IMPROVEMBN'I' m SEWING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. H. O0BBs',of Montgomery,- in the county of Montgomery, and State of Alabama, have invented a newand useful Improvement in Sewing Machines; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is 'a full, clear, and xactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, .reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is toprovide improvements in the construction of the Grover and Baker sewing-machine, whereby the lost motion due :to the wear of the crank-connection with the needle-arm, also the lost motion of the operating-device for the vertical shaft of the curved needle may be avoided.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improvement,
which consistsof an adjusting-attachment to the needle-arm, which latter, together with the table and spiral post of the curved needle, are shown in red outline.
Figure 2 represents'a plan view of the same. 7 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
crank-pin A works in a slot in the end of that .part of the needle-arm B which is under the table, and the oscillating motion of the spiral post 0, which carries the curved needle, is also imparted by thewalls of a vertical slot in an extension of the needlearm. The walls of theseslots, andalso the crank-pins and spiral shafts, wear away'from long use, and become so loose as to work badly.
To remedy this, I propose tointroduce adjustable plates, D DTilTUhBfSlOflblf the crank-pin, and the adjustable plates E E in the extension, for operating the spiral shaft.
To operatethesaid adjustable plates D D, I provide the screws F G, and jam-nuts H. The screws F pass loosely through the wall, I, of the slot, and the erating the post 0, but Iprefer to dispense with the rigid walls of the slot, and employ the adjustable plates E E, arranged to work laterally in grooves, M, so that when adjusted closely to the post, they will be self-adjusting as a whole relatively to' the extension L, wherein they are supported, and thereby avoid lateral strain, which would occur if the shaft were slightlyout of the vertical line, or if it be not exactly in the centre of the slot.
These plates are adjusted to or fromv each other by the screws N and jam nuts O, the said screws'passing loosely through the plates E, and screwing into the plates E.
Having thus described my invention,
1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l v The combination, with the needle-arm B and crankpin A, oroscillating needle-post G, of the plates D and D, or E and E, and their adj HStlHg-SCIGWS and nuts, substantially as described.-
L. H. OOBBS.
