Be it known that I, BIRD M. SYIHER, a
residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electromagnetic Separators for Grain-Chutes, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionrelates to an electromagnetic separator for grain chutes and has for its object to provide an eflicient separator of the kind, having strong magnetic attraction to thoroughly separate from grain passing through a chute any magnetic particles or substances that are mingled'with the grain.
A further object is toprovide a separator of the kind, with means to automatically remove from the electromagnet and from the chute of the separator the substances that are attracted to the magnet.
I accomplish these objects by the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal, vertical section of a broken away portion of a grain chute,
having" attached thereto a separator constructed in accordance with my invention and shown in side elevation partly in sections. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section of the same, showing the top plan view of my separator, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the electromagnet of my separator detached from the chute, and partly broken away at one side and core and windings. y
In the drawings 1 designates a grain chute having attached thereto a separator constructed in accordance with my invention and comprising an electromagnet 2, connected by the conductors 3 and 4 with a dynamo, (not shown), and a wiper 5 for the magnet 2, a wheel 6 adapted to reciprocate the wiper,
' a worm wheel 7 adapted to revolve the wheel 6, and a pulley 8, mounted on a shaft 9, having a worm 1O engaging the worm wheel 7, and adapted. to revolve the worm wheel. The electromagnet 2 comprises the rectangular soft iron plate core 11 projecting centrally and longitudinally from the base 12 of a rectangular channel shaped soft iron body 13, having the sides 14 projecting from the base 12 parallel with the core 11, the insulated winding 15 around the core 11, the top plate of compressed fiber 16, around the core flush with the outer free end of the core and the end to show the inner" outer edges of the sides 1 1 of body 13, and the fiber plates 17, flush with the ends of the base 12 and the sides 13. Preferably the space betwe'en'the side 14:, the base 12, the end plates 17, and the top plate 16, and the winding 15 of the core is filled with parafiin. The sides 14 are provided with the insulating fiber plates 18, to which are secured the binding posts 19 whichare connected to t-he winding 15, and by the conductors 3 and 4: to the. dynamo, (not shown). The electromagnet thus constructed is fitted into a suitable opening in the bottom of the chute 1 with the top face flush with the inner face of the bottom. v
The wiper 5 is mounted on a stud pin 20, projecting from the bottom of the chute 1, with one arm 21 projecting over the top side of the wheel 6. The arm 21 is provided with a slot 22 through which projects a crank pin 23 of the wheel 6. The opposite arm 24: of the wiper extends downward of the chute 1, and is provided at its outer end with a wiper plate 25 of non-magnetic material, which extends over and is adapted to engage the top face of the electromagnet.
The wheel 6 is fixedly mounted on the axle 26 which extends downward through the bottom of the chute 1, and through a bearing 27 secured to the outer face of the bot tom, and upon a projecting end portion of the axle abutting the bearing is fixedly mounted the worm wheel 7. T o the bottom of the chute 1 are also secured the bracket bearings 28 in which is journaled the shaft 9 of the worm 10, with the worm intermeshing with the worm wheel 7.
To the sides of the chute 1, opposite the top edges of the ends of the electromagnet 2, are provided openings which are closed by the doors 29 hinged at the lower ends of the openings, and the doors 29 are normally held closed'by the springs 30, each secured at one end to a side of the chute, and extending alon a door. Above the doors the sides of the e utc 1 are provided on their inner faces with the deflecting plates 31, adapted to defleet the grain passing through the chute next the sides while passing the doors.
Thus constructed, connected and attached as described to a grain chute, the operation substances mingled with the grain, and carried thereby through and along the chute,
thereby separating them from the grain. If
these particles were left to accumulate on the magnet,they would inv time produce an obstruction in the path of the grain, (and the outer particles of the accumulation belng more weakly held by the magnet than those contacting directly therewith, would'be liable to be detached therefrom by the grain in passing over the magnet." To obviate this I have provided thewiper 5, the lower and longer arm 24 of which is slowly reciprocated from side to side of the chute-by the action 'of the crank pin of the Wheel 6 engaging the shorter arm, thereby movingthe wiper plate which is in engagement with the upper face ofthe magnet, slowly back and- 'as described, I provide a degree of magnetopenings, an electroma ism that is not possible to attain with the permanent magnets usually employed for the purpose, and thereby produce a more thorough separation of magnetic substances from the grain, and by combining with the electromagnet the means described for continuously removing the magnetic aceumulations 'from the magnet and the chute. I have provided for the full effective action of the magnet at all times, and against detachment of the outer portions of excessive accumulations on the magnet, that through the weakness of the magnetic attraction on such outer portions are liable to be detached therefrom by the grainpassing over itand again mingled therewit What I claim to be new is' 1. 2. In an electromagnetic separator for grain, the combination of a chute having a bottom, and sides provided with opposite openings, and with downwardly converging deflector plates contacting the channel of the chute above the openings, an electromagnet having poles flush with and transverse the inner face of the bottom. between the side openings, outwardly opening and automatically closing doors forthe openings, means to remove magnetic accumulations from the poles of the magnet comprising a arm provided with a non-magnetic wiper.
