TTHNEIS JAIEB H. BEIBEBLING, 0F .TONESBOR0, INDIANA.
Specication of Letters Iatent.
CABIN@ FOR PNEUMATIG TIRES.
Application led March 3, 1909. Serial No. 481,125.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES H. Snmnnnmo,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jonesboro, in the lcounty of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Im roved Casin for Pneumatic Tires, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to wheels for bicycles, motor cycles and other vehicles having a casing or a. shoe containing an inner inflatable tube.
The object of the invention is to )rovide a new and improved casing or shoe or pneumatic tires, arranged to permit its conven ient and ready application on either a single. clench' or ouble clench style of wooden rim, the casing being provided for this purpose with separable abutting edges and sing e exterior locking ribs arranged at equal distances from the said edges, the ortion of the casing extendin from the ase of each rib to the correspon mg edge gradually diminishing in thickness and forming a pliable non-clenching, closing ange.
A practical embodiment of the invention is-'represented in the.accoinpanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in
which similar c 'aracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Fig the improvement, showing the casing applied to. a single clench wooden rim;.and I 4`ig.2 is a like'view of the same, illustrating the casing applied to a double clench wooden rlm.
Clencher casings or shoes, as heretofore constructed, were either of the single clench or the double clenchl style, to be used on correspondingly shaped sin le clench or double clench'rims, respective y. My improved clencher casing or shoe, presently to be dcscribed in detail, can be used on either a single or a double clench rim.
The casing or shoe for containing the 'inner iniiatable tube B. is adapted to be clenched to either a sin le clench rim C, as shown in Fig. 1, or to a ouble clench rim C', as illustrated in Fig. V2. For the purpose mentioned the casing A is rovided with abutting or meeting edges and single exterior locking (ibs A? are formed on the casing ntequnl distances from the edges A.
re 1 is a sectlonal perspective view of Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
The portion A3 of the casin extending from l the base of each rib A;2 tot e correspording.
1c mess ed e A', gradually diminishes in t an forms a pliable non-clenching, elosin flange. The casing A is also provided wit i an integral interior fia A4 ada ted to overlap the 'oint formed y the e ges A', one end of t e flap being integral with one side of the casing a distance from the ed e thereof, and the iap A* being of a. widt to extend well onto the o posite side of the casing A, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.
Now when the casing A is placed in position on the single clench rim C, as shown in Fig. 1, then the flanges A3 on being pressed outward by the inserted tube B cause firm engagement of the ribs A2 with the recesses Ct o the rim C, to securely hold the casing A in position on the rim C. When the casing A is applied to the double clench riln C', shown in Fig. 2, then the ribs A2r engage the recesses C3, and the flanges A"l step over the rib C4 to cause the edges A to firmly meet in the center of the rim C', thus causing a firm contact of the ribs A with the recesses C:l in the outer ridges 'of the Tim C'.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described, the same casing A casing for single clench or double clench rims, comprising a strip having edges adapted to abut, said strip being of greater width than the circumference of the tube to 4be contained therein, so that lthe edges will abut with their inner faces, one of'sald edges having an integral tongue for overlap inrr the inner face of the other edge, eac ori sald edges having o n its outer face an exterior locking rib, the ribs being arranged at equal distances from Vthe edges for the purpose set forth. p
Tn testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
