hind the piston h At one end of the lower part of the casing'a are two valve spindles m and 0 which stand exactly over the holes or ports m? and 0 which connect the channel Z with the piston cylinder. The positions of the holes at and 0 are such that the hole m as shown in Fig. 1 (when the door is completely closed) lies exactly over the hole 9 Specificatihn of Letters Patent.

of the piston hwhich is not completely tilled by the pin y, while the hole of opens into the space 1) at the end of the cylinder when the piston la is at its dead point. The piston h also has a hole g which c nneots the space p with the hole g 1 -'lhe action of the do rcloser is as folis moved by means of tl rotary movement :of the crank plate d, (wh ch is turned lo the leftby means of the usuallever. arm on the free end of the spindle 0 (not shown in the drawing) and the spiral spring I) is thereby wound up.
For the purpose of an easy transfer of the fluid from the left hand side of the cylinder to the right hand side thereof when the door is opened, the piston IL is furnished with a communicating hole 1 in which works a ball a which allows the passage of fluid when the piston. is moved toward the left but prevents such passage when the piston moves to the right.
When the door is released the crank plate d is turned by the spiral spring 6 in the op posits direction whereby the piston 1 is forced to the right. Hereupon the ball 8' efiects the closing of the communicating hole r in the piston h so that the fluid is forced through the two holes m and 0 into the channel Z and so passes to the left hand side of the cylinder. The piston moves gradually farther toward the right until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 45 wherein the hole m is closed by the piston h, and the fluid can only escape and pass around to the other end of the cylinder by means of the hole 0 'Afterthe piston li has closed the hole at the door must naturally move slower than before the closing of the said hole m The piston h is now pressed farther to the right,
piston h coincides with the hole m the fluid escapes through the hole 9 in the piston h and the hole m into the return channel 1 so that the movement of the door is somewhat accelerated in consequence of the reduced resistance in the cylinder.
T According to the adjustment of thevalves of the door can be regulated and at the end of its movement may be closed more or less sharply according to re uirements;
The arrangement of t e box 2' screwed into the casing a-has theladvantage'that its cylindrical inner surface canbe brought com-.
lows :W hen the door is pened the piston h I m and 0 the beginning, middle and end speed and at the moment when the hole in the a ininnhle in on we re the crank plate 142m nulotl an t o v .ig a direct as the cylin- .5 dricnl' hollow space to reoeivo the crank plate partly ln'olien into l tho cylinder. The crank phiie (Z is incloseil by the i'ovess in the box 2' i also on its periphery whereby not only is an inm'ensed bearing surface obtained to resist lhe one sided pressure due to the action of the piston I, mid wear and tear thereby rei'luc ed to a minimum, but also the bending of lhe spindle I: andv lie consequent leakage 2d the sluliingdvox is prevented. I
Having now particularly described and asom'l'ziined the nature of this invention and in what manner the some is to he performed l dwhire that what I claim is:----
i. A door check and closer, comprising a 'ensingmlnpted to contain liquid and having :1 piston rylinder, a piston movable in said cylinder, the said piston having a passage extending from the end thereof and opening at the periphery of the piston, the casing having a return channel leading from the closed end of the cylinder to the other end thereof, the end portion of the cylinder belug connected by spaced ports with said re turn channel, and valves controlling said bot-n on its upper surface and ports, the opening in the periphery ofthe piston being adapted to register with one of said ports for the purpose set forth.
2. .In a door check and closer, the combination with a casing ode ted to contain liquid and having a cylindrlcal istonchamher closed at the front end and open at the rear end,-the'piston chamber havingie port ad'jncentto the front end thereof an a ort at the rear of the first port the casing aving a passage connecting said ports with the rear end of the piston chamber, of a piston movable in the said piston chamber and adapted to open and close the said rear port,
ond a rotatable spindle having acrank'disk connected with the piston, the said piston having a valve controlled passage extending through the some, the piston also having a passage extending from the front end thereof and opening at the periphery of the piston, the said passage bein adapted to i'egistor with the rear port of tie piston chamber,
and for the purpose set forth. In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have presence of two subscribing witnesses.
