HYDRAULIC VALVE.
932, 955. Speci cation of Letters Patent.
lntented Aug. 31., 1969.
Application filed April 2, 1999. Serial N0.487,5l0.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Loonrnin'r Bncxror: and l i lLLlRQl PATON Bntm'ron, engineers subjects of the King of Great Britain, both residing at 5 Marine Crescent. \Vaterloo, Liverpool, in the county of Loncaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in llydruulic Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This int" ition relates to hydraulic valve. of the class in which a slide is lixcd to a ditt'erential piston working in a hydrau ic cylinder one end of which is always open to the water supply which acts on the smaller area of the piston. The slide works on threei orts in the side or" the cylinder, two of the ports opening into pre ipp pipes i'cd "roni the cylinder while the third port is en haust port. The valve is oporat d av anewing the water under pres other end the cylind larger area of the pi [on as well as on the smalier area. When the valve is in either of two extreme positions one er the mentioned pipes is )llQCl with water under from the cylinder while the other Valves of this the watertigl t In such valves it ld the piston and position so t the water both t the supply pipes lesd- "llr dilliculty howc plSLOll or the eir in e; is cut oil r 1 1 ing from t ever arises valve suppl 7 or the pis on lee ports are I. to those .aove ncctcd to the snppl haus and a long piston is employed which always covers these ports. i groove mode around the piston and this groove is connected by small passage to the larger face of the piston. ll hen the piston moves slightly in one direction from its mid position the groove comes over the small e):- haust port so that any water leaking 1 ast the piston can escape without materially moving the piston. Similarly when the piston moves slightly in the other direction from its inid position the groove comes over the supply portso that any small leakage past the valve is made good. In place of the piston itself acting as a. valve to open and close the small ports a slidc valve operated by the piston may be used. The same result may be obtained by s. plug cook or double beat valve connected to the piston by rods or links.
Figure l is a vertical central section and 2 is an elevation partly in section of {L hydraulic valve oi the type reierred to modiiied in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a modification. Fig. lis a plan and Fig. 5 an elevation of another modification.
in Figs. 1 and 2 a is the hydraulic cylinder having in it a piston o. i-rrod Z) is fixed to'the piston Z) so that the effective area of the top oi the piston is less than that of the bottom. The rod 7) passes out of the cy inder at through a cup lesther a. The ton of th c linder a is always supplied with the bto of the cylinder by the pipe (Z.
L is i; Sildfi valve lined to the piston b and a a ports 1n the cylinder connected respectively to pipes e f and g, c and g oc g p for supplying water under pr ore to any desired places and f being the ex ust pipe. in the position shown the PisLOP. b is about midway oit its stroke and the pipes c an L g are all closed. So
s of ordinary construc- L o h 1 description is necessary. 7; 1s a shaped pess ge termed in one slide am is another passage in the face of the slide 11 the plane of the passage csvity in the valve 6 in the c linder a which. is conb; s 11 j to bottom of the c land o, a groove or passage formed h wall or 'he cylinder. The piston b is .ionary in its mid position i wing DitdllltilI-lf by reason of i ge r any other cause the piston begins descend, the upper end of the passage c nos into con'nnunication with the port a and its lower end into connnunication with the passage a. lVater under pressure now 1 asses from the upper end of the cylinder by the passages (E6 and 6 port a and pipe into the lower end of the cylinder causing the piston to rise again. piston begins to rise owing to leakage past it or from any other cause the passage b is put into communication with the port a and Similarly if the;
the exhaust port a and the surplus water from the lower end of the cylinder escapes directly to the exhaust by the pipe 7', porto passage 6*, port (11 and pipe 7", and the piston is forced down again by the pr =ure on its top.
Fig. 3 shows a modified arrangement. a is a port connected by a passage 71: to the upper end of the cylinder and c is an exhaust port.
7/ is a groove around the piston and 7) is a vertical groove connected to'it. As shown the piston is in its mid position and the groove 6* is between the ports a and It the piston descends water is supplied from the upper end of the cylinder to the lower end by the passage ZJ, port (4, and grooves 71' and Z). it the piston rises the surplus water "from the lower end of the cylinder escapes to the exhaust by the groove 7)" and port (4 Figs. l and 5 show a modification in which the piston rod 6 is connected to and operates the lever Z of a three way cock. m, n and 0 are pipes connecting ports in the shell of the cock to the upper end of the cylinder, its lower end and the exhaust respectively. ,Vhen the piston moves downward from its mid position water is supplied from the upper end of the cylinder to its lower end by the pipe m, roove 7) in the plug of the cock, and pipe n, and when the piston rises the lower end of the cylinder is put into communication with the exhaust by the pipe a, groove 9 in the plug, and pipe 0.
In the preceding description it has been assumed that it is desired to hold the piston stationary in its mid position but it will be obvious that by suitably varying the positions of the subsidiary ports 8:0. it can be held in any desired position.
The subsidiary ports and passages above described are small as they are desired to come in o operation only when the piston is moving very slowly owing to leakage and they therefore practically inoperative when the piston moving rapidly from one end of the cylinder to the other in the ordi nary working of the hydraulic valve.
hat we claim is 1. The combination with a hydraulic valve comprising :a cylinder, a valve face in the cylinder, a dillerential piston in the cylinder, a slide valve moving with the piston and working on the valve face, a pipe constantly supplying fluid under pressure to the end of the cylinder containing the smaller area of the piston, a pipe supplying at will fluid under pressure to the other end of the cylinder, and two pressure supply pipes and an exhaust pipe leading from the valve face z-ot means operated by the movement of the piston for automatically coinpensating for creeping of the piston due to leakage when the piston is at Hli(l-Sl1Ol G or in some predetermined position internuidiatc the ends of its stroke.
2. The combination with a hydraulic valve comprising :a cylinder, a valve face in the cylinder, a diiierential piston in the cylinder, a slide valve moving with the piston and working on the valve face, a pipe constantly supplying fluid under pressure to the end of the cylinder containing the smaller area of the piston, a pipe supplying at will fluid under pressure to the other end of the cylinder, and two pressure supply pipes and an exhaustpipe leading from the valve face:-ot means for supplying fluid to and allowing it to escape from the portion of the cylinder containing the larger end of the piston when the latter is moving slowly.
3. The combination with a hydraulic valve comprising :a cylinder, a valve face in the cylinder, a differential piston in the cylinder, a slide valve moving with the piston and workin on the valve face, a pipe constantly supplying fluid under pressure to the end of the cylinder containing the smaller area of the piston, a pipe supplying at will fluid under pressure to the other end of the cylinder, and two pressure supply pipes and an exhaust pipe leading from the valve tace:ot means for putting the two ends of the cylinder into communication with each other when the piston is in one predetermined position and for putting the end of the cylinder containing the larger end of the piston into communication with the exhaust when the piston is in another predetermined position.
