COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept, '7, 1909.
Application filed May 10, 1909. Serial No, 494,968.
' of carpenters.
The object thereof is toprovide a simply constructed and eflicient tool. of this class adapted to be used as a compass, rule and siding gage and marker.
With the foregoing and otherobjccts in view, the invention cousist-s'of certain novel features of construction, combination andarrangement of parts, as will-be more'fully clescribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of this im )roved tool; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner end of the piv oted members showing them in open position.
Fig. t is a side elevation partly in section of the tool with the members in closed position and wlth their outer ends broken off. 1s a transverse section on l1ne 55 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated, two mombers 1 and 2 are pivotally connected at 3 in the manner of an ordinary compass and-are provided at their free ends with pointed members 4- and 5 similar to the legs of a compass. A screw 6 is arranged at the pivoted ends of the members 1 and 2 to hold said.
members apart when they are set for spacing when the device is to be used as a compass. The member 2 is constructed as shown in Fig. 1 with a scale arranged onone side thereof and with a longitudinally arranged slot 7 extending edgewise through said member, preferably for about two-thirds of the length thereof and which is designed for/a purpose to be described. This member 2 is preferably made L-shape andthe long arm thereofisJpreferably provided with a laterally extending lug 8 which is adapted to abut against a similar lug 9 carried at the pivoted end of the member 1 whensaidmeinbers 1 and 2 are 111 closed positlon, the inner Fig. 0
sired to pass through the slot .1 claim is:
I :face of the short arm 10 of the member 2 being designed to fit against the bottom edge of the siding, as will be hereinafter described. A lever 11 is secured at one end at 12 to the pivoted end of the member 2 and a spring 13 is arranged thereunder to exert its tension to hold the free end of said lever outward when not in use. A button 14 is mounted on the free end of the lever 11 for depressing said lever to cause a pointed stud 15 to engage and make an impression in the siding at the point desired to indicate where the nail is to be set. This stud 15 is mounted for longitudinal adjustment on the lever 11 and the point thereof is held normally by said lever in withdrawn or inoperative position, it being adapted to be projected into operative position by depressing the button 14. on the free end of the lever. y
When the device is to be used'in putting on siding, themembers 4 and 5 thereof are opened and the tool slipped down over the edge-ofthe siding until the inner faces of the lug 8 and arm 10 are held against the corner board or casing. A line is then drawn across the siding along the scale or rule carried by the member 2 and the tool is then slipped back an inch or so from the casing or corner board and the arm 10 is engaged with the bottom edge of the siding. hen so engaged, the button 14 on the lever 11 is depressed to cause the point of the stud 15 which has been adjusted at the point de- 7 to form an impression in the siding at the point where the nail is to be set.
It will thus be readily seen that this tool may be used either as a rule and compass or as a siding gage and a gage to mark the siding.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings,
the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificlng any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended clanns.
Having thus descrlbed my invention, what 1. A tool comprising two members pivotally connected at one end thereof and having their free ends pointed to form compass members, one of said members being approximately L-shaped and having the short arm thereof extended inwardly toward the other member, the long arm of said L-shaped member being provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a lever secured at one end to said long arm and having a pointed stud adjustably mounted thereon and operable through said slot for marking a siding.
2. A combination tool comprising two members pivotally connected at one end, one of said members being straight and the other ing toward the other member, a spring pressed member secured at one end near the pivoted end of said L-shaped member, a longitudinally adjustable marking stud mounted on said lever, and normally held in inoperative position, and means carried by L-shaped with the short arm thereof extend,-
said lever for projecting said stud into op erative position.
3. A tool comprising two pivotally connected members having the free ends thereof pointed, one of said members being L-shaped with its short arm extending inwardly toward the other member, a lever pivoted at one end to the long arm of said L-shaped member, a marking stud mounted for lon itudinal adjustment on said lever, means or holding said stud normally in inoperative position, and means carried by said lever for moving said stud into operative position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
