APPLIGATIGN FII-.ED JAH. 14, 1909.

Application filed Januari! le, i909.
To all whom 'ir' concern:
Be it known that We, isi-lac lfrrin D. Karmann', citizens ot States of America, in the county ot' Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the Jfollowing is a specification, reference the accompanying H. Franzen and the United drawing.
T his invention relates to a rail joint, and
the objects of our invention are, irst, to prog nates a rail, haring -forced, at 8, and
vide positive and reliable means for connccting,l the confrontingl ends oi' two rails, to prevent said rails from becoming Yvertically and laterally displaced; second, to olivi-ate the necessity of using detachable splice hars and bolts and nuts for connectingthe splice liars together; third, to provide practically a continuous tread for rolling stock; an fourth, to provide a simple and durable rail jointv that can be easilyand quickly seinhled hy unskilled labor.
lVe attain the ahove objects by a structure that will' be presently described and then claimed.
ln the drawings, Figure l a side elevation of a rail joint constructed in accordance with our invention, Fig. is a plan of e. rail joint, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View of the san'ie, Figs. il and 5 are perspective views of the confronting ends of two rails, .and G and 7 are perspective views ot a locking;` pin and holt. l l
ln theacconipanying drawings, 1 desig- 'Y the head 2 thereoic cut away, as at 3, and the remaining web portion 4 provided with an openinjr 5. -The adjoining rail has the head 6 and the web 7 reinthe reinforcement is provided with a longitudinal slot i), corresponding in depth and length to the remaining web portion l of the rail l. The reinforced portion 8 forms a saddle, for straddling the cut-away portion 'of the rail l, and to accommodate a fastening means, the reinforcement S is provided with transverse alining openings 10, adapted to register with the opening of `the rail l. clearance for the hasse ianges of the rail l,
the base flanges il of the adjoining rail are cut away, asat 12. .After the adjoining has heen placed in engagement with the rail l, a' malleable locking pin or holt 18 is placed in'the openings l() and 5. The locking pin or bolt 13 is 'formed with downwardly and'outwardly bent portions, the end thereof flattened, as at 15, and cutaway as at 16, to provide a slot to receive a spike 17 employed for securing the rails to a tie or sleeper 18. Instead of slotting the flattened end 15, oi the bolt or pin', the opening 19 can be provided for the spike l?. it Will, of course, be understood that additional spikes are used for securing the base flanges of the rails to the tie or sleeper 18.
lt is thought that the manner of. assentoli-ng our rail joint is apparent without further description, and while in the drawings forming a part ot' this application there illustrated the preferred embodiment oour invention, We would have it understood that the details ot construction can he varied or changed as to the shape, proportion and manner oit assemblage Without departing fro'in Athe spiritl of the invention.
, Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, is 3*/ ln a'i'ail joint, the combina-tion with a tie, a rail thereon having its head cnt-away, a second rail formed with a slot placed astride the nrst rail, a locking bolt formed of' round iintl'ilreaded material havin. a rail abut'tn portion formed thereon by ending one` eng thereof downwardly and a biurcatedlower end disposed in parallelism to the upper end, said upper end` being 'engaging rails With sai ting against the outer rail, into the tie through the said bolt. -u
lntestiinony whereof we valii our signa'- tures in the presence ot two'witnesses.
