Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
Application filed January 9, 1909. Serial No. 471,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Osnon A. CLARK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to WhlCh it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanylng drawmgs, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a safety razor that comprises a handle portion which is screwed on a screw-threaded stem on a face plate, and these two, when screwed together, hold between them a guard and a blade so that the blade, which has preferably two opposite cutting edges, can be used for shaving 1n con unctlon with the guard so as to prevent cutting the' operator.
The invention is particularly designed to provide co-acting means on the guard and on the face plate to hold the face plate and the backing n register and to 'osition them when they are assembled, and a so to provide the blade with a perforation to permit the assembllng of the parts through the blade and to also permit the blade to'surround the position ng means or the co-acting means for holdlng the guard andthe face plate in register so that the blade'is also held in its proper position with its edges in parallel re-. lat1 on w1th the edges of the guard. The coacting means for holding'the'parts in register are arranged on the opposed faces of the guard and the face plate and pass onl through the blade and not through eac other so that the expensive perforation of parts is obviated, and there are also no unseemly projecting portions, whereby the exterior is smooth and without any protuberances.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanymg drawing, in which.
Figure 1 is a to view of the razor. Fig. 2 1s a side view 0 the same, one half of the blade-holding portion being tion. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the center of the razor showing'the handle in elevation. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the razor w1th its parts separated, but showmg the handle up close to the guard.
shown in sec- The device comprises a guard 10 which is preferably formed with an upper face to form a fiat bearing surface fora blade and has teeth 11, which teeth are preferably arranged on the-two opposite edges, since the duplication of edges, which is not essential, gives more utility to the device. 011 the guard is placed a blade 12 which has its two opposite edges 13 sharpened to form cutting edges, which .edges are adapted to co-act with the teeth 11 and form the safety cutting edges. The bladeis also provided with a perforation 14 which is made of a contour substantially the, same as a projection 15 on the guard sothat when the blade is set dowr over this projection, it is held against any twisting, and the edges of the guard and the edges of the blade are bound to be parallel. The ard is perforated as at 16, which pen foratron recelves a screw-threaded post 1! which projects from the face plate 18, which face late has a curved outer surface 19 to give 1t a smooth face on the portion that comes in contact with the operators face. The portions 20 of the face plate 18 rest down on the ends of the blade 12, as shown in'Fig. 2, and hold the blade strictly in position, the face plate beingrecessed as at 21 to receive the ends of the projection 15 so that when the face plate is in position on top of the blade and the guard, it is also held against any twisting, and its edges are also insured in their parallel relation with the edges of the blade and the edges of the guard. A handle 22 has a shoulder 23 which is pressed up against a flange 24 on the guard, and it also has a screw-threaded recess 25 which receives the screw-threaded post 17, and whenthe handle is turned all the parts are locked in their position. I
When the razor is to be assembled, the face plate and the blade are placed together with the co-acting means on the face plate and on the guard operating to hold the parts together, and the blade, by means of its perfaceplate are preferably made of the same I contour, particularly on their ends, but are made slightly longer than the guard so that when the handle 22 is unscrewed, the blade and the face plate can be taken from the guard together and then separated one from the other afterward. It also provides an easy means for holding the blade and the face plate by means of the thumb and forefinger of one hand, When they are assembled, and they are thus held in register while being placed over the projection 15 of the guard.
, Having thus described my invention,what I claim 1s:
1. A safety razor comprising a guard having a substantially centrally arranged perforation, a projecting portion on the face of the guard and extending both sides of the perforation, a blade having a single perforation to receive the projecting portions on the guard, a face plate having a recess on its inner face to receive the projections on the guard, a screw-threaded stud en the face plate adapted to dpass through the perforation in the guar to approximately center the face plate on the guard and on which the face plate can be swun to seat itself on the projection of the guar and a handle to bear on the under side of the guard and receive the siewahreaded stud to secure the parts together.
2. A safetyrazor comprlslng a nerd hav I ing a substantially central per oration, a
guard to permit the fingers to pass the guard so that the face plate and blade can be seated at the same time on the projection on the guard, a screw-threaded stud passing projecting portion on the face of the guard through the perforation in the guard, and a handle to receive the stud to secure the parts together.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing, 1;?
I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of January 1209.
. osnon A. CLARK.
