PHILIP L. WOOSTER, OF YON KERS, NW YORK, ASSIGN TO-DURYEA MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
' v A CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY IBELTI-NG.
Application filed October 17,' .1905. Seria1`No.v283,173.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP L. l/VoosTER, a citizen -of the United States, residing in Yonkers, in the county of Vestchesterand State of New York, .have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vBelting, of which the following 'is a specification.
This invention relates to. certain improvem'ents in belting so that it is rendered waterproof and more lasting in use; and for this purpose the invention consists in providing an absorbent woven fabric bodyportion which is impregnated with' an asphaltum composition and then compressed and dried, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.
' 'Referring tov the accompanying drawings, reference indicate, corresponding parts infeach of the several' fi Ires, Figure 1 represents a front lelevation o .my improved belting, and Fig.- 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on the line- 2 2 of Fig. l.
- In. said drawings, a represents the web'of my improved belting, and lwhich is preferably made of closely woven cotton fabric.
`This web issaturated under pressure with a solution of asphaltum having a bituminous l base in a suitable hydrocarbon, carbon suld,
solvent of asphaltum. is impregnated in the or. other suitable When the solution woven body portion, the same is passed through suitable rollers sol as to smooth the surface', and then dried at ordinary or artificial temperature. It assumes thereby a dead-black color and is slightly moist to the touch and capable of resisting the changes of moisture in the atmosphere in a very efectf ive manner, while it is rendered very durable and capable of outlasting the ordinary cotton belting. v
The advantages of my improved belting are that the same is impervious towater, resistsV the ordinary changes of temperature and moisture in the atmosphere, and, has long life, great durability and high friction with a corresponding decrease in slippage. The body portion can also be made from jute or other textile fiber.
I-Iavingthus described the inyention what Iclaimis: l As an article of manufacture, belting consisting of an absorbent woven fabric body portion which has .been saturated with asolution of asphaltum and dried.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
; PHILIP ILWOOSTER..
