Specification iof Lettersrlatenti e Applicatiomled Nowemberfj, 190.8. Serial No. .461,397.
Patentedsept; 7, 1909i Toi all Jwhom/it mag/consenta Be Iit known. that-I, DAVID W. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States,A residing at West .Milwaukee, .f in; :the county of Milwau- .fk-ee and State .of lllisconsin, have invented. certain new andv useful. 'Improvements in VVashingfMachines of which the f. following is a specification, referencebeing .had ntherein r-to the accompany-ing. drawing.
My invention f relates to improvements in machines for, washing clothing,` and the primary objectthereotis to provideawash ing machine@ of simple ,andfnovel construction that may be` of. comparatively small size, yet capable. of. rapidly. `and thoroughly cleansing the clothing.
Another object of. the invention is tov provide a simple, quick and eiiicient machinel for.. washing clotheswith .greataease without having1 any deleterious ,effects upon; theinost delicate -abrics by subj ecting the. `clothes t'o f. thexpounding action ,of ya reciprocating ele- `i ment, Ythis-.operation being, `carried* on in a suitable tub or containerfso-thatthe water,f which isfpreferahly'.hotgandisoapy, may be thoroughlyvforced. through :the interstices.
of the clothes and-in this. mannersecure the maxi-mum detergent qualities of Vtheladmixfv ture .of soap i and water.
To the accomplishment of the.` recited obj ects anda others cordinate therewith, the li preferred embodiment ofxmy invention re-` sides infthat construction 4and `arrangement of parts .hereinafter described, illustratedin i the accompanying drawings, and .embraced withinthe scope of theappendedclaims.
In said ydrawings:-ll`igure Iy risan eleva. tion .of the complete inventionfpartly in.
section. Fig. II 1s a plan view .of thetub cover and ithe appurtena nt .op erating mechanism. Fig. III `is--a transversesection taken: alonglines; 3-3 0;Fg. I. Eig.,;IV is Ya ltrans-.verse verticalsection taken along lines- 4 4 of Fig. I, Ythe tub fnotfbeingshown.-
which may be formed .01" a single piece of wood, and has arranged in parallelism on oppositesides of the diameter thereof the metallic strips -(f) the latter intersecting :thefarcsof the circumference of said cover .as tofpresent .chords and being fastenedto the covenbyqthe screws (8) It will be noted: in thisconnection that one pair of the distal Vends?y ofv theV strips (7) are' Yflush with the peripheryofthe cover (.6) and that the oppositek terminals protrude slightly beyond theetop ofsaidlcover.. I have devised this ar.``
rangements in order` that the extended .termi- .na-ls may. present receptivel bearing surfaces .for the U-shapedrtransversely extending-piece (-`9),.the latter being-riveted to said strips,
`as at, 10.. Arranged approximately. medially o the longitudinal .extent Yof eachstrip (7) and. having its outwardly extending base portions` secured thereto, as ,at l1, is an inverted Ueshaped support (.12), the upper horizontal: porti-ons of said supports hav-ing a central `and transversely. extending semicircular `depression. (13.), and a congruent plate (fllywith a similar. depression, (15),v :this organization. providing suitable bearings for-.fthertrnnnions (16) whichnreright .angularlyl deflected` with respect to and orrnedias-aniintegralpart of the operating handle (171)` and have formed as a part thereof the flattened terminals (18),. ar-
.rangedin :parallelism relative to each; other and the' side portions of the lli-shaped handle (1.7). Pivotally secured to the outer eX- tremital ,portions-.of eacharm (18). by the ycouplingbolt (19) is a. pair of depending .links (20).thelower `ends ofwhichare like wise secured, .as 2l, to the inner terminals of the rocking bar (22), the outenterminals of vsaid: bar havingpivotal! connection at 23 f with theevertically., disposed arms (24) of `the member ln'closedrwithin'gthe--tub :(5) is a basket (25) having a general cylindrical conforma- `:tionand comprising: in :its construction a .pai-r of; circularfbanf'ds 26)^and (2.7) joined by'athef"spacedverticaL 4ats (.28):v andy having a wovenwire bottom (29) of .coarse mesh, atli'ewires :being fastened. to the lower `band e (12.7%) i Maninfestly, :the basket .mayv=beotherwisexconstructed tto; be foraminous .oir reticu- .lated At.,` diametricallyl opposite `points of the basket one of the slats (28) is continued upwardly a considerable distance beyond the Vband (26) and the cover (6) the latter being obviously provided with slots (30) for the passage and operation of these extensions, which for the sake of clearness of illustration will be designated by the numerals (31). The upper eXtremital portion of each membe'r (31) is bifurcated, as at 32, and arranged through the portions constituting said bifurcation is a key slot (33), the rocking bars (22) being equipped with slots designed for registration with said first mentioned slots, -a pivotal locked connection being attained by the keys In conjunction with the foregoing mechanism I employ what might be termed a presser or follower, the same comprising pairs of slats joined at their opposite ends and arranged in superposed relation at right angles to each other to present the general conformation of a cross. Among the cooperative features of this mechanism is a pair of opposed angle irons (35), the horizontal portions of which are secured to the underneath side of the cover (6) as at 3(3,the vertical arms yextending through the slot (37) arranged medially of said cover. Ad-
^ topmost one being pivoted, as at 1, to the basket (25).
lower proximal end of the member 35, and the lowermost one having connection with the follower at 2, and the latter being wide enough to inclose the inverted intermediate U-iron, to which it is pivotally fastened by the transversely arranged pin (3), the intermediate U-iron being in turn secured to the topmost U-iron, as at 4. The upper terminals of the angle irons are provided with apertures (40) for the reception of the coupling bolt (41) and in furtherance of this adjustable feature both sides of the U-shaped member (38) are similarly perforated, as at 42, to register with the first mentioned perforations in the angle irons (35). j
To permit ready access to the tub (5) I preferably provide a hinged door (43) in the cover. The plates (14) are also equipped with apertures (44) for purposes of lubrication.
In practical operation the tub (5) is filled three-fourths of its depth with hot soapy water and the clothes are placed within the This operation may be attained either by resort to the opening of the door (43) in the cover (6) or first placing the clothes in the basket and subsequently connecting the latter with the operating mechanism by means of the key and key slot arrangement hereinbefore described. Assuming that the clothes are inthe basket and the desired adjustment of the follower (35a) is secured, the handle (17) is oscillated which through the medium of the toggle like connections and the slots (28) imparts a reciprocatory movement to the basket (25), the clothes contained therein contacting with the said follower which owing to the universal connection with the inverted U-shaped member (38) will equalize the pressure on the clothes and force the detergent admiXture of soap and water therethrough. 'Ihe' pressure of the follower (35) may be adjusted according to the quantity of clothes contained in the basket by manipulating the coupling bolt (41) in the alined perforations (42). After this operation has been continued a sufficient length of time the clothes may be readily removed from the basket by again resorting to the door or the detachable connections,
It will thus be seen that I have devised a washing machine which is thoroughly effective and reliable in operation and which furthermore may be dissembled with facility to permit a storing or removal of the clothes from the basket.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. In a washing machine, the combination of al tub having a cover, a basket within said tub, a follower cooperating with said basket, and means for permitting angular movement of said follower in all directions when the basket is operated.
2. In a clothes-washing machine, the conibination of a tub having a cover, a basket within said tub, a follower cooperating with said basket, means for permitting angular movement of said follower in all directions, and means carried by the cover for imparting a reciprocatory movement to said basket.
3. In a clothes-washing machine, the combination with a tub having a cover, of a basket mounted within said tub and having uprights projecting through said cover, a pair of rocking bars mounted on said cover and connected to said uprights, an oscillatory handle connected tosaid bars, a follower coperating with said basket and means for permitting angular movement of said follower in all directions.
4. In a clothes-washing machine, the combination with a tub having a cover, a reciprocatory basket mounted in said tub, a pair of angle irons secured to said cover and extending vertically therefrom, a member slidably adjustable with respect to said angle irons, and a follower connected to said member and having an angular movement in all directions.
5. In a washing-machine, the combination with a tub having a cover, of a basket mounted within said tub and having` uprights prosaid member and havingan angular movejecting through said cover, a pair of rocking ment in all directions. 10 bars mounted on said cover and connected to In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my said uprights, a handle connected to said signature in presence of two witnesses.
bars, a pair of angle irons secured to said DAVID W. SCOTT. cover and extending vertically therethrough7 Witnesses: a member slidably adjustable with respect to @HARLEY DAVIS, said angle irons, and a follower connected to` WILLIAM A. PIERCE.
