JAMES n. MEYER, or runnin 'Home Mssounr.

Applieatian mea october e1, 19o?. serial no. 398,404.
To all :whom 'it may concern:
lilo 1t known that I, JAMES A; MEYER, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Prairie Home, Cooper county, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Smoothing-Irons,of which the fol lowing is a specification.
My invention relates `to anew and useful improvement in smoothing irons, Aand has for its obgfeet to p rovide an exceedingly simple and e ective device by which liquidi fuel may be supplied to the iron and the vlatter he heated without the necessity of transferring to a stove for that purpose. 1
With these ends in view, thisl :invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set fprth and then specifically designated by the c ann. 1
In order that those skilled-in the art to which this invention ap ertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawin formin a part of this specilication, in w ich the gure is a side elevation of a smoothing iron made in accordance with my invention.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied A represents a hollow ,iron which is closed hythe top B, which is fastened to the iron by means of hinges L anda catch M, to which top is attached in any suitable manner the handle C and the burner D. Burner I) is composed of a pipe having a horizontal portion arranged above the top of the iron and a curved end which is ointed at its extremity and formed with aco lar D', the latter seating on a bushing or sleeve D,
which latter is secured to the top of the iron and is perforated to admit the curved end of the burner. Valve E to regulate the size of the flame is carried by the horizontal part of the burner.
The fuel for the iron is supplied by the hose F, from the tank Gr, which may be any suitable size or shape. Upon the outlet of this tank is a valve H, which is to be turned off when the iron is not in use to prevent the escape of the fuel, I is an inlet by which the tank is supplied with oil, and J is an inlet for air to which may be attached a pump for supplying air to the tank and this inlet J preferably has the usual cheek valve located therein, K is a gage attachment to the tank for indicatino' the pressure in the latter, and N is a hand e alsol attached to the tank so that it may be moved from place to place with little trouble.
In practice the oil.issuing from tank G, through pipe F, is ignited at the burner D, the flameencountering the baille-r plate l". Air for combustion purposes enters through the inlets C' in the side walls of the iron A.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications may be made without departing from the spirlt of my invention.
Having thus fullyldescribed my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- In combination with a -hollow iron, a sleeve secured to the top of said iron and projecting on the interior thereof, a burner consisting of a tube having a horizontal part overlying the top of said iron and formed with a downwardly curved pointed end which extends through said sleeve, a collar on said end abutting the inner .end of said sleeve, a valvev on the horizontal part of said tube, and means connected to the outer end of said horizontal part to feed fuel to said burner.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto ailixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES A. MEYER.
