Be it lnrown that 1, CHARLES B. WHIT- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lVatervlie't, in the county of Al- ,.j iber of passengers entering the car, and
, ing drawings forming a part of this specifi cation, in whlchsimilarcharacters of referwhich will permit of the exit of thevpassengers Without operating. the registering.
mechanism; also to, so construct the door that .the movements of the motorm-an on the platform will not be more restricted than whenthe usual type of door is employed.
This I accomplish by providing the door opening of thecar with revolving intersectmg doors having a, suitable-connectiorr withthe register to advance the latter one passenger each time a door moves from an open to a closedposition. One of the doors is hinged to swing or fold against an adjacent door to remove it from the platform, and is provided with nieans for rigidly connecting it in operative position with the remainingdoors, as when the latter. are in' operation.
Reference 1s to be had to the accompanyence indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a cross-section through a street railway car substantially on theline 11 of Fig. 2, showing it supplied with a door embodying my invention Fig. 2 is'a horizontal 1 section through the door and a portion of the car substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectionalview substantially on. the line 33 .of- Fig. 1; Fig. 4 isa section through the gears operated by the door; and Fig-5 'isa sectional fragmentary View. showing the locking means for' the hinged door,
The invention is adapted to be applied in the usual door opening betweenathe body of the car and the platform, and embodies in itsconstruction a plurality of doors 10, four being shown, equally spaced apart and rigidly connected together at opposite ends at their intersection between the flanges of castings "or center plates 11, mch casting having a centrally projecting stud or shaft '12, respectively journaled in the top of the doorfran eand the floor ofthe'car v tom shaft being extended a short di below the floor sills, where it has a a mounted thereon.
Rigidly attached to the bottom i; preferably adjacent to the underfacc bevel gear 13, isa ratchet wheel an by a spring-pressed pawl 15 pivo" gear 13. In' mesh with the smaller bevel gear 16, which in v form of the invention has one-fourth many teeth asthe gear l3,and rig secured to a horizontal shaft 17 trsnsvo st arranged and carryinga cam 18 on its posite and outer end. This cam is all directly under a vertical shaft 19, the lo: .7 end of which is preferably headed and fa ioned as indicated at :20 to provide a s stantially beveled bearing surface. Ehe to of the shaft 19 has a connection with slotted outer end of one of the o bell-crank lever 21, the opposite arm which is directly connected to the operat arni of any usual or other form of 22,.-i)y a link 23. By this con 1 each passenger enters the car at he side in-' dicated by the arrow in Fig. 2",, the do are given a quarter revolut reason of the connection with just described, advances the lat In this manner the total llllli'lQl sengers entering the car will he remade" the register, and as the passeng rs; car they go out on the same sit e as a entering, which in no wise interferes the registering mechanism by reason oi revolution of the lower shaft 12 indep' of thegear 13, afforded, by the ratchet wt and engaging pawl.
In order that the movements of the met. man on the platform will not he more stricted than when the usual sliding door is employed, the side "flanges of the top and I bottom castings are removed at one sio-v 5 one of the doors, as shown in Fig. 5, and door is hinged to the adjacent door side, as indicated at 2Zt,'adapting the hin -door to be swung or folded to a remo position,- as indicated in dotted ouiliuo n1: Fig. 2. hen the hinge? door is EQillllufd to operative positioi en it is arranged at the rear end of the car, :L is locked rip with the castings and the remaining doors bolts or latches 25. 1'
Having thus described my'invention, I
crank lever, one arm of which is connected to the vertical shaft, and a link between the opposite arm of the bell-crank lever and the operating armof the register.
2. The combination of intersecting doors revolnhly mounted, .e gear carried by the axis of said doors, e'register, an approximately vertical shaft operatively connected with the register, a second gear in mesh with the first, and :1 cam rigid with the second gear-and arranged in vorking relation to the vertical shaft.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 25 two subscribing-Witnesses.
