WASHING- MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 24, 1908. Serial N... 445,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoPHUs HARTMANN, subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in. the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a washing machine, the object being to provide a device of this character which is simple, durable and efficient and easily operated, and consists in the features of con struction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this invention: Figure 1- is a per,-'
spective view of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2- is a vertical section of the same, part of the operating mechanism being removed. Fig.
' 3 is a similar section to Fig. 2 showing the operating mechanism omitted from the latter and omitting the mechanism shown therein. Fig. l is a top plan view of a scouring plate employed. Fig. -5 is a plansection of the machine. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail vertical section of the same on the line 66 of Fig. -7. Fig. 7 is a-plan view of the machine. Fig. -8- is a detail section of the scouring plate employed taken on the line S-8 of Fig. 4L-. Fi 9- is a transverse vertical section through' the device in an operative position.
The main object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient washing machine for home use which can be set on the stove to boil the clothes at the same time that the latter are subjected to the scouring operation.-
Further objects of the invention are to provide a simple and compact machine which is durable, easily operated and cleansed, and which will fill all requirements of the household laundry.
The device comprises a cylindrical vessel A within which are mounted two pairs of revoluble rings B B and GG, one ring of each pair being disposed near the bottom and near the top of, the vessel respectively.
Each pair of said rings is connected together at diametrically opposite points-by means of vertical rods DD and E-E respectively,
Patented Sept. '7 1909.
said rods being secured thereto by means of A v cleats F. The rings serve to maintain the rods, in relative vertical position. At their upper ends said rods are U-shaped, the extreme free endportions thereof overlapping the upper outer edge of the vessel A. In the hook'thus formed an anti-friction roller G is mounted which is adapted to travel upon the upper edge of the receptacle.
Corrugated circular plates H and I provided at diametrically opposite points with forked projections J, are disposed within said vessel, the plate H at the bottom thereof being equipped with projections K to maintain the same a given distance above the bottom of said vessel. The forked projections of said plate H engage the rods D. The plates I are successively supported at higher elevations upon clot-hing disposed upon the plate H and successively upon said plates I, the forked projections of the lowest of the latter engaging the rods E, the next higher engaging the rods D and so on, successively higher plates alternately engaging the rods D and E.
Levers L and M pivotally connected together between their ends by means of a hollow internally threaded sleeve N through which the threaded shank of a hand screw 0 passes. The said levers are provided at one end with handles P and are further provided equidistantly from the pivotal connection thereof with each other with longitudinal slots Q and R which are adapted respectively to receive the upper looped ends of the rods D and E. By grasping the said handles P and oscillating said levers in opposite directions, the plates H and I are oscillated thus scouring the layers of clothing interposed between the various plates, the plates above and below each layer moving in opposite direction. Said levers L and M are provided with hooks S adapted to engage the loops of said rods to secure said levers.
The vessel A is equipped with a drain cock T.
I claim as my invention:
1. A washing machine comprising a cylindrical vessel, a plurality of pairs of revoluble rings mounted therein, a plurality of pairs of vertical rods secured to said respective pairs of rings, a plurality of scouring plates operatively engaging said rods, and oscillating levers engaging said rods to oscillate the same.
2. A washing machine comprising a cylindrical vessel, a plurality of pairs of revoluble rings mounted therein, a pluralityi ing plates operatively engaging said ro ds, osclllating levers engaging said respective pairs of rods to oscillate the same, an internally threaded sleeve pivotally connecting said levers with each other, and a hand screw passing through said sleeve and adapted to ioear upon the uppermost of said plates.
, 3. A washing machine comprising a cylindrical Vessel, a plurality of pairs of vertical rods having outwardly and downwardly curved upper ends, rollers mounted in said curved ends and adapted to travel around the upper edge of said vessel, a plurality of pairs of revoluble rings secured to said rods, and means for actuating said rods to cause the scouring plates to be oscillated in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SOPHUS HARTMANN.
