WILLIAM E. McGLEABY, OF PHILADELPHIL, PENNSYLVANLAL, ,ASSIGNOB 'ro cmim?- Spemeaflon of Letters Patent.
monimmmonnte Applieation m June s; 1909. Serial No. sszs.
To all whom tt may concem:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAM E. Mo- CLEARY, a citizen of the United States, residing :it` Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Maeh'ines, of which the following is a speeitieation.`
My inventon relates to molding machines,
and particularly to n leveling and holding neehanism for the mold bd'a'rd.
The object of my invention is to provide a, leveling and holding meehnnism for the mold board, by means of which` the mold board will have a, fixed and firm seat, and no'e particularly to provide a plnrality of movable supports for the molcl board, and
`'means for antomatically moving each support inde endently, and means fol" positively hol ing said supports in position to support the mold board. I have only shownin the drawing a detached portion of a noltling machine, with Tiny improvements in leveling and holding 'm echanisn combined tle'rewith, sntiieient to enable those skilled in the art 'to undersatzid the Construction andopets'ton thereof.
e Refer'ing to the di'zuvint--lgnre "1 is' V tt plan View of a nold tab withmy ime {ii-moments applied thereto, looking in the direction of arrow a, 1*`ig.*2; some of the parte' :n'e shown in section, and the nolti Imani shown in l `ig. 2 is not shown, and, `l `ig. :2 is :l side View ot' the parte shown in Fig. 1, looking n the direetion of arrow `b, same figure; showingthe mold bom-d;
some parte m'e shown in section.
In the acoornpenying drawing, 1 the table of a. !holding machine, which is; Suit- 40 eblv supported in any ismi and well known way.
3 is the bottom or n'old heard of the nohl m: flash', not shown.
Rigidly Secured to the tahle 'l are two bars 4, and i', prei'ernhly of wt'onght iron, which bars are of snit'eient length to take 4 ,tiny length of fiask that cun be used on the 'jtholding machine. On the ;m %L n'e a& ijustnbly Secured, by set serews 5', Fig, 1, the two sup iortng parte 5 oi" one pii' of leveling anc l holding mee anisms, which consists in this instnnre of the two horizonlzlly extt-inling; ylinier (i. and the two vertimlly vxtemling cylimlers T, in this instance made integral, at the front of the machine. r
To the bar 4' are'ndjistably Secured, by set screws 8', the two sup portin piirts 8, of
asecond pair of leveling and hol mgmeehanisns, which consists in this 'intanc'e of the two horizonthll extending oylinde's 9, and
the two vertica ly extndi'n"` c'ylinders 10, in
A lehcally coled expansion spring 12, see
Fig. 2, is located-within the lower patof each oylinde' 7, and 10, and nete to nntomnticnll move np the plnngers 11 independent y. An opening ll", see Fig. 2, is made throi h each plnnge', to receive n wedge shape hr 13, said w edge shapdb'' 13 extend within the horizontnlly extending cylindersfi, and 9, andere adaptd to move loosely therein.
patente& Seit. 7 19691 horizontnllv extencling eyliisii (ler G is a helit'nlly ooiled expnnsion spring 4 14, :see Fig. 1, which ienthpterl to llom" :It
one end against the ron'del end 13' onthe wedge shaped bar 13, and at its other end against a hed or block ti' within the ote' end of the'oylinclrs G, see Fig. 1, to move the hai-s 13 intothe-opening's 1 1 in tin-` plunger 11. 'Tn each of the horizo'tzlly extending eylinders il is also n helically eoiled expa'nsion spring 14, see lug. 2, which s ndnpted to bear nt one end against the ro1nd eci end 13' of the 'wetlge ehnplbar 13, and nt its other enti against n block or enti 9 Secured in the end of the cylinders 9, to
'move the bars 13 into the omnings 11" in the plnnge's 11. 'l`he springs 14, and 14:'
not to veldingly move the wedge shaped,
Attached to each, of one pair of wedge shnpui 'nen' 13. :lltl extmnling out therefi'on through. the emls t' of, the eylinderg), is' n rod 15. To the end of each rod is Secured, in this instance b a set screw 16, the hub 17' on a bar 17. l lach bar 17, (there are two bars,) has a hooked shaped end 17 which is adapted to be engaged by an extension 18' on a slide 18, which s suitably mounted to have a longitudinal movement. Each slide 18, (there are two slides,) has a boss 18" thereon, see F 2, which carries a stud 19, and on the stu 19 is pivotally mounted one end of a link or Connector 20; the other end of said link or connecter 20 is ivotally mounted on a stud 21' on a hand ever 21. The hand lever 21 is pivotally mounted on a stud 22, Secured in ears 23 on the cylinder 6. The extensions 18' on the two slides 18, a'e also adapted to engage the ends of the wedge shaped bars 13 in the two cylinders 6, to move them ontwardly, or out of operative position.
By means of the mechanism above described, connected with the bars 13, said bars are positively withdrawn from the plungers 11 and held in their inoperative position, against the action of the springs 14, and 14?.
On one of thelvertically extending cylinders T is a side extension or Stand 2 1, which I term a finder post., the upper end of this post has a sharpened pin or spur 24'. Extending upwardly in this instance from one of the two cylindcrs 9 is a second finder post 24 having at its upper end a shzrpened pin or spur 24 The two finder posts 24, and
24", and the pins 24', and 24 are so located ,that they will cohe under the dingoal cross piece of the nold board.
From the above descript on n connectop I With the drawings, the operation of y-unprovenents will be rendily understand hy those skilled in the hrt.
hen the nohl or flash is rolled or moved over upon the nold table, the two hand le Vers 21 at the front of the machine, are in the position shown by full linos in which position the wedge shaped plates 13 will be moved away from the vertically noving plungers 11, leaving said plungers yieldingly sujported independently by their actuatings'prings 12, 'The table 1 of the molding machine will be moved up by the ordinary adjnsting or raising mechanisn` until the finder posts 24, and 24", are brought up 'against the nold board 3, and the pins and 24 exted into the nold board 3, as shown in Fig. 2, and serve to securely hold the mold board 3, and prevent anvlateral movement thereof. .The hand levrs 21 are then moved by the operator, in this instance sidewise, until thev take' the position' shownby broken lines in Fig. 1. he movement of the hand levers 21, through connectors 20, will move the slides 18 inwardly, as shown by broken linos in the lower part of Fi 1, to release the weclge shaped bars 13, at t e left in Figs. 1, and 2, and also to release the bars 17 and rods 15, and allow the springs 14, and 14:" to act, to move the wedge shaped bars 13, and cause them to enter the openings in the plungers 11 to rigidly hold said plungers in their raised position, and form a firn and rigid support for said plungers 11, and the mold board 3 thereon. The pins 24', and 24'" on the finder posts 24:, and 24', hold the mold board 3 so that it will not be moved laterally by the evening device, and after the pattern is removed from the mold, and the nold is dusted, the pattern can be placed back in the mold precisely as it came out.
It Will be understood that the details of Construction of my inproven'ents in leveling and holding mechanism may be varied if desired, and` my improvements may be attached to any kind of a nolding machine,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
I 1. In a, molding machine, a plurality of novable supports for the mold board, means for automatically moving each support independently, and means for positively holding said supports in position to support the mold board, and finder. posts, having extensions or Spurs thereon to enter the lower side of the 1nold board and hold it in place.
2. In a molding machine, the combinatio with vertically extendig cylinders, and spring actated vertically moving plmgers within said cylinders, to yieldingly support the nold board, of means for positively holding said plungers in their raised position, said means conprisng wedge sha ed bars within'horizontally extending cy inders, and means for vieldingly moving' said bars into the openings in the plungers, to rigidly support the plungers, and positive means for withdrawing said bars from the plng'ers, and holding said bars 'in inoperativo. position.
