Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented'fiept. 7. 1909.
. Application filed January 25 1909. Serial No. 474,085.
To all whom it may concern:
lle it known that We, EnNiis'r KOHLER, a. citizen of the United' States, and JOHN BLEIKER, a citizen of Switzerland, both residing at Alaineda,-in the county of Alanieda and State of California, have invented new and useful-Improvements in Combination Brushes and Combs, of which the following is a specification.
()urinvention relates to a combined hair brush and comb, and particularly -to thatc ass wherein the'body of the brush is so constituted as to form a receptacle for one or' more combs. p The ob ect of our invention is to provide a simple,'pract1 cal, novel and eifective form of a combined hair, brush and comb,-
in which the comb is adapted to be retained within the body portion of the brush when not in use, and in which suitable means are provided for readi'l' for use when desired.
A further object is to provide a combined hair brush and comb which is an article of general utility, and particularly suited for the uses of barber-s, hair-dressers, and-the like; which is compact in form and mat in appearance. r
"lhe'invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, n wh1ch'- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our combined hair brush and comb. Fig. 2 is I a plan 'view with the top portioniemoved,
showing the combs in a closed position. Fig. 3 is a section on the l ne X'X, F 1g. 2. Fig. 4 IS a diagrammatic view of the actuating mechanism, F ig; 5 is a detailed view of the thumb-piece and guide.
A is the body portion constituting the back and handle of a hair brush which may be of any suitable design or, construction, in which are formed the recesses 2 adapted to receive the combs 3 3. Toggle links 4 are pivoted at 5 to an actuating bar 6, and
to the combs 33, at -7; cooperating toggle? links 8 being fulcruined .to the brush back" A on pins 99 and pivoted tolinks 4 at-10. The actuating bar 6. is slotted at 11, Fig.
4, to permit of slida'ble movement Withre lation to the pin 9, and the bar is turned.
upward at one end, asat'l2, so as to form a thumb-piece 13, as shown in, Fig. 5.
y adjusting the comb "p pairing the parts.
' His a guide plate secured to the cover portion A, hav ng a narrow slot 15 Which upper portion of the thumb-piece.
Notclies -16 are cut in'the thumb-pieceto row slot 15 of the guide plate. A spring 17 placed upon the under side of the actuating bar'and under the thumb-piece, tends to retain the notches 16 the slot 15.
thumb-piece 13-,against the action of the the actuating bar 6 may be moved the length of the slot 15 in the guide plate 14:, whereand the actuating bar is retained in a locked osition.
When the actuating bar is moved in the direction of the arrow Z, Fig. 2, the inner move therewith, while the outer ends, by reason of being fulcrumed on the short links 8, will be moved outwardly in a direction at right angles to that of the actuating jected outward-by 'a'simple movement of the thumb-piece .in the opposite direction.
the toggle links on only one side of the brush will be required, the means of operation remaining. substantially the same.
The cover portion A may be secured to means, in such manner that it may be readily removed, for the is widcnedat the extremities to receive the out'of alinenient with 5 spring 17, until the notches 16 are, on the plane of the slot 15, the thumb-piece and upon-the notches are thrown out of engagement with the slot 15 bythe spring 17,

bar, until the position shown in Fig. 4; is
In the drawings, the brush is shown with "two combs attached, both. of which are .operated simultaneously; but it is apparent that when only one cc-inb is desired, but one recess will be made in the brush back, and
