JAMES B. PATTERSON, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAMMOCK-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909.
Application filed February 5, 1909. Serial No. 476,311.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES B. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hammock- Stand, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of thepresent invention is to provide a compact, comparatively inexpensive, light, safe and attractive stand for hammocks, couches and the like which can be readily adjusted in use and which, when not in use, can be folded into a small compass.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof but first described in connection with the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1, is a perspective view showing a stand embodying features of the invention. Fig. 2,is an elevational view, partly in section, drawn to an enlarged scale and illustrating features of the invention. Fig. 3, is a sec tional view taken on the line 3-3, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4, is a perspective view drawn to an enlarged scale and showing a toothed member detached.
There is a cruciform base consisting of a strip 1, having at its ends cross pieces 2. These parts may and preferably are made of wood. Both ends of the stand are alike so that only one end will be described.
3, is a standard having at its lower end a crosswise ranging shaft or pole 4. The standard and the part 4, may and preferably are made of wood.
a"), are stays connected with the standard 3, and with the respective ends of the pole 4.
At the upper end the standard 3, is provided with means 6, from which a hammock or couch 7, may be suspended.
S, are keepers provided with openings for the reception of the heads of the pole 4, in such a way thata pivot is formed. These keepers are attached to the ends of the cross pieces 9, is a support consisting of an upright plate or casting and it is secured to the strip 1, and it is arranged so as to extend upward near to or alongside of the standard 3. This support 9, has an opening through it for the passage of the shaft or rod 4, and it is also provided with a segmental opening 10. The face of the support adjacent to the opening 10, and on the side of the support opposite the standard 3, is roughened as atll. There is a bolt 12, which works in the slot 10, and penetrates the standard 3. Between the head of this bolt and the roughened surface 11, is interposed a toothed member 13. 14, is a hand nut which engages the screwed end of the bolt and serves to bind and release the standard in respect to the support. The roughened surface and toothed member serve to prevent accidental slipping of these parts.
By simply manipulating the part 14, it is possible to adjust the standard 3, into any position desired with respect to the base, thus the stand can be adjusted to hammocks or couches of different kinds and also adjusted to support a hammock or couch in any required position. The bolt 12, may be removed and when this is done the standards can be folded down onto the base, thus bringing the stand as a. whole into a small compass.
Vhat I claim is:
1. In a hammock stand the combination of a cruciform base, a standard having at one of its ends a crosswise ranging shaft or rod pivoted to the arm of said base, a support secured to and rising from the body of the base alongside of said standard and having an opening for the passage of the shaft and a segmental opening bounded by a roughened surface, and a binding clamp carried by the standard and extending through the segmental opening and fitted with a toothed portion cooperating with said roughened surface for adjustably clamping and unclamping the standard and support, substan tially as described.
2. A hammock stand comprising the combination of a cruciform base having a standard pivoted thereto, a support rising from the base alongside of the standard and provided with a segmental opening, and a clamping bolt carried by the standard and arranged in said segmental opening and adapted to clamp and unclamp the support and standard, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
JAMES B. PATTERSON.
