LOCK AND KEY FOR THE SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 6, 1908.
Patented Sept. *7, 1909.
Serial No. 409,429.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH GOGMIN, a subject of the Imperial Czar of Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks and Keys for the Same, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a lock and a key for the same, particularly ward locks having a tumbler.
The invention aims to provide an adjustable primary ward and a key with bit which carries a corresponding adjustable element.
The invention further aims to construct a lock in which the locking-bolt carries an adjustable thrust-blade.
An important feature of my improvement is a keyhole protector and a lock and key for the same.
With these and other aims in view, the invention consists in the novel features and in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a detail view of the parts of the lock assembled. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the key for the lock. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the key to unlock the keyhole protector. Fig. 5 is a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the keyhole protector. Fig. 7 is an elevation of the pin to hold the lock for keyhole protector in unlocked position. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the tumbler. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the primary ward and the form to which it is secured. Fig. 10 is a detail view showing the adjustable means for attaching the thrust-blade to the locking-bolt. Fig. 11 is a top plan View with parts of the outside plate broken away. Fig. 12 is a section on line 12 12 of Fig. 11. Fig. 13 is a section on line 13 13 of Fig. 11.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals, 13 denotes the locking-bolt with tumbler 14, pivoted at 15, and having detent 18, for engagement with notches 16 and 17 of the bolt, which carries adjustable thrustblade 19. The spring-blade 2O urges the bolt outward, and the spring-blade 21 urges the tumbler forward. The thrust-blade has a comparatively large notch 22 to accommodate the adjustable element 52 of the key. The screws 23 and 24 in the slotted projections on the bolt permit variant adjustment of thethrust-blade, which may be adjusted with reference to the primary ward 25, which is also slidably mounted and on the form 26 for its support. The locking-blade 27 for the keyhole protector is urged forward to locked position by spring-blade 28. The keyhole protector 29 has a slot 30 to receive blade 27 when the protector is in normal position. The latch-bolt 31 is adapted to remain in latched and unlatched positions. Spring 32 urges the latch-bolt to latched position. The guide 33 tends to keep the latch in its path. The stop 34 limits the rearward movement of the latch. The notch 35 permits the arm 36 to operate therein when the stem 37 is caused to rotate by turning the knob 38. The upright pivot pin 39 is adapted to enter the hollow barrel at lower end of the key mentioned below.
The key shown in Fig. 3 has a stem 40, which carries a slidable collar 41, with rod 42 secured thereto in any desired manner. This rod is adapted to make rigid the bit 44 which is slidable in slot 53 of the stem. The web 43 of the key limits the rearward movement of the bit, and the spring-blade 45 urges the bit outwardly. The pin 46 prevents withdrawal of the bit from the slot in the stem. In dotted outline 47 is shown the hollow barrel portion of the stem of the key to receive the pivot pin 39. The projection 48 limits the downward movement of the rod 42. The slot 49 in the bit affords an adjustable element 51, by means of screw 50. Preferably on the end of element 51 I provide an anti-friction element 52, but this may be omitted and the bolt shot and withdrawn eflectively. It will be noted that the transverse slot 53 in the stem will permit sliding movement of the bit when the rod 42 is withdrawn from aperture 54 in the bit by an upward movement of the collar 41, and the key will not operatethe thrustblade to completely withdraw the bolt, though the key may not be turned to a posiwho do not understand the construction of the lock, and closes the hole in plate 59 through which the key in Fig. 1 is inserted when preparing to unlock the lock. The plates 59 and 60 close opposite sides of the lock. The plate 59 has an aperture adapted to register with the aperture 62 in the locking-blade 27, and pin 61, shown in Fig. 7, is intended to be inserted through saidapertures to hold the blade 27 out of normal position to withdraw protector 29 and insert the key shown in Fig. 3.
The purpose of Figs. 11, 12, and 13, largely is to show more clearly the application of the keys to the lock. The outside plate or portion of the keyhole protector is designated by the numeral 30 in Fig. 11. The pin 61 shown in Fig. 7, isshown in position in Fig. 12 and its lower end given the reference numeral 61 The blade 27, shown in Fig. 71 carries beneath it integral therewith or attached thereto a depending lug 27 The free end 56 of the key in Fig. 4t is adapted to contact with the lug 27 when the key is rotated to withdraw the blade 27 from the slot 30 of the keyhole protector shown in Fig. 6.
In operation, beginning with normal locked condition, the screw 58 is withdrawn and the key shown in Fig. 4 inserted in through the screw opening and rotated until the bit 56 contacts with the depending lug 27 of the locking-blade 27 when the blade will be swung and withdrawn from slot 30 and'the keyhole protector may be withdrawn. Then the key shown in Fig. 3 may in the usual manner be inserted in the keyhole to the pivot pin 39 and rotated to withdraw or unlock the bolt. It will be understood the primary ward and the thrust-blade are capable of various adjustments and the adjustable element on the bit is correspondingly changeable. 7
The key shown in Fig. 3 operates as shown in Figs. 12 and 13. The part 26 in Fig. 9, would prevent the bit being swung past it but for the fact that the transverse opening 53 in the stem of the key permits sliding movement of the bit when the rod 42 is withdrawn from the aperture 54. When the bit has passed the part 26, and is approaching the tumbler 14: the collar 41 is pushed downwardly until the pin 16 enters the aperture in the bit to prevent sliding movement when the forward portion of the bit may be swung against the tumbler 1 1 and thus the detent 18 withdrawn from notch 17 when the anti-friction element 52 will contactwith the thrust-blade on one or' the other side of the notch 22 therein and the bolt 13 drawn to unlocked position. I
It is apparent changes may be made without departing from the spirit. and scope of the claims and, therefore, I do not limit my invention to the exact construction and arrangement above described of the-preferred form in which it has been embodied.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. A lock comprising a spring-actuated bolt, a thrust-blade carried by the bolt, an adjustable ward, and a key having an adjustable anti-friction element carried by the bit.
2. In a lock, the combination of a ward, a bolt, a thrust-blade carried by the bolt, a key with a slot in the stem and a bit slidable therein, and an adjustable elementcarried by the bit.
.In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH GOGMIN.
